Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2016 Posted April 23, 2016 Zaun made a pretty good point that the substance has a fairly short shelf life in the body, so the fact that Cola showed up to ST with it in his system suggests he either took something without knowing (stupid) or got something else that was "tainted" (s***** break). I mean, it's always possible that Cola just took it and come what may, but the other possibilities make it tough to just call him a cheat at this point. And this is just me, but even if he did cheat (and yeah, cheating sucks), it's pretty understandable. The big leagues are pretty f***in' cutthroat if you're not a core guy. I wouldn't want to find a real job if I grew up dreaming about baseball. It's one thing for A-Rod and Braun to do it (scummy), but a guy who may as well be living paycheck-to-paycheck... a bit more understandable. Give me a f***ing break. He was probably taking it all last season too. Do we even know when the test was administered? Probably takes a month or so to get results back. He could have been tested during the offseason.

Probably takes a month or so to get results back. He could have been tested during the offseason. I'm not discounting that either. But the guy didn't get caught last year, so at this point there's no proof that there's some unbroken line of cheating. Certainly not enough proof for local sportscasters to come to any conclusions yet. I wonder what Smoak thinks of this. Sure, Colabello may have some sympathetic reasons, but Smoak's the guy who lost playing time because of it (assuming Cola was using last year).
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2016 Posted April 23, 2016 It's like you guys are f***ing with me. It was always 50 It used to be 50>100>life but it was changed in the last bargaining agreement to 80>162>life

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2016 Posted April 23, 2016 Caller into Ben Ennis on Jays Talk asked if the team could wear a patch for Cola while he is gone and maybe put a picture in the clubhouse of him. A shrine to Cola? More than half this board realizes his .411 BABIP last year was unsustainable and had him destined likely to be DFA'ed. But some fans want the team to wear a patch for a guy suspended for PEDs? I don't want to pass judgement and wont, but his statement sounded a lot like most players when they are busted. We'll see. Even without the PEDs its time to say to goodbye to what was a great story and a seemingly very decent fellow in Cola.

The guy took a banned steroid which wasn't just slipped in to his drink less than a week before reporting. Even if he could claim he only used it during the offseason for working out, it's irrelevant. The guy was caught cheating right after a breakout year, it doesn't take much to put two & two together even if you take his BABIP in to full consideration.

He would be nice to have right now, minus his current injury of course.

He was undervalued by most of us when you look at current situation. Having said that the mgm has made it much worse then it should be by using f***ing Zeke as the 4th OF.
BigRed Verified Member Posted April 23, 2016 Posted April 23, 2016 Nope In January 2004, Major League Baseball announced a new drug policy which included random, offseason testing and 10-day suspensions for first-time offenders, 30-days for second-time offenders, 60-days for third-time offenders, and one year for fourth-time offenders, all without pay, in an effort to curtail performance-enhancing drug use (PED) in professional baseball. This policy strengthened baseball's pre-existing ban on controlled substances, including steroids, which has been in effect since 1991.[1] The policy was to be reviewed in 2008, but under pressure from the U.S. Congress, on November 15, 2005, players and owners agreed to tougher penalties; a 50-game suspension for a first offense, a 100-game suspension for a second, and a lifetime ban for a third. In December 2009, Sports Illustrated named baseball's steroid scandal of performance-enhancing drugs as the number one sports story of the decade of the 2000s.[2] The current penalties, adopted on March 28, 2014, are 80 games for a first offense, 162 games for a second offense, and a lifetime ban for a third. Players are also prohibited from participating in that year's post-season regardless of when their suspension is completed.[3] It was 50, from after the 2005 season (November) until the start of the 2014 season (March).
BigRed Verified Member Posted April 23, 2016 Posted April 23, 2016 And unless he wins an appeal, he's ineligible for the playoffs (even though his suspension is finished in July -- 1st and 2nd time offenders are playoff ineligible unless the suspension is reduced on appeal), so good chance he gets DFAed when he's back, or traded to a non-contender if the Jays are in the playoff picture.

And if it is the case that everyone is tested at the start of spring training, that just shows how Cola is even more stupid.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2016 Posted April 23, 2016 I hope everyone boos Colabello when he returns... Isn't it hip to boo all the steroid users like Arod and Braun? Bunch of hypocrites
flafson Verified Member Posted April 23, 2016 Posted April 23, 2016 That's concerning to be honest, if Colabello is using, it's not a far fetch that other Jays also use.

Theres probably like at least 30 MLB players right now using PEDs. Not naive to think other players on the Blue Jays use them but its likely the fringe guys that take them not the stars.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2016 Posted April 23, 2016 I think some PEDS should be legal tbh. At least the ones that really help with recovery. You have these guys playing 162 games in 184 days or whatever it is and they already take stuff like Cortisone. Drugs that help with recovery would allow the best players to stay on the field and play more.

I'm not saying to remove the ban on all PEDs just select ones that are recovery based. Guys will take them whether they are legal or not.
