Driveof85 Verified Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 A poor defensive player can make up for his defense with his bat. Bautista is a damn good hitter, even in a down year. His defense alone isn't a good enough reason not to sign him because overall he's clearly a valuable player. We are all dicks out for Fowler but I'd like to see some sort of statistical argument that makes him that much more appealing on a 4 year deal than Bautista on a 2 or 3. Seems like the projections think they will be pretty similar, only Bautista probably has more injury risk and Fowler requires more commitment. Amen to that. Fowler is overrated. Pearce in LF, Bautista in RF, EE at 1B. The additions of Pearce and Morales are more than enough additions to the lineup, provided EE returns

bones10 Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 My biggest reason for wanting Bautista coming back is the fact that I have his jersey and I don't feel like buying another one. If he resigns I feel the rest of the career will be spent as a Bluejay
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 I'd still prefer Fowler at 4/68 than Bautista at 2/34. I buy into Fowler's skill set, and think he'll be a good player for 3-4 years barring serious injury, and his particular skill set fits this team perfectly. If thats all it would take I'd sign both in a heartbeat. Bautista at 17 Million for a 3 Win player is a steal. Have him and Pearce share time at 1B/LF and send Smoak away. Lineup with both is fantastic Fowler Donaldson Bautista Morales Tulowitzki Pearce Travis Martin Pillar
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Yeah the fact that they are even circling back to Bautista tells me that they don't see Fowler signing with them. Getting the younger, better defensive player seems like a no brainer, but if it's not an option, then you have to go with the best of what's left. Joey might be it. But yeah, seeing him in RF again would be painful. Enter...Angel Pagen ... Hello Guys!
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 The odds of EE returning are probably 1%. Give or take one percent and that may be true! Lol

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Bautista x2 > overrated Fowler
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 If the payroll is going to be around 160m, then they can't afford Fowler and Bautista, unless one or both take far less than they are expected to get. Might be one or the other.

Lineup with both is fantastic Fowler Donaldson Bautista Morales Tulowitzki Pearce Travis Martin Pillar There's no reason why the bluejays can't afford to sign both straight up, but Bautista loves Toronto. The jays could offer Bautista 17 per year for 2 years and pay 7 mil per for 2 years and pay the 20 mil deferred in three equal payments in years 3 4 and 5. They could get creative because I think Bautista wants back and as long as he's a free agent in 2 years and gets all his money being paid over 5 years it isn't that big of a deal. Last time I checked inflation was pretty low even with trumps pro growth policies.

I think it will be JB or Fowler, not both though, then they'll add a project reliever to save money.

eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 The disrespect for Jose is pretty hilarious. The guy is one year removed from a 40HR, .250/.377/.536 season. Walk rates are still through the roof. He had some injuries last year and still put up a very, very good offensive year. Shatkins will clearly bring him back as a primary DH if an offer is made. Yes, bringing back one of the greatest players in franchise history on a short-term deal when he is still very capable of putting up excellent numbers is absolutely nauseating. The hive is at it again.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 I think Davidi mentioned it, but might be speculation on his part. Isn't payroll at 133? 34 mil for both isn't that far off. Backload the contracts even a little 2.5 mil per in the first year for both and payroll is 162. Estrada and liriano come off the books next year and that's 27 mil.

Even if they brought JB back at DH I'm sure half of the board would still be up in arms. Bautista on a 2-3 year deal at a reasonable AAV would be a complete steal.

Sign him only now if the money and term is good for us and if he removes all no trade clauses !
closetjaysfan Verified Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 I think we can get him for cheap. He must no by now that the chances of getting the deal he wants are non-existent and that the list of teams willing to give up a pick are pathetically small.

bronson44 Verified Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 I assume business interests and endorsement opportunities here could also factor in, making it more attractive to take a lesser deal than others are offering. To what extent, I'm not sure.
