General 2016 Blue Jays discussion thread

6-2 so far in the 12-game Yanks-Sox gauntlet. I was really worried about this stretch. I was pretty unconvinced after the rickety 3/4 from in Minnesota, but I am so happy the team has upped its game.

 

After the Sox series the schedule isn't too bad. June has a ton of road games but we don't run in to any elite teams and we play 9 national league games against the D-Backs, Phillies and Rockies.

 

Then in July we finish the first half of the season with 11 straight home games against AL Central teams before the break.

u could kind of see the bats coming around. with the return of travis and the way we handled kimbrel + chapman being the best signs.

Actually tied for 5th and they were 2nd in month of April so they are beginning to dig themselves out of the hole.

The 'role players' on our lineup actually played decent/good offensivelly. Smoak, Saunders, Carrera, Barney all surpassed my expectations. Our stars players, JoeBats, Edwin, Tulo and Martin have yet to perform to their norms.

 

I was really impressed by the at-bats of Travis, Pillar and Barney against Betances last night.

The 'role players' on our lineup actually played decent/good offensivelly. Smoak, Saunders, Carrera, Barney all surpassed my expectations. Our stars players, JoeBats, Edwin, Tulo and Martin have yet to perform to their norms.

it does wonders when you have guys who realize that you can't swing for the fences all the time.

Can't complain too much about the supporting cast that was assembled by the FO. Storen is not great but no worse or more expensive than Revere and Biagini, Floyd, Chavez have all solidified the bullpen much like Happ and Estrada have solidified the rotation. Resigning Barney, Saunders and Smoak has really looked and shrewd. Even the much maligned decision to protect Zeke from waivers has looked prescient. The under-peformance of the core has pretty much been the whole issue with the team.

Agreed. He almost hit that one out. He's actually been decent last couple of games.

We need Edwin to hit more than we need Martin to get hot, given that's all he does. It's funny how many RBI's he has given he really hasn't hit well with RISP yet 2016. They both seem to be having better ABS now overall. Martin's outs are even getting louder. Edwin is non stop being pitched away and he is chasing more than the norm. I don't know if it's frustration or decline. When he is locked in, he has a a great eye. I just wish he moved up on the plate a bit and had more success driving the ball to RCF. The line up has been getting some key hits to RF lately(off Chapman, Betances, Kimbrell) but it's not often Edwin is a part of that.

Yep. If the stars were all playing like stars, the Jays would be in a much better spot right now. Maybe that will happen as the season goes on, but that's the main reason for the slow start.

There's nothing wrong process-wise with the Storen trade but it's not quite fair to compare him to Revere's results since another option was just to non-tender Revere or trade him for someone making the minimum. You need to compare Storen to the non-tender option as well and by doing that, it looks worse.

 

Fair enough. With the benefit of hindsight, it would have been more beneficial to just turf the Revere contract than make the trade since neither player is worth their salary atm. It's not entirely fair to do that but you're right that's it's not entirely fair to give the front office credit for "winning" the trade either. To trutly win the trade, Revere would have to perform up to his salary because the Revere money could have been recovered otherwise.

Dickey can help a lot of teams. Especially in the NL where (I assume here) he could be a lot like the Dickey of old. What could we get for him? No lengthy contract, about $11M left for the year, and we have Hutch looking good in AAA. No more "hole" Thole in the batting order.

Second, should we wait the year out, hope Dickey does his thing and ends up with good numbers, offer him a QO, and hope that we get a pick out of it?

I think Hutch would definitely match Dickey pretty close while opening up a back up catcher spot. I don't know what teams would honestly want him and his baggage though (Thole + Heart Attacks).

 

If this team gives RA Dickey a $16M qualifying offer I'm throwing in the towel.

Why trade Dickey? Our depth isn't that great. We've basically got one big league starter in AAA and that guy is already slated to return to the rotation once Sanchez heads to the bullpen.

 

If anything I say we extend Dickey right now. 1 year, 8 mil with an option for 8 mil again and a 1 mil buyout. He's been a good pitcher for us.
