reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/12/diamondbacks-to-sign-zack-greinke.html "Greinke will receive about $195MM over six years, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale tweets. That figure comes just $22MM short of David Price‘s $217MM deal with the Tigers, which was the largest ever for a pitcher. If Nightengale’s numbers are accurate, Greinke’s $32.5MM AAV will be the largest ever, eclipsing Price and Miguel Cabrera. Also, as the Bay Area News Group’s Andrew Baggarly tweets, Greinke will be taxed at a significantly lower rate in Arizona than in California." Largest EVER AAV given any player and it goes to a pitcher over 30, this is really a crazy time for baseball. A fairly small market team historically shells out that much for a veteran pitcher? Wow
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 It's actually 6/206. AAV of 34.33.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 Jays might end up looking pretty shrewd for locking up the likes of Estrada and Happ early.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted December 5, 2015 Author Posted December 5, 2015 Jays might end up looking pretty shrewd for locking up the likes of Estrada and Happ early. You'd think it might've been a stretch to sign BOTH guys. Pitching market is deep, but clearly there's 2 legit aces who are going to get paid. It's going to be interesting to see what the 2nd tier gets, Zimmermann got I believe a little more than I expected in the FAP contest.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 Would of liked the Jays to sign Donaldson long term by now. I'm sure his price has gone up with all of these signings in FA.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 In terms of comparing Happ and Estrada's contracts to the market, we saw a bit of the low end of the SP market today too with Pelfrey getting 2/$16. The remaining SP to watch are: Kazmir (obviously better than Happ/Estrada so should get more) Iwakuma (obviously better) Kennedy (slightly better or the same) Latos (slightly worse than both?) Fister (worse)
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 Would of liked the Jays to sign Donaldson long term by now. I'm sure his price has gone up with all of these signings in FA. When a 32-year old Greinke gets 6/206, a 33-year old Donaldson will be worth 6/250 3 years from now.

I'd take both Happ and Estrada over pelfrey for sure. His numbers are not impressive.

Unless get a fairly substantial discount on some FA years, I would probably go year to year with Donaldson. There's no reason to commit 30+ mil per year for 2019 and beyond.

Jays should be proactive and try to get Stroman signed as well. I'm sure Stroman would love to sign an extension in Toronto.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 42 a year, eh. Who's the first to break 40 AAV? Harper? If Stanton and Kershaw couldn't, it will be a while

JD is going to get a huge pay bump and if he has a good 2016 we might not be able to afford to keep him. I don't want the jays to get to insane but a guaranteed pay day now might be attractive to JD. He's probably going to command a Stanton or A-rod type deal
TRM Verified Member Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 If Stanton and Kershaw couldn't, it will be a while Harper is better than Stanton, and not a pitcher. He'll get 40
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 Harper might even get close to 50. I could see him getting 500 Million as crazy as that sounds.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 AA was preparing an offer for Greinke in August, but Shapiro did not bother. - Morosi's sources. In all seriousness, I agree the Jays seemed to have read the market well by signing guys early. If they waited they may have been left out in the cold with the AAV's being thrown around and Toronto not being a free agent destination. We will see how similar pitchers to Happ and Estrada do on the market.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 I didn't realize that they only had $32M in guaranteed contracts in Arizona. This still only puts them middle of the pack in projected numbers, and have some nice cheap pieces. Those projections have their top 6 dropping their production by almost half though.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 Harper is better than Stanton, and not a pitcher. He'll get 40 He seems to be a nice guy that is willing to take lesser to be happy though...
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 Greinke will receive an amazing $206.5MM over six years, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic tweets. While that will include some deferred money (via Rosenthal), the total comes just short of David Price‘s $217MM deal with the Tigers, which was the largest ever for a pitcher. (The amount of those deferrals isn’t yet known, but Rosenthal tweets that the present-day value of Greinke’s deal is around $90MM.) And Greinke’s contract is for only six years, compared to Price’s seven (although Price’s contains an opt-out, and Greinke’s does not, as ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick tweets). Greinke’s $34.42MM AAV will be baseball’s largest ever, blowing away both Price and Miguel Cabrera, who got $31MM.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 $206.5m $34.41m AAV. HOLY SHITBALLS!!!!
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 He seems to be a nice guy that is willing to take lesser to be happy though... All jokes aside, Trout strikes me as the type of guy who WOULD take a pay cut to play somewhere he likes. Not Harper though

WryNGinger Verified Member Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 I for one am pretty ok with the Jays not offering up these outrageous contracts to any FA's.
