Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 We need a starter, Sanchez will go to the pen eventually and Hutch won't cut it. Yes we do have a big hole we need to address which is the bullpen, we need a reliever. Daaaa - wouldn't Sanchez in the pen fill that hole?
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 Daaaa - wouldn't Sanchez in the pen fill that hole? Sanchez is not enough You need more. Last year we had Sanchez and Lowe. Even if Sanchez goes back you still need Lowe's replacement Also we had a Cecil on top of his game. Unless he returns to form you need a replacement for Cecil

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 Daaaa - wouldn't Sanchez in the pen fill that hole? So we're going to take our best starter out of the rotation to shore up the pen? Yeah, cause that makes a lot of sense.

THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 (edited) Just try and pick up guys like Trevor May. Having a rough year by BABIP and HRs but the K/9 and BB/9 are great. A change of scenery could Grilli him. Edited July 11, 2016 by THANOS
polar bear Verified Member Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 Wonder if Matt Joyce could be a low cost target. He's an upgrade over Smoak. Just about anyone is an upgrade on Smoak.

Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 Innings limit, man. We don't want to be like the Mets. There isn't an innings limit though. It's more of a pitch total/how does his pitches look/how does he feel....limit
Governator Community Moderator Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 Colabello is coming back soon, he's free. Just about anyone is an upgrade probably doesn't include non-PED Colabello.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 Just about anyone is an upgrade probably doesn't include non-PED Colabello. I prefer Colabello to Montero
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 Cola should have his shot in Buffalo to make a run.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 Steve Pearce makes the most sense to go after.
King Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 Peter Gammons @pgammo 3h3 hours ago The high cost of bullpen help:Miami gave Chris Paddack for Fernando Rodney. The price tag on Jeremy Jeffress was Paddack, 2 more prospects SRF ++
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 Innings limit, man. We don't want to be like the Mets. That's pseudo-science ********. If being like the Mets means making it to the World Series, count me in.

Governator Community Moderator Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 Joba was released, free agent and wants to be on an mlb roster. Don't think he's upgrading anyone for us tho, that walk rate is yuck.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 So we're going to take our best starter out of the rotation to shore up the pen? Yeah, cause that makes a lot of sense. Read the rest of the posts to get the context man. The guys suggests Sanchez is going to the pen - then tells us they need to address the big hole in the bullpen. I'm not advocating Sanchez to the pen. His flat arm mechanics mean there's a high chance his arm blows out at some point. I'm not convinced restricting innings is going to change that. This is a good for broke year - so go for it.

Not saying he is a Grilli, but when we got Grilli is BB rate and numbers splits vs LHH (like Vmart was on Sat) were AWFUL.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 Grilli was also working his way back from injury. Joba just sucks. Soooooooo...you're saying you wanna take a flyer on him?
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2016 Posted July 12, 2016 Soooooooo...you're saying you wanna take a flyer on him? I'd rather take a chance on Jepsen if we're going to go that route. If we're willing to make a minor trade, however, I think that Andrew Bailey of the Phillies, Carlos Villanueva of the Padres, and J.C. Ramirez of the Angels merit consideration.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 How much would Votto cost? I think our trade targets have to be receiving players owed lots of money where we take on most of the contract (salary dump type of trade) to provide salary relief for a team looking to rebuild or retool, given our lack of prospects that we have to trade. That's why I think someone like Upton could be a possible option too, 8 under .500 I think in the NL West they might as well tank a bit and retool for next season

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 Do we really want to pay Joey Votto 25million a year for the next 7 seasons? That's the rub. There's already Martin, there's already Tulo. That might all the front office is willing to carry in terms of big contracts to players with declining skills and it's certainly not unreasonable of them to feel that way.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 Do we really want to pay Joey Votto 25million a year for the next 7 seasons? Love Votto but absolutely not. Man, the Cards were smart to let Pujols walk.
