P2F Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2017 Posted September 1, 2017 I think we need to temper expectations a bit on Vlad. We're already putting him as a first ballot HOF before he even sees an at bat at AA. Amazing talent, for sure, let's just not set up ourselves for Travis Snider disappointment. http://i.imgur.com/7K3Mx9D.gif

First ballot... that's for chumps. They'll actually waive the requisite waiting period for HOF eligibility for Vlad JR, just like the NHL did for Gretzky.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2017 Posted September 1, 2017 Complete and utter dreaming, but a future core of Alford, Hernandez, Bichette, Vlad, Tellez, Gurriel and Jansen, with Pearson as a legit front end starter....SRF maybe a lights out closer... I'm getting wood just thinking about it.
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 1, 2017 Posted September 1, 2017 I think it's absurd to suggest 80 hit 80 power ceiling, when there's nobody that's ever had that combo before. Just be conservative, call it 70/70 and move along. Babe? Bonds?
BTS Community Moderator Posted September 1, 2017 Posted September 1, 2017 Babe? Bonds? Prime Pujols was what, 80 hit, 70 power?

Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2017 Posted September 2, 2017 Oh i totally agree, but there is a certain someone here who feels that Vladdy's future at third base hinges on what happens with JD. Well it does, you buffoon!
ColdPint Verified Member Posted September 2, 2017 Posted September 2, 2017 Too late. I let my hype get out of control. Yeah, same here honestly. I was just thinking someone needed to be the voice of reason. Vladdy 2018.

I feel like it would be one thing if the fanbase was driving all the hype, but in this case, the prospect outlets are pushing his hype into the stratosphere.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2017 Posted September 2, 2017 Vlad is going to cause more boners in the GTA than Viagra. The hype is real folks.

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2017 Author Posted September 2, 2017 Over/under 3000 hits and 500 home runs? 3000 home runs
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 2, 2017 Posted September 2, 2017 Prime Pujols was what, 80 hit, 70 power? I don't even know if you'd call it 70 raw to be honest. An 80 grade hitter can hit a lot of homers based on pure hitting skills. I mean maybe, I don't really know, but 80/60 can for sure = 40 bombs some seasons IMO.
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 2, 2017 Posted September 2, 2017 Pujols is a fun comp too. Ostensible 3B in minors, very low K rates, perternatural hitting skills. Hmm
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2017 Posted September 2, 2017 Babe? Bonds? Was Bonds really an 80 hit tool though? And I'm not sure there's really an accurate system for rating players of the past compared to today... skills wise.

Bonds in his unbelievable years maybe, but probably not when he first came up.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2017 Posted September 2, 2017 I guess what I was saying is... an 80 hit tool in 1920 probably doesn't compare to an 80 hit tool today. I think Altuve would be the benchmark hit tool these days

I think Altuve would be the benchmark hit tool these days Mike Trout? He strikes out a bit more than your prototypical 80 hitter but someone who's on their 6th consecutive season of 170 wRC+ and possibly getting better has to have at least one 80 grade tool, and Trout's isn't power.

Most people would probably say Trout is a 70 hit tool. There isn't really a common definition of hit tool but most people use definitions like: - ability to square up the baseball - ability to hit for average - ability to make contact Trout probably strikes out too much to get an 80. Altuve is the best current candidate. Other historic examples would probably be prime Miggy, Pujols, Mauer. Ichiro. Tony Gwynn! Probably Vlad too.
