Has there been any open discussions on the merits of trading Pillar+ for Soler and rolling with Soler/Pompey/Bautista? Soler would help replace the power if/when Jose or EE leave after next year and it frees up a spot for Pompey to excel. Revere stays on as the 4th OFer and as insurance encase Pompey can't hack it.

He has enough market value to be dealt for a good pitcher, though. Someone will buy in on the youth and ceiling.

There is much buzz that they will look to trade Soler for a pure CF, allowing them to plop the new guy in RF.

 

Most of the shine is off Soler. He looks like a hacker and a half. Those 60 hit / 65 power dreams don't seem likely anymore.

 

I certainly wouldn't want to move Pillar for him.

1. because essentially nobody expects Pillar to put up another 4 WAR season ever again.

2. because Soler is 23 and under contract until 2020.

3. because Soler was ranked (by BA) as the #12 prospect last year between Syndergaard and Sano and was one of the 3 best batters in the minors in 2014.

 

I love Pillar (can't help but root for him), but think I'd roll the dice - Soler was a beast in the minors. His K%'s were high, but not nearly as high as they were in what was a disappointing 2015 season. He also walked a fair share in the minors with BB% well over 10%. He has Puig/J.Upton potential with the bat (and hopefully without the baggage).

 

I think if you're given the perfect storm (as the article says, they are looking to upgrade and find a pure CFer) and can sell high on Pillar to land someone with the upside of Soler - you do it...especially when you have a replacement in Pompey...

 

Nevertheless - interesting discussion. I can only FAP to Travis's GF for so long.

IIRC, he was left off both Blue Jays playoff roster despite their being a clear need for a LHP and/or long man. Hard to feel great about where your career is going after that.

Yes, he does. It's completely irrational. I think I used to dominate with him in like MLB 2001 or something and have always had a soft spot for him.
