Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 Seriously, f*** Halladay. Guy asks for a trade out of town and practically walks on water with the fans. No one else gets that kind of pass from Toronto fans. f*** that guy. Bottom of my list. I guess we looked at that situation in a more contextual way. Halladay gave us the best years of his career for reasonable dollars and gave Ricciardi many years to field a contender around him. For him to ask to be traded to a competitive team in the twilight of his career -- behind closed doors and without making an ass of himself -- seemed reasonable. Also, from a fan's perspective, that was the best time to trade him in order to maximize the return.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 Halladay accomplished everything he was going to be able to as a Jay. I'm glad he racked up a no-hitter in the postseason 1 year later. He didn't have to smile for the camera or spend hours with the fans, just be as productive as you can day in and out I will like you as a fan for doing your job better than anyone else. Ironically at the time Haladay left the Jays were just as close as they were in 2012 They won 76, but were better then that, and had (what looked like) great building blocks in Lind and Hill. There was random bad luck (regression) with Hill and Lind, and random good luck with Jose. They won 85 and 81 the two years after Halladay left. Add in Halladay's 8 WAR those two years and they could of won.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 I don't get why this board doesn't really like Bautista. The s*** he's pulled against the Orioles, the Game 5 winner, been our best or close to best player for years now. I guess he hates umpires but who gives a s***. Toronto fans love a boy scout. Always have and always will.

Just a few piles of cold mashed potatoes is the worst you can say.

Exactly. Most if not all of these teams will be lining up to sign him up if he ever becomes a FA after '16

Sorry to say this but this guy comes across as a tool to me. Maybe I am misinterpreting the essence of the whole article cuz he starts of stating widely acknowledge facts with respect to his make-up/character. Then he compares Bautista's humility to other teammates to what end? Then calling him an old man as if he is already washed-up - There are many other teams who would love to have him in their fold for next year and maybe even the year after that - so much for insinuating he is an old man. What was the purpose of bringing Price's quote into the article especially since Price made it clear that he was not calling Bautista a "rat"? I am sure the other umpires/managers have never referred to Bautista as a "rat" so what was that all about? So what if Bautista gave the ump an evil stare? Sometimes their decision can cause any sane individual to go bonkers especially in crucial parts of the game. A wrong decision can change the whole batter's approach. He then brings up the case where Bautista sunk to the ground on another terrible call? That was a crucial at-bat in a crucial game that the umpire blew. Is Mr Simmons insinuating that a normal person would have just turned around and trotted to the dugout happily whistling a tune? I could go on some more about the article but it will only anger me some more. What's with the insinuation that he is not a supportive teammate. I do not agree with him as not being supportive but I can see why he would be cold towards reporters asking him about the play. It lead to an implosion so of course it will be a touchy subject. He said to go and look at the replay and if the writer did he should be able to understand that in a game where the crowd is roaring the players cannot hear themselves and as such have to depend on hand signals. From the replay it could be seen that Goins hand signals was saying "I've got it". What was that other piece of nonsense on Bautista's hitting? He is hitting 0-5 against the Royals but they walked him 4 times? Hitting is hard enough as it is and impossible when they are walking you instead. It's true Bautista attitude is abrasive at times and there are many who dislike him intensely but the whole slant of this article came off badly for me.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 Toronto fans love a boy scout. Always have and always will. I guess I'm part of the Bautista fan club! You'd think he was abusing women, kicking sand in the face of small children and starting fights in bars the way people on this board talk about him. Oh my god did you see Jose get upset during a highly competitive professional game where players get paid millions of dollars to perform. How could he do that..lol. I have enough self awareness that, if I was so blessed to have the physical ability to be able to play professional sports, that I wouldn't be a complete angel all the time in the heat of the moment. We have a lot of mother teresa types on this board it would seem.
Pulk_Pull Verified Member Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 Jose Bautista is the Chris Paul of the MLB. EDIT: LOL and I thought the Bautista haters would become obtuse before the defenders...

I don't know about the boy scout part - maybe in baseball but I don't see it in the other professional teams that we have. What I have noticed is that we care a LOT about how other cities view our team or athletes. I don't get it and maybe it's because I haven't lived in TO for a while now. At the end of the day, who cares if they are good people or not as long as they perform and deliver. When we go out to a movie, do we think about whether the actor/actress are "good" people or liked? We pay our money, they deliver a good performance and we all go home happy. Athletes = Entertainers Nothing more. Nothing less.

Pulk_Pull Verified Member Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 As I have said previously, my only issue with Bautista is his incessant arguing over balls/strikes. Everything else I'm cool with, especially the emotion shown after he either makes or misses a play.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 I don't care what anyone else says or thinks about Jose Bautista. Ive watched him since Day 1 as a Jay...I remember he started the year at leadoff for us and went on that season to hit 54 HRs coming from almost nowhere as a complete underdog. I've watched him play hurt...sustain production...back his team mates when the benches empty...make incredible plays with his arm...get drilled and then drill back going deep. He has an edge that isn't always likeable...but I will look back on his tenure here with nothing but fondness whenever it end. He is a competitor.

Yet it seems like Edwin, Martin, Donaldson, Tulo argue with the ump just as often if not more so. I think people are just remembering how Bautista acted 2 years ago and fail to realize how dramatically he's toned it down.
Swervin81 Verified Member Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 Huh? Sundin was deified in Toronto. I never heard a bad word about him. He was pretty well respected up until the team stopped making the playoffs. Once that happened, all these 90 year old geezers started calling Sundin a phony leader because apparently, he does not play with heart and is not vocal/demonstrative. I mean, last I checked, you can lead by example, but for some braindead idiots, the heart of a hockey player is measured by their passport. Yes, it's sad. That said, the absolute storm of s*** came down after that NTC thing. I never blamed him for it and even though it may look a little bit hypocritical, it is a tiny, microscopic blip on what was a great tenure in Toronto and all the great things he did for the Leafs. Too bad some people are nationalist f***tards that listen to Don Cherry and take his word as gospel and don't respect Sundin nearly as much as he should be and just use the NTC as a copout.
polar bear Verified Member Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 Stroman is probably cockier than Bautista. Bautista plays with as much passion and god forbid he f***ing cares. Baseball is hard and when you get f***ed over it sucks. Especially if you work as hard as he does. He is actually extremely humble in the assessment of himself. People build things up in their mind that actually doesn't exist. What the f*** are you snorting John ?

Personally, I find it pretty annoying when he argues every borderline strike; not because he's necessarily wrong, but because he seemingly has no concept of how f***ed we are if he gets himself ejected. the chances of him getting ejected are limited... Personally, I find it pretty annoying when he argues every borderline strike; not because he's necessarily wrong, bitching about pitches even though he is probably right gets us more bad calls. a lot of umpires are vindictive and umpires have a swarm mentality. how many calls do we get against us because umps hate Jose? the whole team pays for his whining.
