baubau Verified Member Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 Moss isn't going to be qualified. He's not a first choice, but he'd be a very good backup plan. Backup plan? Who is in your first plan? He is an ideal candidate for me! Hard % Last year the Jays Hard% leaders were: 1. Jose 41.1% 2. Josh 40.4% 3. Eddie 39.0 % Moss' Hard% was 40.1%, and has been increasing over the past 3 years (33.1% - 2014 | 39.2% - 2015). GB% & FB% No Jay with a minimum of 70 PA had a GB% less than 30%. Moss' was 27.0%. Career 34.1% which would still put him as the 2nd lowest. Dude shouldn't hit into a lot of DPs. Most of his hits are Fly Balls too. He had 52.6% last year, no Jay had it that high. 1 Bad Month He did have a terrible September, had a bit of drop in Hard% (32.2%) but was still making mostly medium (45.8%) to hard contact. Most of his balls hit are naturally FB, but was a little high at 58.6%. Blaming the bad month to a .107 BABIP and not a decline in power or an injury concern. TLDR, a LHH who hits hard, and mostly hits fly balls likely equals 30+ HR playing in the ALE. Has position versatility (should mostly play DH to avoid any defensive liability) and was previously acquired by Cleveland too during Shapiro/Atkins days. That one bad month may have cost him some $$ but could end up saving the Jays a lot and a pick!
GD Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 Hard% isn't accurate and idk what the significance of the other points were
baubau Verified Member Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 Hard% isn't accurate and idk what the significance of the other points were He hits hard, doesn't into double plays. As for hard% i just used it to compare vs the other hitters on the team. where can I improve GD? I need some brushing up!
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 I would love to have Moss as a DH/1B type. Great lefty bat, can also make emergency LF/RF starts if needed. Signing Pearce and Moss would go a long way in solidifying the offense.
ILikeSoccerandBaseball09 Verified Member Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 No thanks to Moss His power was borderline elite this year but i can't stand the 30%K-Rate guys. He is basically Justin Smoak with 2015/2016 reversed. Yet Justin Smoak @ $4MM is WOAT signing while Moss will probably get double that (if not more) from someone. He does give some OF flexibility but I don't buy that he just magically became a plus OF defender this year after being average to absolutely terrible over the four years before that. Last two year splits. Moss: 990 PA, .226/.302/.443, 47 HR, .218 ISO, 29% K Rate, 98 wRC+, .318 wOBA Smoak: 669 pa, .222/.306/.430, 32 HR, .208 ISO, 30%K rate, 99 wRC+, .320 wOBA If someone wants to pay a ton for Moss re discovering elite power at 33 (after having his ISO go .306, .267, .204, .181 from 2012-2015) i really, really hope its not going to be the Jays.

Moss wasn't good defensively in the years he didn't play much in the OF, but whenever he's gotten a decent amount of time out there, he's been average to slightly plus. I don't know what was up with his second half last year, but there's not much difference in the peripherals aside from a brutal babip.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2016 Posted November 4, 2016 He was an OF last year and put up 3.3 WAR. He has more defensive value than guys like Adam Jones, Clutch and Span. Given that was his first ever year our in CF. That's not bad! I wonder if you put him in RF if he'd be a significant plus defensively and jump in WAR like Eaton did when he moved to RF...
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 4, 2016 Posted November 4, 2016 Desmond was worth 3.3 WAR and has been worth 18.5 WAR in the past 5 seasons. If you can find a "first choice decent OF/1B" that good I'd be all ears. I think you guys are underestimating him some. The Rangers will make a $17.2MM qualifying offer to outfielder Ian Desmond, general manager Jon Daniels told reporters today (Twitter link via MLB.com’s T.R. Sullivan). He’ll be the only Rangers free agent to receive one So... add a draft pick loss Still...

glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2016 Posted November 4, 2016 Improve the team without losing any picks. It's doable.
Maine Jays Verified Member Posted November 4, 2016 Posted November 4, 2016 Improve the team without losing any picks. It's doable. What about making a play for the younger Guriel brother? A) he's now 23, so he's no longer attached to international spending limits all he'll cost is cash, albeit a ton C) he was a SS, but athletic enough to be our Zobrist or everyday LF

If he has to move off the position Houston seems like it would be his first choice. Who knows though, this is all just speculation on my part. Finding a way to add a young bat to this lineup would be great.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2016 Posted November 4, 2016 (edited) It will be interesting to see what type of deal Greg Holland can land. He's definitely someone I'd love to have here on an incentive laden one year deal. Edited November 4, 2016 by Pendleton

I'd still be interested assuming the pick attachment drops his value some.

Fowler is likely better then him and maybe worth the pick more then Desmond.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2016 Posted November 4, 2016 Would be nice if we can retain Saunders and Bautista, and then we can get an athletic outfielder who is a switch hitter.

There is going to be a whole lot of interest, considering his track record. Someone may be willing to overpay (pay according to past performance before the elbow issue affected his 2015 numbers), but obviously I don't see the Jays being that one. Might be nice to get him for a 1 year with a vesting option for a 2nd year http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/11/greg-holland-set-for-showcase-within-the-next-week.html
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2016 Posted November 4, 2016 I think Saunders can come close to replicating what he was in the first half.
GoldBull Verified Member Posted November 4, 2016 Posted November 4, 2016 I'm starting to warm up to the idea of going after Chris Coghlan as a LF replacement for Saunders/Zeke. Real nice 2014 & 2015; s***** first half this year, but he turned it around after getting traded back to the Cubs (albeit in limited PAs). He's fine defensively in the OF and looks like a solid base runner. Not sure what his market will be but I'd be okay giving him 2/14.

Even if his bat doesn't completely rebound, he'd still provide a versatile lefty bench bat and the ability to field multiple positions. He's played six positions at the big league level (all three OF + 1B, 2B & 3B). 2/14 seems a tad steep but not out of the realm of possibility.
