Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 Better to slump now than at the end of September/early October. This is baseball - there are ups and downs throughout a season.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 1985 playoff implosion too. But yes 1987's losing their last 7 (after a 7 game winning streak), including 4 one run games against the only team that could catch you...that was a bad one. In my mind that Kirk Gibson HR in the 9th off of Henke in the game with 7 left was almost as big as 1 legged Kirk Gibson. Forgotten now but any loss at that point would have changed the outcome of the season. Henke also blew a Friday night game in Boston last week of the season in 1990... Crazy year... Jays were 6.5 back at about this time, went nuts for a couple of weeks to retake the lead, but couldn't close it out. http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/BOS/BOS199009280.shtml

THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 Better to slump now than at the end of September/early October. This is baseball - there are ups and downs throughout a season. This is true. We began our slump in the last week of the regular season last year and it carried into the playoffs. Let's hope they have a team meeting today and find the root of their collaborative struggles. They really need to get on the same page and define roles as far as their approach goes.

What if the root is that the team is just not good enough? Bautista has def taken a step back, EE has come down to Earth, Travis's defense is shoddy, Grilli and Benoit are not prime relievers, Happ and Estrada are becoming what they have always been, Saunders is coming back to what he has always been, gone are the days of Tulo's power What if the answer is simply They aren't good enough,
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 Even if we make the playoffs, this roster with our lackluster offense has too many holes. We are 4th in the AL in runs scored and 7th in all of baseball.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 We are 4th in the AL in runs scored and 7th in all of baseball. We got spoiled in 2015. Funny thing is I think on paper this offense is better, but it hasn't executed as well. 4th in the AL is great - but when competing with mashers having a huge offensive season like the BoSox, if the rotation and/or pen falters, we are toast.
admin Site Manager Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 I think we'll be okay, but a terrible Yankees and Rays team, gotta win some of those games.

Yeah I don't think this slump will continue much longer but those 6 games put them in a dogfight for the WC spots when they were a decent bet to win the division. Pretty frustrating. It's good to get an off day and then head home. The Dome is going to be LIT for this Sox series. Winning 2 of 3 would be a good reset and would tie things up heading in to the final 3 weeks.

We are slumping. There is a good chance we break out of this. Let's hope by some miracle we sweep the Red Sox

I don't really trust our pen our Gibby so that's why I'm pesimistic. If our offense is firing on all cylinders it relives a lot of pressure on the rest of the team to be perfect.

TRM Verified Member Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 1-5 in September. Red Sox could take over first place tonight. Orioles a game back and the Yankees right in the mix as well. Finishing 4th in the Division is a very real possibility. I will make a significant wager against this.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 A true implosion here would be very hard to sallow. Anything less than an a division series is going to be very tough to take. Especially after the expectations. Imagine just a few years back how excited we would have been at the prospect of being 1 game back.
FrozenRopes Verified Member Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 Take the ball the other way and play a little smaller ball. You cant solo homer into the kead when you are down by 3. This team has to get back to basics.

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 Jonn how old are you?? Not a lot of people likely remember implosion 1987 or the lesser known implosion 1990. Take a look at the last week of those seasons. Positive: As implosions go this is rather humane. Get it done first week of September instead of last... the team will fall 5 games out and in 2036 no one will even know an implosion happened. It will be over quick. Monday morning it is done Spanky (Monday morning) - 4 games back of the division, but only 2 back of the wild card, all is not lost -- KEEP IN MIND LADS -- Os and Sox play each other 7 times in the next 11 days. One of them has to lose.. no?? We just take care of our business and we'll be close to either the wild card or division lead in a week. Then there's those 3 in Boston last weekend. They will mean something. We gain 2 games in the next two weeks... then take care of business in Boston. That's all it takes. I like Spanky. I'm not making fun of him. I hope he posts something like this just to get you guys going.... Wow, you're pathetic

BTS Community Moderator Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 The team had one of the best offenses of the last couple decades last season, and they did it with patient power hitters looking to put the ball in the air to their pull side. It's amazing that people who watched this think that the key to unlocking the offense is to slap more balls the other way.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 What the team needs is a nice day off. We'll sweep Boston guys its ok. I think we all need a day off away from this team
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 We've got outstanding pitching matchups against Boston and the series is at home where we have a 40-28 record (Boston is 37-31 on the road). Estrada vs. Porcello Happ vs. Rodriguez Sanchez vs. Buchholz

HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 No pitchers we haven't seen before. Thank god Porcello is Porcello, probably CY winner Rodriguez had the no hitter into the 9th last time out Bucholz' last 3 starts went 6 innings, no more than 1 ER I think I'll prefer nobodies :/

CBlake Verified Member Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 Well this is not 1987, lots of baseball left to play.
FrozenRopes Verified Member Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 And what? bunt more? If necessary. Like i said, take the ball the other way, hit and run etc. Get away from homerville.
youngtea Verified Member Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 If most of our games aren't away I would say we are likely to win the division. This is going to be tough and hopefully they figure it out by the next game otherwise it's likely we might even miss out on the wild card.
