Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 Yes but now it is proven that the Jays can make a lot of $$ for Rogers. Rogers has a real incentive to do well for the Jays unlike before AA when Jays were just content Going forward Rogers media will want to sustain the attendance and television numbers. To do this they will spend $$. A model of success has been created. That is the important part I think this is the first time I've thanked one of your posts.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 I guess I'm an AA apologist because I pointed out that Escobar was traded because of the homophobic slur. Or I guess it's because I don't think the franchise is in as bad a shape as people make it out to be. Some people here have anger issues. We'll see what happens.
thatoneguy Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 Toronto will go back to not caring about this team after we miss the playoffs and then turn right back into the same team we were in 2013 and 2014. I really appreciated when you were not posting.
TraviscantplayD Verified Member Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 Love the hate in this thread from both sides. They're fortunate to even be in the hunt for a wild card. I mean look at that rotation. They over achieved for a good part of the season. But they came back to reality. Good news is we won't have to watch bautista and Saunders bumbling around in the outfield next year. Addition by subtraction
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 I guess I'm an AA apologist because I pointed out that Escobar was traded because of the homophobic slur. Or I guess it's because I don't think the franchise is in as bad a shape as people make it out to be. Some people here have anger issues. We'll see what happens. You pointed out why Escobar was traded when it had nothing to do with the point being made. That's what an apologist does. If you don't think the franchise is in bad shape, that's fine. I never said it was in bad shape, just stating reality. When you build for 1 or 2 years, that's all you're ever going to get. This is the final year of that window. Shapkins can extend the window by having a great off season but it won't be easy, especially with Boston and New York being so well run. Also, I don't know how I am angry. My post before this one was exactly what I've been saying since the Tulo/Price trades. You can choose to be optimistic and cover your eyes to what usually happens next when teams try to build this way. Luckily, Shapiro was hired when he was.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 Two games back, 20 games remaining. Anyone speaking in certainty about not making playoffs right now is getting way ahead of themselves.[/QUOT Agreed completely, of course there is still a decent chance -- the issue is the odds are a lot longer now. The last 3 series have changed the season. It really sucks. As well there may be underlying injury issues, or just plain fatigue setting in. The starting staff may be getting tired... I do not believe Sanchez, Happ, Estrado, or Stroman have ever pitched this much. The mid 30 players may be getting warn out and have undiclosed injuries, like Hilary Clinton has undisclosed health issue.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 Olerud... Worst poster of the year award? Thank you for considering me... I think because I am on topic, willing to see different views, and generally a nice person I am innelligible for the award. Again - This is the IMPLOSION thread. What on earth do you expect when you open the implosion thread??
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 Olerud... Worst poster of the year award? Nah I wouldn't say he's even close.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 Yes. Literally infinitely?
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 Nah I wouldn't say he's even close. I'd hate to think I am worse than Moogy... that guy was insane.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 Literally infinitely? Mathematically speaking yes, twenty is infinitely greater than zero. Are we done yet?
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 Yes 20% is infinitely greatly then zero. Something we all really wanted, a division title has gone from 70% or so to 20% in 9 games. It is a very sudden and drastic event. So let's just all get on the same page 1. The odds have gone from ~70% to 20% 2. The odds are not 0% 3. Deal with it how you must, this is the implosion thread... if you have sad, negative or angry thoughts this may be the place to put them.

They're in a playoff spot, two games up.

We have to remember that the last calendar year is the first time since Rogers bought the team that they have been real contenders. If Rogers had any doubts about the fan support for a winning team, those should be eviscerated by now. They see how the fans pack the place and set tv ratings records when the Jays are good. Maybe they'll have more incentive to field a good team.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 Executives are under real pressure to sustain improved numbers whether financial or other metrics In Canada hockey is a mature market. While there is growth it is limited. The growth in the baseball numbers in the last two years has been unprecedented for Rogers. There is no going back. When you have a million plus watching every night you can't go back to 500k. Jobs are at stake. Shapiro is smart as well. Whatever happens this year future is bright for the Jays. As for MLB 8 playoffs spots are coming. You can book that too. With the way attendance has declined they will be jumping on that bandwagon soon enough

If the Jays lose all three of EE, Bautista, & Saunders and don't bring in another big bat (e.g. Joey Votto), then I could see a bunch of casual's jumping off the bandwagon and complaining.

More space for the real fans to stretch out at the games and not have to deal with questions like "the batter didn't swing at the pitch, how can that be a strike?" - Happened yesterday at the game, I wanted to strangle a hoe.

I think EE is as good as gone. Not signing Bautista seems like a great decision now I think that Shapiro will be willing to offer qualifying to all three. 1 year risk is not top much. Plus he gets to fill out the payroll Right now no one will give up a pick for Bautista or pay him. His ppl will advise him to accept qualifier
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 Would any team surrender a pick right now for Bautista. Forget the money,

admin Site Manager Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 What's Jose even worth anymore? Best case scenario 3.5WAR next year as DH? He'll be turning 38 next year. 8WAR over the next years is probably realistic.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 Delete your account. Name a team that needs a right fielder who is a huge defensive liability who can't really throw ( blows his arm every time he tries) Who is aging and showing huge signs of declining power.

The fans will improve, I'm guessing most of the people saying those things were people who were young when the Jays won the world series and faced 20+ years of mediocrity so the Jays and Baseball wasn't relevant during that span. I'd say give it a couple of more years of contention and the general public will understand baseball more

Happened like 10 times yesterday. I think people are really starting to see the huge positives in implosion, here are just 3 1. Gibbons and coaches FIRED! 2. Casuals gone. Stubub prices go down 75%. 3. Draft pick number 20 instead of 26 (could make a big difference if Shapiro/Atkins spot the next Trout/Seager and can grab him before smart orgs like Sox/Dodgers get on the board).
puphood Verified Member Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 Boston 11 tough games coming up and Baltimore about the same. Jays playing in big parks after the Rays could be a problem........

I'd say give it a couple of more years of contention and the general public will understand baseball more We went through this already with 5 straight years of sellouts. I'd say about 1% of these become diehard baseball fans at the most. Maybe 3 to 5 percent learn what Buck and Tabby teach them about baseball and are diehard Jays fans. The rest never returned.

Implosion could eliminate the casuals, however once we rebuild they will be back in 2027... dumber than ever because they would not have had the chance to learn. So in your view, we must do everything possible to stop Implosion, for the sake of preventing the casuals from leaving, then coming back even dumber in 2027.
