Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 You don't believe that Gibbons chose his closer and leadoff hitter, or that he requested Carrera and Tepera for his bench? I'm not sure on any of those things. You KNOW Shapiro is pulling the strings though.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 Hopefully it's just semantics but Smoak should not be considered a bench piece. Cola should be, just by virtue of being on the lean end of the 1B platoon. Hopefully the semantics aren't what will be practiced. Cola will get most of the playing time at 1B, at least until he bombs enough to have Gibby lose faith in him (if that happens). As we've seen with some of the decisions here, Gibbons has a lot of say in the roster decisions, and obviously as manager he will set the lineup. Cola was the guy he trusted in the playoffs last year, and he'll do the same this year in all likelyhood. Sucks for Smoak but no way around it.
BTS Community Moderator Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 I'm not sure on any of those things. You KNOW Shapiro is pulling the strings though. It would be absolutely shocking if the FO told Gibby that Pillar should lead off and Osuna should close. The only reasonable assumption is that Gibbons decided these. It would be mildly surprising if Gibbons requested Venditte and Ceciliani and had Tepera and Carrera forced on him. I don't think the FO would cross their manager by forcing him to carry inferior players to the ones he wanted. I do think that that FO should have overruled his preference for Tepera and Carrera.
Cyborg Verified Member Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 Now you're stretching a bit. Carrera is very bad.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 I don't think Shapiro is really involved in deciding who makes the team especially the 4th OF/last man in the pen. He might sign off on it but its Atkins who would be most involved with Gibby.

I believe Storen has a bonus clause in his contract with saves. So for people worrying about the arb raise of Osuna in the coming years, the club is probably worried about the big raise Storen will get this year. The question is, why was this incentive given out to Storen in the first place? He's a good reliever not a stud.
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 Carrera is very bad. Yes I know. He's probably better then Lake and Brown though.

You start crossing your manager who is going to want to work for you.

Pretty sure the Nationals had to pay the difference between him and Revere so it wouldn't have mattered.

THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 (edited) So Gibby went full retard, just after Atkins went to bat for him, as an intelligent manager who loves "information", in yesterday's interview. I can understand the Osuna decision as a human element call, but I have nothing on the Carerra, Tepera, decisions. If you want to take someone north, while taking advantage of Ceciliani's options, why not bring Lake (who's much better than Carerra in every way and has plenty of untapped potential). The Tepera decision, however, is just completely mindless. He wasn't even good against lefties last year lol. http://i.snag.gy/6WrgR.jpg Venditte was the obvious choice with Choate gone and Girodo demoted. Edited March 30, 2016 by THANOS
CHRIS Verified Member Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 I don't really like Navarro but it's not hard to be better than Thole and Pompey is obviously a lot better than Zeke. I guess the other thing too is that if Thole prevents Martin from being killed by the knuckleball, then that's a plus as well, me thinks.

If Gibby doesn't know how to evaluate pitchers numbers he should be taught very soon. I just don't understand this decision at all. The board is going to explode when Tepera comes in to face 3 straight LHH and gives up the lead.

His results have still been okay, pretty sure it's not about long term sustainability here.

What are you trying to say?

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 Why does everyone presume Travis will automatically take over from Goins ? Because Goins isn't good enough to start for a contending team?
Cyborg Verified Member Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 Because Goins isn't good enough to start for a contending team? Not necessarily true. But its because Travis is much better than Goins.
Virgil_Hiltz Verified Member Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 yet Carrera still gets the job because the front office is worried about losing this tremendous asset through waivers. If Carrrera was ever claimed by the Yanks or BoSox it would be a major coup for the Jays. Not only an addition by subtraction but EC could actually be more valuable to the Jays playing for another AL East team!
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 I'm trying to say care more that Carerra made the team lol I think Tepera has a much better chance of losing a game than Carerra will. Carerra probably gets DFA'd in a month. In the Toronto Star it appears Gibby actually liked Ceciliani over Carrera FWIW. Gibbons seemed to prefer Ceciliani, who had a tremendous camp, leading the team in hits (15) and tying for the team lead in home runs (4) and RBI (10). But Ceciliani had minor-league options, so could be demoted to the minors without having to clear waivers. Carrera, on the other hand, is out of options and would likely have been claimed by another team if he didn’t make the Jays. http://www.thestar.com/sports/bluejays/2016/03/30/roberto-osuna-named-blue-jays-closer.html
