Ray Verified Member Posted September 2, 2022 Posted September 2, 2022 Is Pearson one of the biggest disappointments league wide in the last few years? Forrest Whitley's gotta be up there. He was almost universally heralded as the best pitching prospect for a couple years.
Ray Verified Member Posted September 2, 2022 Posted September 2, 2022 sure but there are lots of top prospects who don't produce Bart, Adell, Kelenic, Whitley, McKay, Pache, Kieboom..... these are just a few examples of highly ranked players from Pearson's "class" who have been mostly useless. Bart might be able to carve out a Zunino like career. Honestly, as far as Pearson goes, he still can be a valuable piece for a good team. He still has loads of ability. Just a proclivity to get hurt. He actually pitched quite well out of the pen last September.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2022 Posted September 2, 2022 Future Superstar Nick Frasso Update: He threw the second AA game of his career at age 24 (by this rate he'll be in the big leagues no later than age 30) and this time he unleashed an entire 2.2 innings. The future workhorse struck out 3 but unfortunately got knocked around by giving up 4 hits, 1BB and a HR to a 26 year old org guy from Australia named Robbie Glendinning. Apparently the Robbie Glendinning's of the minor league circuit are presenting more of a challenge then the 19 year olds Frasso was facing in A-ball. The outing raised his ERA to 5.40 in AA but I have little doubt that once he repeats the level next year at age 24/25 he'll be dicing up those 21 year old prospects just like he diced up those 19 year olds in A-ball. Follow along as we track his rise to superstardom!

About 1.5 seasons of good production, but other than that quite useless and often injured

AMS528 Verified Member Posted September 9, 2022 Posted September 9, 2022 Jordan Groshans, still not hitting for a lot of power, but a lot more than he did while he was here anyways. 306/395/439. Has managed to get 9 xBH in less than half the ABs. Annoying that his numbers have been so much better there. He'd have still been a fairly touted prospect with those numbers and his low K, decent walk rates. Not that Anthony Bass has been bad, but Groshans could have pulled more value in a deal.

He had an ~11 game stretch immediately after being traded wherein he hit almost all of those doubles. Since then, the XBH's have slowed down considerably once again. I don't think that MLB teams would have valued him much differently over a sample that small, given how extensive his lapse in power has been.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted September 13, 2022 Posted September 13, 2022 Gabriel Martinez age '18' and '19' seasons actually compare favorably to Bo Bichette's, though Martinez is an 'old' 19 year old, having turned 20 in late July. Age 18 Bo hit .420 in a Rookie league, Martinez hit .330 with a much better k/bb, they had almost the same on base percentage. Age 19 low A - Bo hit .384 in low A, Martinez .284 but their k/bb and power were comparable. Age 19 High A - identical short stints. Both hitting around .320 .380 .480 with good k/bb. And he's supposedly like the 9th best prospect in the system. Farm system is pretty interesting right now. Dasan Brown is like the 30th guy, and he's having a decent season in Vancouver as a 20 year old.

Some publications re-order players midseason but they don't do a full re-assessment of everybody until the offseason. There is no way Brown is 30th with those numbers and his tools, he might even be top 20 now. Similar things for Gabriel Martinez he might be top 6 or so.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2022 Posted September 14, 2022 BA on a couple of under the radar Jays pitchers with great sliders: Dahian Santos, RHP, Blue Jays The Blue Jays have had a banner year for pitching on the farm. Despite trading away 2021 first-rounder and highly regarded college starter Gunnar Hoglund, the Jays saw several breakouts on the pitching side this season, highlighted by Ricky Tiedemann, Yosver Zulueta and Hayden Juenger. One of the brightest breakouts was the 19-year-old Santos. The righthander performed well over 19 appearances with Low-A Dunedin before seeing a late-season promotion to High-A Vancouver. The undersized righthander has an unusual operation and arm action that allow his pitches to play up, particularly his slider. Santos utilizes a tall-and-fall operation with a low sidearm action that plays up his horizontal movement upon release. As you would expect from any low-slot slinger, Santos’ slider generates heavy sweep. Sitting 80-82 mph with 2,700-2,800 rpm of raw spin, Santos generates on average 14 to 15 inches of sweep with very little to no vertical break. The pitch is Santos’ go-to offering, seeing nearly identical usage to that of his fastball. While still learning to command the pitch, Santos generates whiffs on 57% of swings and chases on 35% of swings. In a breakout season for Santos, his slider was the nucleus of his success. Trent Palmer, RHP, Blue Jays Drafted in the third round of the 2020 draft out of Jacksonville, Palmer tosses one of the filthiest sliders in the minors. The sweeper Palmer throws is unusual due to the amount of vertical break he generates while simultaneously getting on average 10 inches of horizontal break. Palmer utilizes a low sidearm action that allows the ball to play up out of his hand. This works particularly well when Palmer throws his slider as it has elements of its movement profile that are in-line with cutters while getting more horizontal break than a cutter. It’s a truly unique pitch. Sitting 80-83 mph with spin rates in the 2,300-2,400 rpm range, Palmer generates a foot of ride with 10 inches of horizontal break. That combination of movement and unique release characteristics drove success for Palmer’s slider in 2022. The righthander generated whiffs on 33% of swings against the pitch while getting chases at an average rate. Palmer’s slider graded out the highest of his pitches on Stuff+ models, with grades north of 140.
