Considering how much money closers get in arb. I wonder if the Jays want to move Osuna out from the closer's role. Maybe have Cecil close this year?

Hell, given what Giles just got the Phillies the Jays should of just traded Osuna instead of Hendriks.

Atkins said there are a couple of things that are getting close but not imminent #BlueJays

close1

klōs/

adjective

1.

a short distance away or apart in space or time.

im·mi·nent

ˈimənənt/Submit

adjective

1.

about to happen.

I guess we can grant Atkins the subtle difference there. Good use of words, Ross Atkins. Good use of words.

I kind of miss "We continue to have dialogue with all teams as we look for ways to improve our club that make sense to us."

Miss you AA.

Shapiro is smart. Paying relievers big money is a cute expenditure that the truly big boys should be doing only

True, but scraping the bottom of the barrell and sitting by as all the talent gets taken is not a good strategy either.

You do know we have signed two SP's right?

Funny, it seems to work for a lot of teams.

Personally, I would have like the Jays to have signed a couple good relievers and traded Cecil. Would have likely gotten more in future surplus value than the money guaranteed and could rinse and repeat with the acquired relievers. Risky, but 35M in dead money for a 3 seasons wouldn't doom the club anyway, and that is worst case.

Some short, unsolicited thoughts on the off-season so far:

- The approach to go for 2 starters rather than one was a good one. Starting pitching depth has been a concern for a long time (as long as I can remember). Throwing starts to garbage pitchers as early as May some years got the team in a big hole, so this is promising.

- No new bats - well I guess we're spoiled now, and there's not much that could be done right now. There's a bit of surplus around the edges (Cola/Smoak, Saunders/ Revere, Goins/Barney) so maybe a trade happens as the off-season progresses to clear up the 25 man. If not, depth is good.

- Still waiting on relievers: I'd venture they're waiting for the musical chairs to end with the goal of picking the last man standing up on the cheap, I just hope it works out. Middle of the road relievers seem really hit and miss and terribly inconsistent, so let's just hope they hit on who they get.

- It would be ideal to have Hutch, Sanchez and Osuna start in AAA, but I'm not holding my breath.

I get what you are saying but if pitchers get hurt this team will be giving starts to crap as well so I wouldn't exactly call our SP promising. I mean the Indians last year gave 13 Starts to trash so its not like there were fantastic in this area either.

Fair enough.

I think (he didn't mention injury but it seemed like that's where the intent was) he was more getting at the idea that the probability of two 30+ pitchers on the Jays getting injured is lower than one 30+ pitcher getting injured (not necessarily true, but the idea is sound with some abstractions or additional information) and so you spread the risk, albeit at the cost of the spot in the rotation.
