Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2016 Posted October 21, 2016 Davidi saying 3/20 for Cecil. Omg $20m for Cecil???? That's not bad at all.
TorontonianJD Verified Member Posted October 21, 2016 Posted October 21, 2016 As in done deal? If so, that's not bad at all. Just that that's what industry sources think he'll get. Other sources say they wouldn't go more than 2 years.

Governator Community Moderator Posted October 21, 2016 Posted October 21, 2016 Davidi saying 3/20 for Cecil. Omg $20m for Cecil???? Considering Chapman & Jansen are about to drive the cost of reliable elite relievers through the roof, I'd say that would be a great deal. Casuals will start riots but I'd be on board.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2016 Posted October 21, 2016 The Casuals would freak out over 20M for Cecil. Would actually be pretty funny to watch
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2016 Posted October 21, 2016 Cecil is a 30 year old who was worth less than half a win last year. In order to justify the contract he would have to be worth 2.5 wins over the 3 years. That means that he has to be twice as good as last year at age 31. A lot of people here are not being objective. That is not a good contact.
TRM Verified Member Posted October 21, 2016 Posted October 21, 2016 That he's a showboat POS(over-rated, etc), he's f***ing awesome. Honestly, I think it stems from underlying systemic racism in the NHL (and society too, obviously).
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2016 Posted October 21, 2016 That contract is probably about right but unless prices for relievers goes up more than I think this year I'd probably pass.

Middle relief can easily be replaced, keeping rotation depth is hard
Dr Negative Verified Member Posted October 21, 2016 Posted October 21, 2016 There are always relievers available cheaply in the offseason. It's July when their value skyrockets because they are so valuable in the post-season.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2016 Posted October 21, 2016 Cecil at ~6.67 MM per season is a good deal IMO. 3 years to a reliever is scary but it's not exactly crippling with the direction reliever contracts are heading.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2016 Posted October 21, 2016 I wonder if Matt Holliday would consider signing here to DH and play some 1B. If he rebounds, he could replace a lot of what Edwin or Bautista would bring, but on a 1-year deal. Nah. Wrong piece for Gibbons hands.

Him and Bolsinger as the #6 and #7 to go along with the great 5 is a good start to having depth. We were so lucky this year to not have any pitching injuries. That will be hard to replicate next season.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2016 Posted October 21, 2016 Nah. Wrong piece for Gibbons hands. How exactly does one utilize Matt Holliday improperly? He has near identical splits against both LHP and RHP. Just don't ever let him play the outfield and limit his time on the field altogether and he can be a great piece as long as he remains relatively healthy, which has been a problem for him for a couple of years now.

That is not a good contact. Cecil was worth 3 wins the past 3 years. He missed time due to injury this year but was back looking very good the past couple months. I'm not sure you would look at just this year? Cecil will average more than a win a year the next 3

GET TULO ON THE LINE!! I think as a DH and in the slugging AL East he can revive his numbers
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2016 Posted October 21, 2016 Dexter Fowler RF + Matt Holiday DH would be great replacements for Joey Bats and Edwin.

Not the same $$ amounts, but a 3 (maybe 4) year deal with an opt out after the first year. If he rebounds and wants to test the FA market then he can do so after the first year. Only if he's back as a 1B/DH, I think the injuries really messed him up at the plate.

Yeah of course, I don't expect the Shapiro management to be paying players on past performances but for future performances. Whatever they come up with as "fair", taking into account projecting his future seasons based upon this season. Thats how it should be explained to Bautista, "This deal is based on what we think you can do based on the last couple of years, but if you bounce back next year then you can opt-out and we can renegotiate new deal/hit the open market". Worked for Cespedes
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2016 Posted October 21, 2016 Shapiro said he would not do a player option. I distinctly remember him saying that in the off-season. True but player option usually gets accepted when a player underperforms and thinks he'll get less in the market than what's been offered. Obviously that's stupid. Opt out is effectively a 1 year or a 3 year deal depending on the player

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2016 Posted October 21, 2016 Player options make sense in certain circumstances. Yes, Jason Heyward's looks terrible right now but if the Cubs could have gotten him without the player option they would have just done it anyway.

Yes, Jason Heyward's looks terrible right now but if the Cubs could have gotten him without the player option they would have just done it anyway. It turns out that the Cubs should have just walked away. The player option is a no-win deal for the team. If the player's value meets or exceeds his pay, he opts out, and if it doesn't, he stays. Guaranteed contracts already put all the risk on the team, and player opt outs eliminate a large amount of the potential reward.
