They were down, kick them, dont even let them feel they get back in game, nor even gain momentum. You have to play percentages and hedge bets. By bringing Price in, you eliminated David Price pitching in probably a more key situation game 5, a game you also have to win, because of a short sighted decision in game 4 which was completely unnecessary. That's why it was a dumb move.

Belliss101 Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 I can't believe some of the crap I'm reading here today. DAVID PRICE IS OUR ACE. END OF STORY! NOW JUST SHUT UP! ALL OF YOU.

Price won't be needed Wednesday, hopefully the BP won't either.
Nafro Verified Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 If you told me at the beginning of the year I could get David Price for a Division clinching pennant drive and the playoffs for Daniel Norris, Matt Boyd and Jairo Labourt...I would have told you maybe... if Dave Dombrowski decided to start smoking crack.
FrozenRopes Verified Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 He's fine, just a little too amped. His talent level is too high for this to not level out.

I don't get it. Return was pretty fair for Detroit.
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2015 Author Posted October 13, 2015 I don't get it. Return was pretty fair for Detroit. I suspect the logic is Price > Norris + Boyd + Laibourt. Therefore, we won that trade. Things like salary and years of control aren't really factored in.
Nafro Verified Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 For one thing. I did not think David Price would be available. For another there were questions as to whether Matt Boyd could succeed at the next level (still is somewhat). Labourt had a good arm but there were questions of control. Both Labourt and Boyd had great first half's of the season. So yes I agree that they got a good return. I'm saying what my reaction would have been prior to this season starting.

Even if for one half season and the playoffs. The key word being post season baseball.

Norris was basically the second-coming of Jesus in March. I bet like 90+% of Jays fans wouldn't have traded him straight up for Price back then.
Nafro Verified Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Its not about "WINNING" a trade. Its about making your major league team better...you have to give up something to do that.

He'll be a decent starter probably, but I am not convinced he'll ever be more than a mid rotation guy.

I bet like 90+% of Jays fans wouldn't have traded him straight up for Price back then. That's kind of funny. I'll take the ten percent that would have made that trade without thinking twice 10/10 times. Nothing against Daniel Norris. I think he's going to be great.
birchy Verified Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 The few of us that were okay with Dickey starting today got ripped a new one by a bunch of people here in the GDT yesterday... one guy asked me if I was "an idiot or Mexican" in Spanish.. classy. Dickey outpitched Price today, no question. Dude just hasn't performed in the playoffs to date.. putting him in an elimination game scares the crap out of me.

Nothing against Daniel Norris. I think he's going to be great. It definitely wasn't cut and dry and the time. Norris' numbers last year were absolutely silly in AA and AAA. Trading a borderline top-10 prospect for one year of anyone is a risky proposition. If you guess wrong, it could be franchise crippling.
Nafro Verified Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Silly numbers at AA/AAA are not the same as silly numbers in the Show. There have been 100's of prospects who have dominated in the minor leagues for a year or two. There are 5-10 per generation who do it for an extended period of time in the big league's, while staying healthy.

All the same, consistently trading 6 years of cheap high end talent for 1 year of proven but expensive talent is method of team building that will prevent perpetual contention.

Absolutely agree. Doing it from time to time (Hoffman,Norris, Syndergaard), while proving you can effectively evaluate and develop young controllable talent (Stroman, Osuna, Sanchez, Pillar, Goins, Travis), is a little different.
OBPlover Verified Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Everything involving David Price makes perfect sense and I for one, applaud the way Gibbons has handled him. Look he's your overall best starting pitcher. There's no doubt his body of work from acquisition to October was the best overall pitching performance. So you can't, NOT use him in the playoffs. On the other hand, he's in the middle of a terrible pitching slump. So you can't rely on him to be your game 5 do or die starter. 0% of managers in this league would have worked Dickey to the 6th or 7th, unless he started getting hit hard, then a middle reliver-Sanchez-Osuna, but they would also have started Price in game 5. By putting in Price, they are resting their overworked bullpen and their 41 year old starter and against a team who have by far and away their best hitters as Left handed (only Beltre stands out for righties and he's hurt) so he's a good option to preserve the lead in a do or die game. You're trying to build Price's confidence by not having him pitch in a pressure situation since you have a 6 run lead. You are not relying on a slumping starter. You are preserving your bullpen and letting your hottest pitcher pitch your most critical game, all with one move. It's the best I've ever seen of Gibbons.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 I agree with Gibbons decision. Imagine what people would be saying if it played out like this: Leave dickey in, Texas lefties pound him for 3 runs. Pull him in the 5th for Hawkins who gives up 2. The 7th and 8th the Rangers scrap out a run and we head to the bottom of the 9th leading 8-7. Pressure gets to Osuna and the Rangers walk it off. We go home to golf. This board: "what the f*** is ol gibby thinking? Losing the game with your best two pitchers scratching their balls in the bull pen. Fire the moron!" This was win or die. We now got our best pitcher to start game 5 with the bullpen ready to go.
drveets Verified Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 our so called ace has allowed 8 runs this series. i'm glad stroman is pitching wednesday.

Trading a borderline top-10 prospect for one year of anyone is a risky proposition. If you guess wrong, it could be franchise crippling. How is trading away a potential 1/2 starter "franchise crippling"? To me, "franchise crippling" moves would be extending both Jose and Edwin, signing Price to a 200 million dollar deal, etc.
admin Site Manager Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Pretty interested out of four starters Price has been our worst. If we win Wednesday it will be interesting to see how the rotation pans out. Will they still go with four starters?

Price has matched up better against the 'stros than the Royals ... at least for this year
Caper Verified Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 I just think it's nothing more then Price is tired. He has a lot of miles on that arm this year. Also, this is why you don't want Price in any kind of long term deal. He might be pretty sketchy when he hits 32-33.
