Spoonovic Verified Member Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 Good signing. He replaces Loup if Loup is injured for a long time. Lefties have hit 193/.274/.274 against Choate in his career.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 Good signing. A bit of depth for Buffalo with Loup hurting.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 Good move as long as Gibbons doesn't use him against righties which I fear he would not giving a f***
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 Good move as long as Gibbons doesn't use him against righties which I fear he would not giving a f*** The one thing Gibbons seems to understand, correct me if I'm wrong, is splits so I think he'd use him effectively.
Moo3 Verified Member Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 Uggh. He's almost 41. He tops out at 84 mph. Not nice. So much trash being mashed as minor league depth.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 A career spanning 15 seasons. 672 games. 408 total innings pitched. Text book definition of a LOOGY.
Laika Community Moderator Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 A career spanning 15 seasons. 672 games. 408 total innings pitched. Text book definition of a LOOGY. lol, he was in St. Louis for three full years and only pitched 98.2 innings. That's an easy way to make $7.5M.
Laika Community Moderator Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 A bit of depth for Buffalo with Loup hurting. Loup's scary injury has certainly highlighted one current lack of depth.
Trouba95 Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 If the Cards let him go, we shouldn't bother with him.
Cyborg Verified Member Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 If the Cards let him go, we shouldn't bother with him. Good logic.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 The one thing Gibbons seems to understand, correct me if I'm wrong, is splits so I think he'd use him effectively. He looks at splits but sometimes he just has a gut feeling about some guys. Hes got a lot of feelings in that gut but they might not be the right one. I'm all for depth less wear and tear. I would prefer Cecil not having to come into games in the 6th to get a tough lefty out and not being able to use him later. Guys like Choate, Loup, and even Giordo can help us a lot lf used properly. Probably the best bullpen we had in years. Osuna, Cecil, and Storen has to give you a lot of confidence in late inning situations.

Well we need players in Buffalo. We traded away the majority of our prospects and it's not like we are going to get Chris Sale like playing in Buffalo
gbill2004 Verified Member Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 Weird signing. Was Atkins drunk when he pulled this off?
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 Weird signing. Was Atkins drunk when he pulled this off? What? Atkins literally just picked up one more option to back up the big club. If Choate sucks he doesn't even see Toronto, so nothing is lost.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 Choate is done. Why do you say that?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 lol, he was in St. Louis for three full years and only pitched 98.2 innings. That's an easy way to make $7.5M. The games played to IP is remarkable. I've always liked Choate.
Maahfaace Verified Member Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 I've always liked Choda. we always knew this spanky

2lowitzki Verified Member Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 The great thing about Choate is that he is lefty and sidearm.. Although he only throws 84-85mph fastball, left handed hitters will have tough time hitting his ball He also has wipeout slider.. I was hoping that the Blue Jays will sign Matt Thornton (who eventually ended up in San Diego) He is just year younger than Choate, but he can still throw mid 90s fastball.
Key22 Verified Member Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 Yes all those never made it promising lousy bums who threw 97mph. I don't care if the guy throws underhand at 30mph if he gets the job done. Or you know there is always first round pick David Purcey and his 96mph big arm going to be an ace can't miss superstar lefty. Yeah that turned out REALLY well. Darren Oliver did okay here as I recall and he didn't exactly light up the gun. And then there was 20 game winner Jaime Moyer and his average 81.6mph fastball. If you can call it a fastball. He, as you may recall, had a pretty good - err rather excellent, career.
Rusty_Savage Verified Member Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 Nobody is asking for Chris Sale as minor league depth, realistically. I get that. Realistically, though, players like Randy Choate, who's been great against lefties in his career, are the types of players you get as minor league depth in March. The FA cupboard is pretty bare
