The Analog Kid Verified Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 LaCava disappoint I sure don't know the guy personally but from the few interviews I've listened to he certainly doesn't instill any level of confidence as a G.M. He seems pleasant enough but comes across as a bit slow. I guess time will tell. This trade doesn't leave a great first impression.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 I just think you could of got a 4th/5th starter for less. Who exactly? Anyone less is probably looking to rebuild their value, and wouldn't be coming to one of the best hitting parks to do it. The other options would likely be much worse projection wise, or much more expensive. Chavez just put up back to back seasons of a sub 4 xFIP (3.67 and 3.89). That's not bad for a #5 starter.

Does anyone think LaCava was the main influence in making this trade? He's just doing the leg work for Shapiro, to say nothing good or bad about the situation.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Well I think there might be a delta between what he's "worth" in hypothetical $/WAR and what the free agent market would say that he's worth, that's all. If the Jays think he can start ~20 games and approach 2 WAR again then of course he's "worth" over 10 mill. But that doesn't mean they have to extend him for that much! Also comes down to the player. If he doesn't want to sign for less than 10 million and go to FA it won't matter what he is "worth".
Inklink Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 AA would've had Sonny Gray included in this trade. #BringBackAA

I trust him about as far as I could throw A.A.s chubby little body. A Rogers stooge. The dismantling of this team will be sad to watch.

dineke Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 If Osuna is a starter then 3/5ths of the rotation would be Mexican. That has to count for something right?
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 On the bright side, the "Give Chavez a QO" thread will be good for at least 50 pages.

THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 LaCava "Sanchez over Osuna to the rotation" Did he actually say that? Man, LaCava is really starting to look awful lately.

nextyear Verified Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Looking at the fangraphs game log for 2015, it seems that Jesse Chavez have several very good games and several bad games - http://www.fangraphs.com/statsd.aspx?playerid=5448&position=P The Oakland A's made so many errors that maybe that negatively affected his confidence. An improved defense behind him might do wonders for his performance in 2016 with the Blue Jays. Or maybe it won't ... It certainly is a big step down from David Price though. I want to think positively and hope that Jesse Chavez will be as big a surprise as Marco Estrada.
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 I don't get the hostility. It's a solid move??? I think if you polled the forum before tonight asking if they'd move Hendriks for Chavez the vast majority would say no. It could end well, but it's decidedly unsexy.

FrozenRopes Verified Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 My first reaction, good trade. Time will tell. Still have to find a 1A or 1B arm for the rotation.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Did he actually say that? Man, LaCava is really starting to look awful lately. Starting pitching is the Blue Jays‘ top priority even after re-signing Marco Estrada, interim GM Tony LaCava told reporters, including Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith. While LaCava recognized a need for bullpen help, he said the rotation is the primary focus, adding: “We may let the bullpen come to us a little bit.” Nicholson-Smith aptly notes that the relief market typically features many bargains later in the offseason, with names like Ryan Madson, Franklin Morales and Carlos Villanueva all among players who parlayed January minor league deals into strong 2015 seasons. Regarding internal rotation options, LaCava noted that Aaron Sanchez is more likely to transition to a starting role than Roberto Osuna, if the club decides to shift either’s role at all. LaCava explains that Sanchez has more experience starting, whereas health issues have prevented Osuna from going through a full five-month stretch as a starter. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/11/blue-jays-prioritizing-starting-pitching.html
GD Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 If Osuna is a starter then 3/5ths of the rotation would be Mexican. That has to count for something right? 4/5 when we trade for Carrasco.

dineke Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 4/5 when we trade for Carrasco. Stroman+ for Carrasco. Sign Gallardo, Sanchez as 6th starter. Mexioverload
FrozenRopes Verified Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Yet, Hendriks could be found internally or externally. He was traded at his highest value.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 He was traded at his highest value. He will have 60 saves next year and get traded for Freddie Freeman.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/11/blue-jays-prioritizing-starting-pitching.html There was nothing wrong with that quote. Sanchez has thrown more innings as a starter than Osuna and is far more likely of the two to be able to handle a starter's workload. The issue is Sanchez sucks as a starter and Osuna has the repertoire to be one but lacks the innings (and potentially has poor mechanics to be one long term). Both will end up in the pen. It wouldn't shock me if Sanchez is traded either, but that depends on whether AA's mancrush on Sanchez extended to LaCava as well.
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Yet, Hendriks could be found internally or externally. Until he proved he was a borderline elite reliever. His method of acquisition doesn't effect his current value.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Until he proved he was a borderline elite reliever. His method of acquisition doesn't effect his current value. Otherwise you'd have to make the same deduction for Chavez who was also a dumpster diving acquisition. It's a pretty dumb argument.
