BigRed Verified Member Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 I'm not too worried, we were .500 with around 1/4 of the season left and we took it to the ALCS. We have a strong starting foundation. We need one or two BP pieces and the offence to wake up. Maybe Odor knocked the offence back into Bautista. Tulo's starting to heat up and both Pillar and Saunders are doing well. Time for the middle 4-5 to pick up the slack Hoping or thinking that the Jays can play at nearly a .700 clip (.694 over the last 62 I think) again over the last 62 games like they did last year is silly though, especially with the Os and Red Sox looking a lot better this year. In all liklihood that's not going to happen - the Jays managed something special last year, and to think they can just flip a switch again is asking for disappointment, They aren't likely to get the morale boost at the deadline like they got last year by adding Price, Tulo, Revere, etc.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 Yea Midland. i paid attention during Friday Night Lights.
FrozenRopes Verified Member Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 Things I learned today: - JoeyBats can take a punch - Odor can throw a punch - Matt Bush will be an idol in Texas - Baseball players cannot fight - Chavez has balls - Jays needed this
TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 When did this happen...or was it during Donaldson's rush?
West Texas Forever Old-Timey Member Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 i paid attention during Friday Night Lights. Hah yeah I can see that.
West Texas Forever Old-Timey Member Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 I am not sure if Donaldson got hit or not, its tough to say.
BigRed Verified Member Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 he's clearly trying to hit him with the throw..... Bats is breaking up the double play. I've seen a slide like that a million times with no punches thrown. if JB was trying to hurt Odor, believe me Odor would be limping badly right now what are you guys watching, lol. Bautista was like halfway to the grass from the bag after that ridiculously late slide. He didn't even attempt to stay on the bag, which is a clear violation of the new takeout slide rules. If he almost got hit in the head it's because he was going down as he was nearly at the bag, he should have been well into his slide by that point. A "bona fide slide" for purposes of Rule 6.01 occurs when the runner: (1) begins his slide (i.e., makes contact with the ground) before reaching the base; (2) is able and attempts to reach the base with his hand or foot; (3) is able and attempts to remain on the base (except home plate) after completion of the slide; and (4) slides within reach of the base without changing his pathway for the purpose of initiating contact with a fielder. Bautista was like 4-6 feet past the base after that slide. Made no attempt to stay on the bag. Don't think middle-infielders haven't been told by coaches and umpires about the changes to the takeout slide rules in the offseason. So as a 2nd baaseman you're told guys have to make an attempt to stay on the bag when sliding into second, and a guy slides through you like a bullet halfway to the grass you aren't going to be upset. Not to mention Bautista is the one who started walking to Odor. He could have just walked to the dugout.

FrozenRopes Verified Member Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 Lots of people to blame, but Odor took it too far. The slide, bad. The shove, bad. The punch (while solid), unacceptable.

BigRed Verified Member Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 yes, the slide was late, just like a million others i've seen with no punches thrown and how many of those times did the runner start walking towards the person they just took out with a late slide with thier chest puffed out? This isn't the first time a punch was thrown in a baseball scuffle, just because he landed flush doesn't make it any worse than all the scuffles where baseball players whiff on 4 punches before getting held down.

Bautista had a late aggressive slide into the bag. No question about it. If Odor didn't pounce the way he did he'd be hurt
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 baseball tonight just talked about the incident, Mendoza feels it was obviously intentional by Bush.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 That was a way late slide. No excuse to start a brawl. .. but I understand why Odor wanted to get a piece of Bautista, and i get why Bautista was pissed at getting throw at and wanted to send the only mesage he could. But That's exactly the kind of slide the rule is trying to prevent. Chavez did the right thing. Hit him square in the thigh. So Chavez likely gets suspended ... Odor for sure and should be 5 games+. Will be lucky if Donaldson and Pillar don't get something light..maybe 1 game. Gibby will get suspended for coming back on the field after having been ejected...maybe Hale.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 yes, the slide was late, just like a million others i've seen with no punches thrown the game is changing as much as you hate to see it. They should have changed this rule 10 years ago (well 20 but at least when the NCAA did). Illegal slides at second are not acceptable. In this case it was intentional. While Odor's reaction was probably a reflection of who he is...this scenario is probably going to start a fight 95% of the time.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 Ignore the creepy giggling.. Odor missed when he had to swing at a moving target lol
West Texas Forever Old-Timey Member Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 Ignore the creepy giggling.. Still looks like he just missed his nose. Also does anyone think about this situation. I know a lot of people don't like Jose but I bet he has some good friends on other teams that are pitchers that might face smelly Odor soon this year, think they throw one at him for Jose?

This isn't the first time a punch was thrown in a baseball scuffle, just because he landed flush doesn't make it any worse than all the scuffles where baseball players whiff on 4 punches before getting held down. chesting up is what happens in most baseball arguments. two guys chest up and yell at each other, there is a few "why Iouttas" and at that point the whole thing could have been settled with a few "yo momma jokes" and it would have been over. It wasn't a donnybrook until Odor threw the punch which Jose was clearly too naive to see coming. Jose got cold cocked and payed the priced for not being ready for what might happened. Jose is just lucky that Beltre held him and cuddled so that no one else go to take pot shots at Jose who clearly CAN'T even protect himself.

West Texas Forever Old-Timey Member Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 I could see Ervin Santana getting a call from Jose to hit him next time the Twins face the Rangers.
BigRed Verified Member Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 I could see Ervin Santana getting a call from Jose to hit him next time the Twins face the Rangers. That's not going to happen, lol. Not unless Jose wires him a couple hundred g's. No player on another team is going to risk a suspension because Jose decided to try and take Odor out, and then walked at him and got clipped.

AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 Slide was dirty and could have seriously injured Odor. Glad Odor cracked Jose in the jaw. Wish more players would reciprocate after dirty slides like that. I know the homers won't agree, but when Devon Travis breaks his leg, after a slide like that, you'll all change your tunes.

I don't see a lot of people defending the slide. Why are you inventing that narrative? I see more people having an issue with Odor starting a brawl and throwing punches, which is not excuseable, although understandable.

I don't know why so many act like you have to be ok with one or the other. The slide was dirty and the retaliation for it was, as well. Most of us aren't condoning either.

Had that not happened, and the Rangers not been butthurt by a batflip, which didn't have the potential to hurt anyone or anything except people feelings, the Jose would not have felt the need to retaliate. Not defending the slide by Bautista either, because he could have chose not to do anything and be the bigger man, just that the Rangers got the ball rolling with the HBP in retaliation for hurt feelings.

The slide was illegal and has been for the duration of about 40 big league games. But that was NOT a dirty slide, he never raised his feet he just didn't stay on the bag. Last year no-one would have batted an eyelid at the slide. Call me a homer if you wish but the Bautista haters are having a ball today and bizarrely some folk are making out that Odor was justified in his actions.

Would it have been acceptable for Bautista to charge the mound and try to take Bush's head off with a punch after the Hbp? Ignore the fact that Jose wouldn't have done it, but would that have been okay by you?
