Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 Kratz might be better than Thole, or he might not be, but it's a zero risk move either way. Josh Donaldson has experience catching too. Ok, but I'd rather stick Pete the hot dog vendor back there before putting our MVP behind the plate to get his thumb jammed. They would totally disregard that experience and throw in someone less valuable if that emergency situation ever occurred.
gbill2004 Verified Member Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 There's no world in which JD becomes a backup catcher. He's the Martin got ejected and the backup just keeled over, last ditch option. Exactly. There's a chance.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 I keep checking our system for possible back up catchers and Lavarnway never gets a mention. On further inspection, I now know why. His career minor league numbers .285 and .375 obp look pretty good but his major league numbers .198 and .258 are Tholeesk and I don't know anything about his defense. I'm a big Derrick Chung fan. He's pretty old for a minor leaguer and he'll never hit enough for the Majors but I've loved watching him play whenever I've seen him. Nice and quiet receiving, good framing, strong throwing arm. I would love to see him get a cop of coffee at some point just so he can show off his defense but that seems very unlikely now. Future outcome is probably something like bullpen catcher.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 Does Pete have a scouting report? I think Todd had him in his top 80.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 Barney is that guy. JD after him. I don't even think JD would be it then, hes too valuable to risk him going behind the plate at all.
Governator Community Moderator Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 He can throw a knuckleball, maybe he could just replace RA Dickey and be a 3rd back up catcher heh. Two birds, one stone. http://sports.cbsimg.net/images/visual/whatshot/KratzKnuckleball042716.gif

Governator Community Moderator Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 (edited) Barney is that guy. JD after him. Depends on the scenario. If it's the last game of the year and the season is on the line vs the Sox, I'm pretty sure JD would put on the gear. The guy with the most experience. Edited July 28, 2016 by Governator
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 That was Ricky Romero. We took Russ immediately before Cole Hamels and Nick Swisher lol. Ugh. Also f*** didn't we draft Deck McGuire over Chris Sale? That stings too!!!

Virgil_Hiltz Verified Member Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 They both project to be around 60 wRC+ guys ROS. It's a minor league deal and has some experience catching Dickey so why not? with how Dickeys been pitching he won't have to catch any pitches! Question....would the jays be better overall if there was no catcher with RAD pitching and go with 4 outfielders?
CHRIS Verified Member Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 Maybe he can catch his own knucleball? R.A. Dickey and Thole all wrapped into one. The only two I can think of that *might* possibly be able to do that is Bugs Bunny and Curt Hennig.
CHRIS Verified Member Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 Oh damn, Curt Hennig is totally dead. So I guess just Bugs.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 Oh damn, Curt Hennig is totally dead. So many of them are dead.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 Kratz used to be solid but he's too old now.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 It's a shame we missed out on that 75m in surplus value Kratz was pegged at.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted July 29, 2016 Posted July 29, 2016 What happened to the smart kid (not being sarcastic) who said Kratz is worth 85 mil? (Not so smart). Never see him post anymore, did he wise up and go work for a team???

GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2016 Posted July 29, 2016 Yes. JFaS had a psychotic break and last I heard tried to stick up a 7/11 with a Roberto Alomar bobblehead.
