Interesting tidbit from Jim Salisbury, CSNPhilly.com

Jonathan Papelbon pitched a hitless and scoreless inning in front of a big crowd at Bright House Field that included Blue Jays' GM Alex Anthopoulos. (USA Today Images)

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Maybe it was nothing.

But, then again, maybe it was something.

Maybe Alex Anthopoulos, general manager of the Toronto Blue Jays, popped into Bright House Field on Friday afternoon because he enjoys those Delco’s cheesesteaks that they sell behind home plate.

Or maybe he was there to see Jonathan Papelbon.

Whatever the case, it was quite interesting to see Anthopoulos seated in the scouts’ section watching the Phillies play the New York Yankees while his own team was hosting the Detroit Tigers just a few miles away in Dunedin.

Rain began falling in the third inning and Anthopoulos soon vanished. But he was there long enough to see Papelbon have another good spring outing.

The Phillies had Papelbon pitch his scheduled one inning at the start of the game to ensure that he got his work in before the rain. He pitched a scoreless inning, walked one and struck out one. He hit 93 mph on the stadium radar gun. For the spring, he has pitched seven innings and given up five hits and one earned run. He has walked just one and struck out six.

Papelbon smiled when he was told that Anthopoulos was in the house.

“Huh, interesting,” he said, uttering what has become his go-to response for all things trade related.

Papelbon has said all the right things this spring, but last summer made it clear he was eager to be traded to a contending team. Earlier this spring, he said the Blue Jays would interest him if the Phillies were in a position to make a deal with that club.

Sources say the Phillies and Blue Jays had some dialogue about Papelbon this winter. The Blue Jays have some budget constraints and are currently committed to Brett Cecil as their closer. But Anthopoulos’ pop-in to Bright House Field on Friday makes you wonder if the Jays are keeping tabs on Papelbon as a possible option down the road.

read this too. I think AA might be interested, but I think he's more interested in making a mid season move and letting the Phillies pay some salary. It will give them time to see how the kids play out.

Please add Papelbon!

I would be opposed normally but if it means that Castro will be left alone in the minors then go for it. I'd rather have a monetary mistake for 2 years than potentially ruin a player whom could help us for 5+ years. Now if only Navarro could be traded to Arizona for another reviler..

Well If we're taking the Papelbon contract of the Phillies hands, the least they can do is take Navarro.

This is true. I figured it may be worthwhile to hold on to Navarro because I can see Arizona getting desperate down the road. Thinking on it further you're right, if we can move Navarro and have the Phillies eat his contract AA should do it. I'd hope he calls Stewart and see if he ups the ante before pulling the trigger but yea, no-brainer otherwise.

Papelbon + Hamels for....?

Hoffman + Pentecost + Osuna + ???? salary relief

it would probably take more than that, but I think we really need another MLB starter. And a guy like Hamels would be a HUGE boost to our rotation.

I honestly wouldn't do anywhere near that.

Both pitchers are way overpaid to be given that much in assets. Maybe if Hamels was making half and Papelbon a third it would make sense.

I'm holding out hope that he was trolling.

Obviously phillies would have to pitch in alot of the money for salaries if that trade was made.

It's okay, douchebags will be douchebags, I wouldn't mind him, if it costs money, otherwise he can fly.

I would pay money to see him get punched

have them pay all of this year, his option will vest and we will have him next year as well when we also plan on contending with Jose and Edwin in contract years

Phillies can have like Jenkins and DJ Davis, they can also take Estrada and Navarro if they want too. How bout Ricky Romero lol. Used car sales man s*** "cmon Ruben ull look great in this almost new ford pinto."

Not really. Hamels is good value at his salary.

At this point I want Navarro's roster spot more than I want Navarro. That way the Jays can roster Thole if they want to and it's no big deal.

Hoffman is uber talented and doesn't have problems throwing strikes. Hes an alpha dog. He will strike you out on 3 pitches and f*** your girlfriend on the same night. Best arm in the organization.

Glad you know him on such a deeply personal level to be able to make that judgement. Thanks Jonn for your wise insight as usual. Have you considered working in baseball? I hear the Diamondbacks have a few spots open. Seems like a perfect fit.

Trading Hoffman would be f***ing retarded. The guy is going to be our ace in a couple of years.

You've never even see the guy throw a pitch. I'm not in a big rush to see AA trading prospects, but I'd be fine with Hoffman being moved in the right deal.

You don't need to know the guy personally to make an assessment of his talent you douche bag. The guy is flat out electric and intense competitor on the mound. Why don't you read up on him before being a prick. Like I'm the first person on this board to hype up a prospect.

Not taking issue with you hyping up a prospect
