Started. I can't bare to watch it. They peaked again at the right time when we were sliding back a tad. Giant f***ing horseshoes up their ass. I guess that's ball.

ColdPint Verified Member Posted December 11, 2015 Posted December 11, 2015 Excellent article. Lott is the best. Years ago the Jays, Beeston I believe, gave up equalization payments intended to level the playing field with exchange rates. I can't remember though what the exact deal was and if it's something that could be revisited. Edit: That said, it may have been very well covered in this article......which I have not yet read.

It's not covered. Back in the Godfrey/JPR years, the Jays received equalization payments and as a show of gratitudes the Jays were good little soldiers and didn't go over slot in the draft (this may also have been a factor in why they didn't sign Bonds but that's just me speculating). When Beest and AA took over, they wanted to to go over slot so they gave that up the equalization payments.

For me, the one moment that represented the entire Royals playoff run was the play where JD struck his hardest hit ball all year with a runner in scoring position and lined out. After that, you just knew that it was the Royals year. Kind of like Connorp in one of our dynasty leagues.

Jeremy Accardo was on the team then and reporters were asking him about Bonds as a teammate and he had good things to say.

I believe the equalization payments were scrapped because we were spending a crazy of amount on International signings. The dollar also at one point was worth more than the American dollar in 2008, which I'm sure also played a part.

ClevelandBrownsFan2 Verified Member Posted December 11, 2015 Posted December 11, 2015 I get what you are saying but if pitchers get hurt this team will be giving starts to crap as well so I wouldn't exactly call our SP promising. I mean the Indians last year gave 13 Starts to trash so its not like there were fantastic in this area either. Well any team will have to start lesser pitchers if their top 5 get hurt, that's why you get depth, which is exactly what Shapiro has done. You got it. The idea is about spreading the risk around. Baseball is unique in that SPs only start every 5 days, not like a basketball or football team where your best players (barring injury) are going out there almost every single game. Brady and Rodgers QB 100% of games, not 20% like Ace SPs. So yes, I think not leaving gapping holes at the back of a rotation is sound roster construction.

No, but Buehrle is gone. If even you had signed Price and he and Stroman starts 30+ and you lose Estrada and Buehrle, you're still missing 15 starts by players who actually belong in a ML rotation. Plus the fact you'd rather not have the likes of Hutch and Sanchez pick up the amount of starts they did at the quality they offered. So, no there wasn't a depth issue in 2015, but don't kid yourself into thinking there wasn't one looming for 2016.

ClevelandBrownsFan2 Verified Member Posted December 11, 2015 Posted December 11, 2015 Our depth would be great if we had spent like 10-12M on relievers. If that's too much money then just deal Revere for a cheap reliever and the total outlay is like 6M. Stroman Estrada Happ Dickey Chavez In AAA: Hutchison, Sanchez, Osuna In ML bullpen: Lowe and Madson or Lowe + Kelley + Broxton. Then you call up Sanchez and Osuna down the stretch and you have Lowe + Kelley + Broxton + Sanchez + Osuna + Cecil + Loup. Pretty f***ing easy decision to me but we gotta blow like 50+M in surplus value from Sanchez and Osuna because Rogers can't put up another 10M or so into a team that has the best lineup we'll ever have. I agree with this. Sanchez and Osuna in AAA with some good relievers at the MLB level would be ideal. With what's left on the market, is it possible to get enough firepower in the bullpen to rationalize sending one of them to AAA? I hope.

Depth is good. Teams that are going to compete don't go into the season with 1. Ace (Price) 2. #2 (Stroman) 3. #3 (Dickey) 4. ???? (Scrap-heap) 5 ???? (AAAA) Doesn't matter how good the top 3 are, even in a best case scenario those guys are only starting 60% of the time. You have to play to win every game, not just 60% of them. Has Shapiro done anything to solve the depth issue though? If Hutch gets the #5 spot really there is only Chavez as SP depth. Outside of that there isn't anyone I'd be confident in giving starts to. I understand there is lots of offseason left so there is lots of time to get SP depth but I don't think we can sit here and say Shapiro has done a great job adding depth to the roster.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2015 Posted December 11, 2015 Our depth would be great if we had spent like 10-12M on relievers. Hutchison, Sanchez, and Osuna in AAA would be the ideal scenario, just not very likely. Maybe trade Revere for a reliever (say, Randall Delgado for example), and then sign Blanton. So the pen becomes Blanton, Cecil, Delgado, Loup, and fill in the rest with some rec projects or minor league signings. Probably wouldn't add much in terms of wins, but having three young SP's in AAA as depth would be great. Blanton + Delgado in that scenario = Revere's projected arb figure.

Thats why I would of kept Hendriks and let him close. Much easier to then put Sanchez/Osuna in the AAA rotation. IMO Hutch as #5 SP with Hendriks closing and 1 of Sanchez/Osuna in AAA>Chavez as #5 SP, Hutch in AAA and Osuna closing. This also would let you gain an extra year of control with Osuna as well.
