John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted November 26, 2021 Posted November 26, 2021 No way the Jays took Hoglund to be a reliever, lol... JH's f***ed on this one. I don’t think they took him as a reliever, I just think that’s where he ends up. He’s got 1 plus pitch, a slightly above average fastball, and …. Hope he develops a changeup into average with time. In his favour, apparently he had good command of the fastball. Slider is a swing and miss chase pitch but generally doesn’t throw it for strikes…yet. Changeup is a work in progress. Right now, looking at his arsenal he’d profile at the back end of the rotation, 4-5…maybe 3 if all all breaks the right way. I choose to hedge on the downside of this particular gentleman. They didn’t draft Pearson as a reliever either but every year he gets closer to that role.

Hah, he just got drafted 19th overall, man. And seen as a top ten talent before he was hurt. Hold dem Horses by'
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted November 26, 2021 Posted November 26, 2021 I mean you could hedge on every pitcher ever taken that they will be a reliever and you’d be right more often than not.

True. I generally don't though. I hope he remains a starter, but I'm just struggling to see it without a 3rd pitch that even profiles as average in the future. There's always the possibility that with pro instruction his changeup takes a leap forward. That's obviously the hope here.

I think you're discounting the growth and development he'll have over the next 2-3 years. Manoah spent half his college career in the arm barn and only had 2 pitches too.

It's plus pitchability and plus command. The changeup flashes above-average and the fact that he doesn't throw 3-4 pitches in college isn't indicative of inability or lack thereof (as was the case with Manoah). Pearson looks like a reliever because he has no command of where the ball is going and he keeps getting hurt. That is a completely different scenario.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted November 26, 2021 Posted November 26, 2021 I didn't renew my BA sub this year but looks like we are picking up another Venezuelan Catcher.
metafour Verified Member Posted November 26, 2021 Posted November 26, 2021 Here's why Hagen Danner was added to the 40-man: https://www.sportsnet.ca/mlb/article/blue-jays-prospect-hagen-danner-progresses-on-mound-after-hitting-struggles/ Danner’s recent showing at the Blue Jays’ fall instructional camp – when he sat 98-99 m.p.h. with his fastball and touched 100 for the first time – helped cement his spot on the 40-man roster, an indicator of near-term big-league potential. Perhaps more important than the velocity jump is that he spent time inside the Blue Jays’ pitching lab at the Dunedin complex and worked with staff there to develop a slider “that's probably going to be my favourite pitch.”
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted November 26, 2021 Posted November 26, 2021 Going to be interesting to see if any more in house relievers start to filter their way onto the MLB roster this coming season. Romano made it, Mayza as well. Borucki kind of fizzled but I wouldn't count him out totally yet if he can learn to command his pitches he's got solid stuff. Snead and Saucedo both got a taste last season, looked OK I guess. Guys like Taylor and Stadler supposedly have major heat to bring, but control issues. Danner got added to the 40 man, Johnston had one hell of a season last year and made it up to AAA, although he is a big time FIP and xFIP beater. Spraker supposedly has good stuff and was named the AFL's best reliever. Then you have Adrian Hernandez down in AA with a 15K/9 average at 21 years old, good lord.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2021 Posted November 27, 2021 Agreed - it would be huge if we could fill a portion of our bullpen with home grown talent that costs next to nothing and is under control for 6 years.

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2021 Posted November 27, 2021 Spraker was unprotected, he gone. Yeah, but hopefully he'll suck on fire in the bigs for a few months, then get returned and be good again. Romano style!
jimedmonds Verified Member Posted December 2, 2021 Posted December 2, 2021 I keep reading about the expendability of Kirk with the inclement arrival of Moreno. Is this really a necessity? What prevents them from having a C/DH platoon to ensure career and season-long longevity?

What prevents them from having a C/DH platoon to ensure career and season-long longevity? Jansen, Kirk, Moreno. All young. Doesn’t make any sense to hold 3 rookie catchers on a major league roster, the guys need reps in order to fully develop. It would probably be better to have a vet around like Caleb Joseph for example

What prevents them from having a C/DH platoon to ensure career and season-long longevity? It’s definitely not a necessity but Kirk is a bit of an enigma on the current roster. On one hand he could easily slot in as the DH most days while catching 2x a week which makes him a valuable player. On the other hand he’s quite expendable under the current roster construction because: A) you’re dealing from a surplus of catchers he’s probably the worst defender of the three C) he’s the catcher who holds the most trade value D) he’s a proven major league commodity and young catchers are hard to acquire Kirk can be dangled as part of a package for an SP or an infielder and the Jays can roll with Jansen/McGuire to start 2022. Jansen’s strong finish and great D give a lot of people confidence in him to be an average catcher at least.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 2, 2021 Posted December 2, 2021 If I'm the Jays I still HOPE that Pearson becomes a solid SP But I'm not counting on it and I'm going into this season presuming that he WON'T be and making roster decisions accordingly
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 2, 2021 Posted December 2, 2021 No team has ever lamented having too many good staring pitchers at the trade deadline
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2021 Posted December 2, 2021 I keep reading about the expendability of Kirk with the inclement arrival of Moreno. Is this really a necessity? What prevents them from having a C/DH platoon to ensure career and season-long longevity? It's not a necessity to move him, but they could balance the roster out better if they moved him for someone who fills an org need (ex. 3B, SP). The only other option would be to start him at DH and let him catch on the days when they want to use the DH spot for one of the on field regulars. That could work, and it's probably a decent option considering how good of a hitter Kirk projects to be, but it comes down to whether that scenario has more value to the team than whatever Kirk could bring back in a trade.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2021 Posted December 2, 2021 Isn't Groshans expected to stick at 3B though? Yes. Between Groshans, Martinez and even Moreno - I wouldn't consider 3rd base an 'org need'. We might need a short term bridge, but I have to think one of those guys is going to be the long term solution, on the cheap for the foreseeable future. I'm not even sure SP'ing is a 'org need' right now. Gausman, Berrios and Manoah are locked in for 5+ years and we still have Ryu and Pearson with Hogland on his way. Maybe a hair more depth there wouldn't hurt. I think we need to find a long term solution in CF. I imagine Springer is moving to RF by next year.

Smith still does have excellent MiLB numbers, outside of his 2019 that was marred by an ill advised swing change. He sucked on fire in the MLB, but nobody here (except that hong guy, probably) is going to look at a 36 PA sample size and think that means anything. I'm not saying we should go into 2022 relying on him to play all star level 3B, but I am saying that we shouldn't completely count him out.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted December 2, 2021 Posted December 2, 2021 I dunno, I think Espinal can be the "short term bridge" at 3B until Moreno/Groshans/Martinez are ready no? He had 2.2 fWAR last season and still projects to be a positive contributor this season according to steamer. Seager only projects to be marginally better. Plus you've got a bit of a wild card with Smith as well. Totally unproven at the MLB level, but he has plus speed, plus defense and f***ing mashed AAA last season as a rookie. I was against going with a combo of Biggio at 2B and Espinal at 3B earlier on, but I think I'm OK with it now that they are trying Moreno at 3B and as long as they take that extra money and put it into a solid 5th starter and the bullpen.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2021 Author Posted December 2, 2021 Isn't Groshans expected to stick at 3B though? First one in, wins. The other can (will likely) be used as capital to fill other holes.
