Agree with you on that. Howard had better minor league numbers, and a better break-out season (kept it up for 162 games).

Mark Reynolds, Adam Dunn, guys who strike out 200+ times don't have a run as "best hitter in baseball". Kind of more like .240 hitters with 35-40 homers.

Really good hitters strike out about half as much, Pujols, Frank Thomas.

Mike Trout I guess is an exception. A great hitter striking out 150 times a year... but 150 isn't 200 and Trout is a freak.

Strikeout totals are deceiving IMO, that's why percentages are used to often. Trout struck out 26% of the time in 2014, a tad high but not alarming. He then promptly corrected that and his strikeout rate has declined every year since: 23.2% in 2015, 20.1% in 2016 and 19.5% this year.

Side note: Altuve better f***ing win the MVP this year. He's been ridiculous and Trout being injured for as long as he did probably cost him what should have been a unanimous win. Judge has actually lost value due to his poor second half.

Chris Sale is on pace for a 9 WAR season and should get some votes for MVP.

It should be Altuve. The NL will be interesting. I'm curious to see if Anthony Rendon gets any recognition (currently leading all MLB hitters in WAR right now - above Altuve). I doubt he does. Goldy, Stanton probably land 1 - 2. Votto, Blackmon + Harper are right there too though. Great years.

I love looking at the leaderboard these days and picking out the guys who really surprised me. Right now they include:

- Eugenio Suarez (4.5 WAR - 130 wRC+)

- Chris Taylor (4.7 WAR, 140 wRC+)

- Tommy Pham (4.3 WAR, 143 wRC+)

- Jon Schoop (3.9 WAR, 135 wRC+)

Also love to see Alex Bregman up to a wRC+ of 127. Slow start, but he's on fire in the second half with a wRC+ of 166. What a stud.

Oh right, I totally forgot about him. Didn't even consider the pitchers, Sale may very well get the award and it would probably be deserved.

I'm not sure I like the idea of pitchers being MVP eligible. If there was Cy Young and a separate award for best offensive player, then I'd be OK with the MVP including everyone.

I have no problem giving the MVP to a pitcher if he was the league's most valuable player. Sale has definitely had the kind of season that puts you in the conversation.

Yeah I'm OK with it personally. A pitcher has to be completely dominant to even be considered, and there's only been Verlander as an AL pitcher MVP in the last 25 years.

I get that. But players can't win a pitching award, so my main point is that I'd like to see an award for offence only as well.

I don't think it really happens enough to be an issue, and some years it could water down the MVP if a different position player won the two awards (unless you keep the same voters for both awards it could happen in a close year).

They could have a "super" silver slugger the way they have both gold gloves and an overall defensive player of the year.

Borucki gets the start in Buffalo tonight. Would it be safe to assume that if he pitches well tonight that his next start will be for the Blue Jays?

He's already on the 40 man roster so why not? With Biagini's troubles there's a chance for someone else to win a starting role.

I think part of the reason it rarely happens is that player vs. Pitcher divide. I think plenty of voters really don't want to give it to a pitcher, even if they are deserving. They would need to obliterate the competition, when maybe in some instances they shouldn't need to. I just think it would be easier if there was a clear separator. This is for pitchers, this is for hitters, this is for both.

It's looking like it. I would've thought there was no way if you asked me a month ago, but now....

There already is a "super" silver slugger award! It's called the Hank Aaron Award. I don't think it has nearly the same recognition as the Cy Young and MVP awards though.

Good point!

C'mon man, his K% was about 16% last year between AA/AAA and was 20% with the Astros in AAA this year. Let's not judge based on 99 PA's on a new team.

Bingo!

He shouldn't even play anymore. He's too good for the sport.

Let's just give him all of the relevant MLB hitting records, put him in the Hall, and call it a day.

Are you sure JD has nothing to do with it?

JD wants to get paid, and Shapiro won't give a guy in his 30's a huge ass contract. He's leaving. I've already prepared for it.

Oh i totally agree, but there is a certain someone here who feels that Vladdy's future at third base hinges on what happens with JD.
