I'm starting to warm up to the idea of going after Chris Coghlan as a LF replacement for Saunders/Zeke. Real nice 2014 & 2015; s***** first half this year, but he turned it around after getting traded back to the Cubs (albeit in limited PAs). He's fine defensively in the OF and looks like a solid base runner.

Not sure what his market will be but I'd be okay giving him 2/14.

Interesting buy low option there. Didn't even realize he was a free agent. Would make sense.

Not even a bit surprising, but it's good to have him back. What a great trade that was. What was Atlanta thinking?

They obviously thought he was toast, pardon the pun.

He projects as replacement level and saw a big uptick in strikeouts and a drop in power last year. I wouldn't be interested in him on anything more than a minor league deal. We can and need to do better.

I was just thinking about the small possibility of the Jays spending big and possibly bumping up against the luxury tax limit (which I believe was $189M in 2016). Then it dawned on me that they are probably going to have to factor in the AAV of Upton's contract for luxury tax purposes even though they were given that bag of cash with which to pay him in 2017. Or am I off track here ? Anyway I guess it won't matter since they won't likely go above $170M actual spend. Although if some of that was only 1 year commitments........

There is no way in hell anyone offers Coghlan a guaranteed 2 year deal let alone at that AAV

The bluejays will not be getting into luxury tax territory. s***** thing about Rogers ownership is the company can't be run by emotion, like the Tigers and Ilitch the heir, spending money like crazy because he wants to win. They can't explain throwing extra money at players if they think profits won't be affected much by just going with average players. They need to sign a top FA though

I'd be down for Coghlan

Yeah me too. I like the idea of a guy who can move between the infield and the outfield and won't require anything like the commitment Ian Desmond will.

Isn't he terrible in the infield, like borderline unplayable at 2nd and 3rd?

With Donaldson you don't really need a backup 3rd baseman anyway.

The guy has been injured the past two seasons and played through that, you can't realistically expect that to continue. They really could use a bench guy other than Barney that could at least adequately play multiple positions and not completely suck at hitting. Coghlan being a Left-handed bat is another plus.

I'm certainly not against signing him at the market rate for a replacement level utility player. It's just that 2/14 is a ridiculous overpay.

He put up 5.7 fWAR between '14 and '15, so I think it's defensible to say that that he could revert to close to those levels, especially given the bounce back he had after he got traded back to the Cubs. 2/14 probably a little steep, but he definitely gets more than a minor league deal.

Don't let him play the infield though.

He was abysmal with the A's last year...there's no doubt, but with the Cubs over the past 3 years his average wRC+ has been 126, 114 and 113 with positive base running and defensive value - all of which added up to 6.7 WAR in 1,063 PA's. He's strict platoon guy, but I suspect he'd bring value to the team at 1/3 of the cost of Reddick (who's a similar profile).

He's also more versatile.

He's missed 19 games over 4 seasons... Thats about as good as you can get get so absolutely you can expect him to play 155 again.

Not saying better depth is a bad thing but Coghlan is terrible defensively so good chance he's under replacement level at 3rd.

From a versatility standpoint I think one of the best bets would be Pearce. He's probably more of a 1B at this point but played 2B, 3B, and the OF last season.

Why do people get so butthurt by players wanting a certain contract? Anyone can try to get any deal they want, no need to talk s*** about him because of that.

Same thing happened with Jose.. If any player came out and said they wanted "X" amount, it doesn't chance the way I feel about that player as a fan. Hell I want the players to get paid as much as possible, otherwise the Owners just pocked the money, they're the real crooks.

Fair point that it's just an ask and negotiation has to start somewhere, but I'm not butthurt at all - I was just making a joke. I'm of the opinion this team is better off not giving EE or Jose long term deals (say 4+ years for EE or anything beyond 2 years for Jose). Both are highly unlikely (although I could see Jose taking the QO), so for me it's time for a handshake, a sincere thank you for their service and you take your draft picks and $ and move on.
