Jeff Hoffman is one of the most prized pieces in this organization, which means that your value is very high for me and believe that you will be a great president" "As I appreciate you, I hope you appreciate me in the same way and don't fire me." "I promise to start a diet and reduce my big ass. You are the president and you deserve to have the biggest ass of the whole organization."
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 I don't want to part with anything other than money and or a mid level prospect. The idea of giving up a Hoffman for an executive is ridiculous. There have to be other qualified people who can do the job until 2018.
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Stupid compensation rumours aside, I don't think you can understate the probable positive effect of swapping Beeston for Duquette. Beeston is a dinosaur now and you can see small glimpses everywhere of how his presence and influence is more of a hurdle than a help. Duquette is 13 years younger and is presently a very competent GM, so on the baseball ops side of things there should be a huge improvement. Can we give Beeston any credit for the uniform change and setting in motion the real grass process?

If we're being real, the monetary value of having a good team president between now and 2018 would far exceed to expected monetary value of a piece like Jeff Hoffman. It's more about the established market than anything. Good executives worth millions like Theo Epstein have been "traded" for basically nothing in the past.

I'd like to welcome Dan Duquette to the organization" Duquette: " Thanks Alex. I'm looking forward to being here. But now down to business. You traded me for Jeff Hoffman? Are you stupid? You're fired"
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Can we give Beeston any credit for the uniform change and setting in motion the real grass process? AA talked about secretely wanting to changes the uniforms all the way back to his days under Ricciardi so I'm pretty that was his idea but Beaston being from the era of those uniforms certainly wasn't going to oppose it. As for the turf, that whole issue seemed to gain traction at the State of the Franchise. The first time Beaston said it, it really seemed like empty bluster that he came up with on the spot but since then a lot of progress has been made to turn what initially sounded like mere wishful thinking into a practical reality.

The first Duquette move will be fire AA for trade a huge asset like Hoffman for a guy who could being here for free. Tons of O's FO guys want Dan out right now. Angelo is rising Dan's value talking s***.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 hypothetical if AA does trade Hoffman for Duquette. Does that pretty much wipe all the good that AA has done in this offseason? Does it erase the goodwill he did in acquiring Martin/Saunders/Donaldson? It would for me. It would certainly be pretty f***ing dumb, but I highly doubt that AA has final say in this process, I'd assume it's Beeston's boss, Richard Pelley with possibly Beeston in on the negotiations. A GM doesn't hire a CEO.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 That said, I'm pretty sure AA would have no say in this. This would be ownership making this move. It's like a cashier spearheading the plan to bring in the store manager. Exactly.
Orioles Verified Member Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Jesus this is so stupid. Angelos is just posturing, no way we would trade anything of value. Then you don't get him. This is AL East to AL East more comp. Peter wont let him go for free.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Then you don't get him. This is AL East to AL East more comp. Peter wont let him go for free. S'up?
flafson Verified Member Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Then you don't get him. This is AL East to AL East more comp. Peter wont let him go for free. Welcome aboard. What O's fans don't understand is that there was 1 precedent and this was the compensation: http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=8556&position=P The other thing O's fans miss out on, Blue Jays are in no position to force things, Beeston stays until they find someone else, if it's not now then next year, no big deal. On the other hand, Angelos is in a big jam because his GM doesn't want to work for him but wants to work for his divisional rival, on top of that, it's the middle of the off-season and he has no one to prepare the team.
Orioles Verified Member Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Key points some here are forgetting. 1.4 years left on deal. 2.A.L East to A.L East 3.Dan knows all the Orioles weaknesses 4. Peter Angelos stubron old man So please don't use Theo as past comp. He had 1 year left on deal and the owner had no problem with him going.

Length of contract is meaningless because DD doesn't want to stay there. If DD stays for 4 more years, Angelos is hurting DD and O's, no one else. Owner had no problem with him going, probably because he knew Theo didn't want to stay when he has the chance to get a promotion.
SJE32 Verified Member Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Good then keep a disgruntled employee, They are always essential to a well run organization. Face the facts here, Orioles there is no upside here. If I am the Jays, I offer next to nothing. It maybe more valuable for the Jays to have a pissed Duquette running the O's. Just like the Jays with Farrel, there is no value in holding out.

Peter will make Dan stay he doesn't care.

Irrelevant Funny, normally people are allowed to interview for promotions, like when the O's were allowed to talk to LaCava. Angelos is being a douchebag, and if you honestly think you're getting someone like Stroman you can maybe pull your head out of your ass.

Orioles Verified Member Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Bottom line the timing is flat out awful. You do this after the season not in December.

JPMorosi, said that mlb was applying pressure for the O's to let him go. According to his sources, it has been common practice for a team to let someone go for a promotion, and that they were using the all star game, as a threat/reward to work something out.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Hmm. Imagine if the actual deal is Duquette for LaCava lol

MLB will look very unfavourably on the Orioles should they limit promotion opportunities... The precedent is there in Epstein and Farrell, and the return will be fairly low (Jenkins, Drabek, Davis, maybe Goins if AA is comfortable starting the year with Travis/Izturis).
