Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 The 0-3 in Price starts arguments are just being made to illustrate the idea that there's no one blueprint for success. Identify areas where you can add wins, and then add them as efficiently as possible. Signing an ace to a 7-year free agent contract is about the worst way to possibly add wins. Price 7 years deal ++ + + - -- ------ -------

Farm Verified Member Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 Sign Heyward instead of Price. Then trade Encarnacion. f*** 10/5 rights. Or sign Heyward and Davis. Trade Bautista and Encarnacion. f*** 10/5 rights. Then in the middle of the season trade Heyward and Davis. STACKED FARM!!!
Maine Jays Verified Member Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 Price, Heyward and Davis please. need some good lefty bats in this lineup. While we're at it, let's dream for Kate Upton and Charlotte McKinney to move to Toronto, too.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 I don't think we won a single game that Price started, but we definitely need an ace for the playoffs. Yup. Signing David Price is probably the worst thing this team could do. Lackey, Kuma, Young, Hill are all much better targets. it has it's huge downside in the future, and might handcuff the team a bit, but it's hardly the worst thing they could do. I can't believe how many Jays shirts are still being worn as I walk around outside. Signing a player long term to chase a 2016 playoff run is short-sighted and could be dumb if they have zero salary increase commitment from ownership. But a Price signing early in the process probably sells twice as many season tickets as the Marlin and Mets trades did. Not to mention Price improves the team by a lot in 2016. I don't advocate a Price or any long term pitcher signing (at market value), and it doesn't seem to be a Shapiro thing to do but I would understand it if happens. Also, with Opt-Outs and trades the only players that seem to go to full term in FA contracts are the busts and the ones that sign with teams and have prolonged success.

You know I like to exaggerate.

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 Neither will be signed by the Jays.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 I could get behind Davis at the right price. His huge apparent risk might scare a lot of teams off and depress his market. He's a beast though. If you could get him on a 4 year deal he could be a great pickup. It's possible he's a 3 to 4 WAR improvement over what we currently have. He'd mash at RC. Lots of risk though. Seems similar to Josh Hamilton almost.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 The team as a whole had a 115 wRC+ against RHP, which was the best in the league by a significant margin. Our mark against LHP was 124, still the best in the league. Yup, against RHP this lineup was scary. Against LHP it was murderer's row.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 Price is going bye bye!!!
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 I'm more in favour of signing a #2/3 starter in the offseason than trading for one during the season when prices are astronomical. I think we can all agree you can't go into a playoff series with Dickey and Hutchison as half of your rotation and expect to win. I'll take Heyward over one of the big arms because I think he is a great fit for the team both in the lineup and defensively but I'm not wasting money on Chris Davis when it can be better spent elsewhere. Davis is exactly the type of player who gets over matched in the playoffs. Strikes out a 3rd of the time and against better pitching that would surely go up even more. Give me John Jaso a great OBP LH bat over Davis who is only going to cost like 10-15 million.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 I think it's cute that some people think we have a shot at landing anyone of consequence.
thatoneguy Old-Timey Member Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 I think it's cute that some people think we have a shot at landing anyone of consequence. Well I'd sure want to pitch in front of this offence compared to a lot of others (even with the hassle of moving to a new country/etc).
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 I think it's cute that some people think we have a shot at landing anyone of consequence. You mean like Russ Martin?
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 I think it's cute that some people think we have a shot at landing anyone of consequence. We have a great shot at landing anyone, it's about financial feasibility and if we want to take on that type of risk.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 Davis would be cool. Him along with a healthy Tulo would probably lead to multiple records being broken next year
JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 I think it's cute that some people think we have a shot at landing anyone of consequence. I think it's cute that some people think that we don't have a shot at landing a few decent pitchers. I doubt Shapiro sits still. He knows what is needed to win but his biggest challenge is to replenish our farm team and he made it clear that he wants a sustainable long term winning team.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 If the Jays aren't able to attract FA with this tremendous team, then they have a real problem. Will they offer enough money to have be taken seriously though?

I doubt this guy meant to say that Shapiro will sit still. I think he just doubts many FA will sign with Jays. Also, this is already a winning team that is expected contend next year so Shapiro doesn't need to get "what is needed to win". Shapiro will need to make solid moves to replace part of the roster, especially in SP, but it's already a darn good team. Having a winning team with a good payroll will help in sustaining the success. It will definitely help, in terms of seeing out a long-term vision, that Shapiro is the president. Unlike the previous GM's who had the 2 Pauls dictating the franchise's long term plans.
nmrch Verified Member Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 You mean like Russ Martin? There's reasons to believe Russ Martin was an exception. He was the biggest FA signing since AJ Burnett and even then Jays had to go with an extremely back loaded contract to fit him into the short term payroll. Martin was just one of those guys AA was obsessed with, that's what drove the signing and not any change of attitude towards FA spending. The numbers just don't add up, there isn't any money to make splashes in FA if there isn't a payroll bump.
nmrch Verified Member Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 The guy said "anyone of consequence". We could sign John Lackey and he could easily put up 3 WAR and win 18 games. I would consider that someone of consequence. Well i can't speak for anyone but i believe the poster intended to say that we wouldn't spend any significant amount of money on FA.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2015 Posted November 8, 2015 You mean like Russ Martin? I'm talking about this off-season.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2015 Posted November 8, 2015 We have a great shot at landing anyone, it's about financial feasibility and if we want to take on that type of risk. ... And I'm not confident that we'll be taking much risk.

Of course we have a shot. Rogers is loaded. And when i say adding anyone of consequence I'm talking this off-season and adding a significant course piece. Not an aging veteran for 2-3 years. The talk about Price, Davis, Heyward.... No chance anyone likes that ends up here.
