HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 Bautista is the type of player who would sign a s*** contract on a s***** team just to save face and ego. He won't be back here
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 It looks like the team is placing a lot of value on the 1st round pick. gezz - I wonder why.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 FFS just give him 2-3 years. Again, one year removed from near .400 wOBA and 40 HR. He's still potentially an elite bat. Then why aren't others lining up to lock him down? And don't tell me the 1st rounder...cause you're quoting .400wOBA and 40HR's...that's clearly worth the first rounder.
ChrisS Verified Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 His arrogance and chest puffing at ST really backfired big time. He should have signed an extension, it's probably going to cost him 50-60 mill.

He won't be back here Though the shittier the team, the less likely they are to sign him, right? Atlanta or Minnesota would have to lose damn near first overall pick in the draft, isn't that how it works?

Atlanta or Minnesota would have to lose damn near first overall pick in the draft, isn't that how it works? No it's not. The top 10 picks are protected. Those teams would surrender their next highest pick. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/10/explaining-the-qualifying-offer-system.html Rockies surrendered the 11th overall pick to sign Ian Desmond. They are dumb.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 NO, THEIR PICK IS f***ING PROTECTED! omg duh!

baseballsss Verified Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 Pick is clearly protected
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 The top 10 are protected, we would get their next pick. We don't get their pick. They forfeit it and we get a pick in the compensatory round.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 My phone just said the Jays are unwilling to give Jose a multi-year deal.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 His arrogance and chest puffing at ST really backfired big time. Since his ST rant.... - Got punched in the face and became a meme for life. - Had two separate stints on the DL. - Had his worst offensive and defensive seasons since his breakout. - Can't find a team willing to sign him as a free agent. Dude's body is is going to look like 2016 Sandoval's with all the humble pie he's been eating.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 They're just rubbing it in at this point. You'd think if you're going to blow the pick that you might as well get as many years as possible for it?
Ray Verified Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 How the mighty have fallen. I don't see any single fit for Bautista anywhere but here. It's between us and the O's, and the Indians basically.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 My phone just said the Jays are unwilling to give Jose a multi-year deal. I just saw that. How the mighty have fallen. I actually would like to see him back given what's transpired so far this off season. I'm surprised they won't go two yrs if this is true. Unless they just don't think he can really play the OF anymore at a serviceable level.

It all comes down to the blue jays having jumped the gun on the morales signing. JB at 17m is way more valuable than Morales at 11m. It was just a stupid signing and is really preventing this club from improving.

Shoot Justin Smoak into the ocean.

I'd imagine he'd agree to play 1st if it gets him the money he thinks he should get. If we could get him back for a couple years that rotation makes sense. Use a shift system to make up for his lack of range in LF/RF.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 Something is going on that we're not being made aware of. They won't give up the pick to sign him for one year, and they're apparently not willing to go multiple years. This is still a guy that projects at 2-3 wins, so something like 3/45 to retain a franchise icon seems fair. I'm thinking that he's either not keen on becoming a full-time 1B, or Mark Shapiro just doesn't like him. Possibly both.

I predict he comes back for 2/$32.
CHRIS Verified Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 I'm trying to think of someone who has lost as much potential earnings as Bautista, based off of timing. If he becomes a free agent with two season of breakout performance instead of one, he probably makes a lot more than 5/$65 million. If he becomes a free agent immediately after the bat flip season, instead of a year later, he probably has no trouble getting a big multi-year deal. One year of free agent timing on either side of his peak years is going to cost him a lot of money. That said, with the Booster Juice money rolling in, he's probably still doing okay.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 I wouldn't like a guy either if he tried to turn me into the franchise villain before my first season running the team. Bautista tried to use his clout to put Atkins and Shapiro in a spot but they responded by quietly and graciously waiting for the noose to tighten around Jose's neck.

There's no telling how he would do there fulltime, he might end up sucking there. I think he wants to play OF either way. He should be strictly a DH right now.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 Shapiro is a tough ass Jew playing hardball. Every penny counts. I love it. I predict he comes back for 2/$32. I bet Bautista has a 3/50 contract weeks ago if hadn't gone public a year ago and tried to rally fan support as a negotiation tactic. Shapiro doesn't seem like the type of guy to let that go. I'm not sure that I believe that the relationship is salvageable.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 He does? Isn't that exactly what's happening? He takes a lot of shots at Bautista. I guess a lot of people do though.
Ray Verified Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 Morales signing early is handicapping us. But I don't think anyone really expected the market to be this sour on either Edwin or Bautista, so the front office went and got Morales early just in case.

I'm comfortable assuming he can handle 1B until it proves to be a disaster.
