AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 They have some pretty choice words about Bautista. http://eedition.toronto.24hrs.ca/epaper/viewer.aspx I think if we're being honest, we'd all strongly dislike him if he didn't play for Toronto.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 Yeah of course we would, but he does, so we let it slide. Personally, I find it pretty annoying when he argues every borderline strike; not because he's necessarily wrong, but because he seemingly has no concept of how f***ed we are if he gets himself ejected.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 Also, I've never heard of this paper before today so I'm not really convinced I should care what they think.

Well maybe maybe not. I'd say half of my non-Jays fans friend love him. They think his bat flips are awesome.

Ehjays Verified Member Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 I'd strongly dislike any great arrogant player thats not on my team. I'm glad we have Bautista. He reminds me alot of George Bell. But I was glad to have him on my team as well.
Ehjays Verified Member Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 Stroman>Halladay>Edwin>Wells>Donaldson>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Bautista Ouch!!....No way fans like Stroman more than Halladay YET.
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 Ouch!!....No way fans like Stroman more than Halladay YET. I think lots probably do. Halladay had zero personality. Stroman is a future hall of famer anyway.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 And if my aunt had a dick she'd be my uncle. Bautista is f***ing awesome.

What's Edwin's personality? He lifts an elbow when he hits a homerun and you've probably heard him speak English 3 times. Edit: When he tossed Barry Davis aside, he definitely earned brownie points from me.

jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 Meh off the field Bautista seems like a good guy. Lawrie was a douche on and off so I could see the dislike for him
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 People won't be happy until hes run out of town. I seriously don't give a s*** if people like him or not. So tired of hearing about it.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 Steve Simmons talks about Batting Average as though its the Holy Grail.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 Stroman is probably cockier than Bautista. Bautista plays with as much passion and god forbid he f***ing cares. Baseball is hard and when you get f***ed over it sucks. Especially if you work as hard as he does. He is actually extremely humble in the assessment of himself. People build things up in their mind that actually doesn't exist.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 I don't get why this board doesn't really like Bautista. The s*** he's pulled against the Orioles, the Game 5 winner, been our best or close to best player for years now. I guess he hates umpires but who gives a s***.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 I'm with you. I think my non-Jays fans friend like him more than the consensus of this board does. And Jays fans who don't post here mostly love him as well. For whatever reason it's just this board.

If you're someone from an impoverished situation, who may not even know anything about baseball and receives benefits from the charitable work that Jose does, you probably think he's an amazing guy. It's all a matter of perspective and what you value most. I think you might be focusing on the wrong things when determining what type of guy Jose is, but then again I do quite a bit of charitable work myself so I value people who give back to those less fortunate.
Statman Verified Member Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 Halladay was a big fraud especially in terms of locker room likability with teammates. Personally though I would vote Donaldson > Stroman > Encarnacion > Halladay > Bautista
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 Recent franchise player likability rankings: Halladay >>>>>> Edwin>Donaldson>Bautista Seriously, f*** Halladay. Guy asks for a trade out of town and practically walks on water with the fans. No one else gets that kind of pass from Toronto fans. f*** that guy. Bottom of my list.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 Edwin is adorable. Yeah a lot of fans think so. He does seem to have fun when he's playing (but not over the top like Reyes).
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 You guys are all wrong. Revere>>>>>>Martin>Stroman>Travis>Tulowitzki THEN comes Edwin>Donaldson>Bautista. I f***ing love Devon Travis and can't wait until he's back.

He doesn't just hate umpires, he takes every chance he gets to give them the sass. Being one of our best players doesn't automatically mean we have to like him, just like how Jonny Mac was far from a great player and was beloved. Bautista's attitude is annoying as f*** 90% of the time and awesome as hell the other 10%. While he doesn't build himself up in interviews, he definitely thinks his way of viewing the world is the correct one. Difference between his arrogance and Stoman's confidence. EDIT: Side comment... no doubt Bautista does some great community work and I don't doubt him as a person outside the ballpark, but on the grass his arrogance is hard to ignore; and I'm talking past the simple emotions he displays.

Jose is ultra competitive, and certainly confident, but you are coming in here and posting with the utmost confidence and conviction calling out a player. Do you feel your personality type is more like Jose or Devon Travis?

I'm glad he racked up a no-hitter in the postseason 1 year later. He didn't have to smile for the camera or spend hours with the fans, just be as productive as you can day in and out I will like you as a fan for doing your job better than anyone else.

Jose is ultra competitive, and certainly confident, but you are coming in here and posting with the utmost confidence and conviction calling out a player. Do you feel your personality type is more like Jose or Devon Travis? I'm a hybrid when I play sports. I get competitive and emotional, but I also know I'm not the only perspective or opinion on the court AND that sometimes calls are wrong, so I respect others. I have no problem with emotional outbursts (e.g., bat flipping, yelling when he misses a pitch), but it's his arrogance around what HE FEELS is right and wrong, and how he struggles to accept that sometimes he is wrong. For example... from http://www.cbc.ca/sports/baseball/mlb/jays-jose-bautista-addresses-emotional-outbursts-with-umpires-1.1367486 Asked about it the next day, Bautista said he reacts to umpires because he plays with emotion. "When I see something out of line and that I think in my head looks out of place, I react," Bautista said. "I'm not sitting there turning around yelling at them all the time, a lot of times I just react and get back in the box and try to battle. "Sometimes I have trouble more than other players dealing with my production being affected by somebody else's mediocrity. It's just the way that I am as a person, it's a tougher pill to swallow for me sometimes." But he didn't stop there. Asked if he was paying for past reactions, Bautista said he's not a robot and cannot control his emotions all the time. He asked reporters to judge it case by case. "Is that professional, just because one guy reacts more than the other — that every time it's a close pitch, it's a strike? Or are you going to go by the parameters defined by major league baseball what's a strike or what's a ball. I'll let you decide what's right and what's wrong on that one."

He let JPR know that he wouldn't likely be re-signing the following year as a free agent. This after years of service on a team going nowhere. I don't begrudge him that.
