KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 a few more outings like that and he's a lock for the pen If he pitches like that, shouldn't he be in the minors?
Nafro Verified Member Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 I'm going to hold off making any kind of judgment until we have a few more games. Just like I'm not going to declare that Kevin Pillar is going to lead the team in HR's.
tercet Verified Member Posted March 3, 2015 Author Posted March 3, 2015 He should start in the minors..
closetjaysfan Verified Member Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 Holy f*** you guys.... this is spring training. Grapefruit league statistics are pretty meaningless for a pitcher. Calls can be summed up like this: "lets see how your fastball down the pipe looks" "throw that new pitch you have been working on to the same batter 3 times in a row". Is Sanchez going to regress this year? Almost certainly. But can you glean much from this game? Nothing other than Sanchez isnt ready for April yet... just like the rest of the league.
BTS Community Moderator Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 I hope tercet is willing to admit he was wrong about Sanchez. For years all he posted about was how Sanchez is the next Cliff Lee, and now that Sanchez is struggling he'll probably deny it.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 Russell Martin on Sanchez's curveball: “The umpire, it was his first game of the year and (Sanchez) throws a backdoor snapdragon, it kind of froze him a little bit,” Martin said of the pivotal pitch to Polanco. “But he’s got a devastating curveball, the action on it is pretty severe."
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 Sanchez gave up no runs in 6 appearances during ST 2014.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 Keith Law is high on Sanchez. That alone should make it obvious he'll be a reliever at best, nevermind his s***** minor league history.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 I really can't believe that people are freaking out about 1 spring training outing. 1st outing of the year too. Seriously, how many years have you guys been watching/following baseball? Calm the f*** down.
gbill2004 Verified Member Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 So does this mean I shouldn't be drafting Dalton Pompey first overall in my MLB fantasy league?
jays76 Verified Member Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 No Donaldson error and he might've come out unscathed yesterday. I think he needs to stay in the pen though, it'll allow him time to develop and feel comfortable in the majors. Let him do the bullpen where he might've found his niche already and then evolve into a starter a la Jimmy Key as mentioned. If he fails as a SP (which the numbers suggest he might) then I'm sure he'll excel as a RP doing 1-2 innings of high heat plus the dirty curve.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 he needs to develop his curve if he is going to be a started. Not sure if he does that in the pen. I'd prefer MLB or AAA starter, but I'm not confident that will happen.
JFD Old-Timey Member Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 bullpen ace with control issues. can't wait!
glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 If he pitches like that, shouldn't he be in the minors? He should be in the minors regardless. Not sure what the rush is. If he was guaranteed to be an ace reliever, then I could understand the urgency since AA's job is on the line, but dude is just as likely to flame out as a reliever at this point. He really needs more time to work on his repetoire. Wish the Jays were a bit smarter with him. I still predict he'll bomb as a reliever and be sent back down to be stretched out some time in May or June.

flafson Verified Member Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 I don't really see the big deal, the guy was trying to throw quite a few breaking balls which he really didn't do while he was in the bullpen, so obviously he needs more than 1-2 innings to show what he got.
tercet Verified Member Posted March 5, 2015 Author Posted March 5, 2015 Yep obviously his 2014 in the majors is sustainable.. He only lead all relievers in BABIP 157 w/ min of 30 innings lolz

tercet Verified Member Posted March 8, 2015 Author Posted March 8, 2015 Sanchez looked meh vs an AA/AAA Pirates lineup that had 2 mlb hitters. (Polanco, Cervelli).. From what I recall he got one swinging strike, had 3-4 pitches that completely missed the plate.. BUT HE DINT GIVE UP ANY HITS AND HAS 0 ERA LOLZ

tercet Verified Member Posted March 8, 2015 Author Posted March 8, 2015 O noes I lost 5,000 in early February over 2 days at WPT Fallsview @ Niagara falls, in poker cash games, I guess that means I am terrible at pokerrrrrrrrrrrr
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 1 swinging strike is the most important thing in a small sample. yeah the 95 mile an hour 2 seamer that started at the hitter freezing him and road back over to inside edge of the plate for a called strike three doesn't count because it wasn't a swinging strike. Secondly, Sanchez had more than one swinging strike so how important can a stat be when it's not accurate..lol. You must have loved when the Jays traded Henderson alvarez....I don't know why the marlins aren't trading him now..lol
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 1 swinging strike is the most important thing in a small sample. One swinging strike overall or one swinging K?
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 So you don't like what Sanchez provides? I will take weak contact over swinging strikes. Especially if it means the pitcher is using less pitches. Weak contact (I'm assuming) is harder to make a repeatable skill. It also relies on the defense, whereas strikeouts are usually guaranteed outs, unless you have Navarro behind the plate.
Laika Community Moderator Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 What? He absouletely pitched to contact. He use to say that all the time. Only his stuff was so good batters still wiffed. He might have said it, but I really wouldn't call spotting the corners with awesome stuff "pitching to contact".
Gorlak Verified Member Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 Weak contact (I'm assuming) is harder to make a repeatable skill. It also relies on the defense, whereas strikeouts are usually guaranteed outs, unless you have Navarro behind the plate. pitchers with weak contact skills are just more rare, Since it's the result of really good movement on pitches. It's the reason why his ceiling is as an ace, The low HR rate he has always had is indicative that he has that skill.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 I cant even count the number of times Halladay has said that he pitches to contact.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 Pretty sure Stroman's new approach is similar and has said as much in interviews that early groundouts helps him go deeper into games instead of using 100 pitches to go 5-6 innings while striking out more guys. The good thing is that when his sinker is located down in the zone there really isn't much the hitter can do but hit it into the ground anyways which he will happily take in the first few pitches of the AB. When he gets to 2 strikes he is also trying to strike the batter out and has the stuff to do it which helps too.
