nmrch Verified Member Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 I for one am pretty ok with the Jays not offering up these outrageous contracts to any FA's. They're not at all outrageous if you understand how much baseball revenues have exploded in the last couple of years. The growth has been even greater than the cable deal boom we saw starting around 2008. And the players share of the pie is actually smaller than it is on other leagues, even Football i believe.

BTS Community Moderator Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 the value of pitching prospects just went up Do we have any of those?
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 Do we have any of those? We need to develop guys like Thor, Norris, and Hoffman. That's the key.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 Do we have any of those? we did a short time ago. the best set in baseball..... now, the worst set
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 Salary payouts seems to get higher and higher every year by a lot. I wonder if it will ever just stall for a couple of years or if the bubble will burst. But I guess as long as TV attendance and ballpark attendance continues to climb we'll continue to see huge deals

BTS Community Moderator Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 Who outside of Syndergaard has accomplished anything? Lets not get carried away here. I believe at one point Syndergaard, Stroman, Norris, Osuna, Sanchez, Desclafani, Castro, Boyd were all in the system. That may have been the best in baseball, I dunno.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 Arizona's tax rate is about 1/4 of California ~4% vs. ~13% That's much closer to 1/3 than 1/4.

That may have been the best in baseball, I dunno. Syndergaard/Desclafani were traded in the 2012 offseason. Stroman was drafted in June 2012 but he wasn't as *highly* regarded then.. coming off a PED suspension, + there was still talk of a future in the bullpen. Castro wasn't highly regarded until the 2014 season (2013 for those who followed closely). Boyd was drafted in 2013 but not thought of as much of anything until he started pitching well in the higher levels (beginning of 2015 season) Different years for most of these guys, for the most part. Although, the Stroman/Norris/Osuna/Sanchez/Hoffman pitching prospect core was prominent last offseason.

Could be a CY contender, a 1/2, a closer, a set-up man, a couple of mid-rotation starters, and a couple of back-end starers.

King Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 High expectations there Uhh.. Syndergaard = Cy Contender Stroman = 1/2 Osuna = Closer Sanchez = Setup man DeSclafani = midrotation starter Boyd/Norris = jury still out Seems reasonable to me.

BTS Community Moderator Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 High expectations there Not really. Everyone is pretty much there except Norris becoming a 2/3/4 and Boyd and Castro becoming a 4/5/6.

Value of these guys on open market ~$140M/yr Actual cost ~$4M/yr Also guys like Graveman, Nolin, Labourt, Tinoco, Castro, Hoffman, others

nmrch Verified Member Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 (edited) That's much closer to 1/3 than 1/4. Doesn't it depend on where your official residence is for the majority of the year? I don't know about Grienke but most of these guys live in Florida or Arizona in which case it would make no difference. I've always gotten the impression that taxes are something sports writers care more about than the players and agents, its almost never a deciding factor or even something they think about that much. King Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 How did I miss that Nicolino pitched 74 innings for the Marlins this past season? He Suxxxxxxx.

I've never watched Nicolino pitch, but it must be exceedingly weird. Nicolino in Miami might be the most TTO averse pitcher of our generation. If you set the min IP to 70 and look at every pitcher in the last 25 years, only one guy has a lower TTO/9 (add up BB/9, K/9, and HR/9) than Nicolino. Nicolino's is 6.20.... Bob Tewksbury. 31.3 career fWAR. 6.09 TTO/9. No relation to Bobby Tewksbary, Donaldson's hitting coach guy.
