DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted June 2, 2014 Posted June 2, 2014 That's a poor decision IMO. as hot as Edwin is, we are talking about an established ace and whats probably going to be a top3 outfielder in the majors for several years. Having said that, obviously you don't trade your top 2 bat in a pennant race. However never take the absolute approach. Two years from now Edwin maybe past his prime, where as Myers will be a top 5 player in the majors You don't trade elite hitting for pitching, ever. Especially since Price would be likely to walk as a UFA. I'd need the insurance of a top prospect otherwise it is not worthwhile.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 I fear that once Colby returns, the Price for EE conversations will heat up. Gose stays where he is, Cabrera and Rasmus man the corners, Bautista to first. That's the kind of thought process that on the surface would make sense (trade a glut to plug a hole) but it would be a bad trade to make.

EE isn't going anywhere without something so absurdly good coming back it wont happen. A bona fide masher who still appears to have upside for $10mm through 2016. David Price for 1.5 years isn't worth that even with Myers, unless we are folding our tent. And in that case we likely wouldn't want Price's salary anyway and we would slowly bring up our arms.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 At this point, EE would command more than just Price. No such deal would ever happen, so it doesn't matter.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 Part of the reason given by AA for going all in was to try to contend while they had Bautista and EE. I don't think EE is going anywhere.

There is no chance in hell that the Blue Jays are going to trade Edwin. Just stop speculating. It's complete nonsense.

You slipped up when you answered the dude's "Georgia Peach" account by referring to him as "Gibbers", bud. Only someone who has been around since the days of the old board would have known his old username. But whatever. New member, right? Lolz Edit: A little late to the party on this one. Cooler Heads Prevail Verified Member Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 People need to stop with this. There is no chance in hell that the Blue Jays are going to trade Edwin. Just stop speculating. It's complete nonsense. There is also no chance in hell we're trading Sanchez AND Stroman, but people keep posting this, it's like the leading trade idea every time. In fact, very little chance we trade Stroman this year for anybody. We have other options on the team and in the system to trade for respectable pitching rentals. The guy I'm wondering about now is Gose, his value as a young controllable player with some potential is going up. Maybe some teams might want him in a package with a cheap pitching depth guys ( eg Redmond, Delebar etc etc ). Not sure if he's done enough yet, but he's entered the discussion. The other over done idea is trading for Cliff Lee. He's an absurdly expensive starter on a ho hum year with a current injury. My opinion, he's basically free for any team wanting to eat his salary, and the Phillies may just decide to eat his salary anyways and keep him.
Andy Verified Member Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 Am I the only one that isn't very high on Price? I think Samardzija or Shields would be a better option. Regardless, trading Edwin for a starter that may or may not sign a deal would be absurd.
Art Vandelay Verified Member Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 The only way you trade Edwin is if you're at the very bottom of the division and you are hoping to rebuild. How did trading him even become a possibility to some people? We're in first place of the division, better trade our best and most popular player.

Aiming for Shields makes much more sense IMO, though I still think it will cost more than we should pay, unless somehow we are able to work out an extension which would likely be near impossible. And Edwin's contract make it him as near close to untradeable as you can get, the guy's not going anywhere
Cooler Heads Prevail Verified Member Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 Am I the only one that isn't very high on Price? I think Samardzija or Shields would be a better option. Regardless, trading Edwin for a starter that may or may not sign a deal would be absurd. Price and Samer are the same issue, good pitchers but will be expensive moving forward. Plus I'm not sure if either are the kind of guaranteed ace for years in the AL East that warrants a big money contract AND giving up any prospect(s) to get them. I agree with you that Price represents the greatest risk of turning into a bad trade. Edwin forget it, we're contenders in 2014 and 2015 and he's a core fan favorite. I don't think Samer will be traded. The Cubs have been bad for 5 years, fans will be getting impatient for better ball, and he's showing enough this season to probably have changed their ideas on keeping him.
Convo Verified Member Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 No, I've never liked Price. Rays pitchers generally get very over-rated. The Rays defense has always been spectacular, but Price, Hellickson, even Moore at times, have never been as good as people made them out to be. Shields on the other hand was severely under-rated, having to pitch in the same rotation as Price. Pretty sure this is why FIP/xFIP/xxFIP exists.

I dont see him wanting to sign a new deal with the Cubs though, so they may not have a choice but to offload him.
Cooler Heads Prevail Verified Member Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 I dont see him wanting to sign a new deal with the Cubs though, so they may not have a choice but to offload him. If that is true, I could see the Cubs trading him for another good ML player not a prospect. My point is the Cubs likely want to be a better team next season, adding prospects might not be their strategy. Give their fans somebody to cheer for. Rays on the other hand yes they likely want prospects, they are going to be rebuilding the minute they lose Price ( weak farm system, no depth on ML roster, fiscals are much weaker then the Cubs ). The Rays have a tough choice, they could keep Price for the remainder of his contract and make one last run in 2015.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 I kind of wonder if a deal with the Rockies for Chacin and Rutledge wouldn't make some sense. Chacin has had decent results outside of Coors (this year aside, although his velocity seems to be returning the last start or two so that might improve now too), and I think he still has 2 arbitration years remaining. Colorado is apparently thinking of moving him to open up a slot for Gray or Butler. He's not a top end pitcher everyone wants, but he should come reasonably cheap and has the ability to put up a ~4 xFIP or lower. Even if he didn't end up pitching well, he probably doesn't cost us anything we'd be crying over.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 i would grab that deal but i suspect the rays would want more
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 i would grab that deal but i suspect the rays would want more Yeah they'd want the pick plus a prospect
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 I personally think the jays need to make a trade for tanaka. I am thinking maybe Kawasaki (straight up) and if the yanks throw in McCann, I might consider parting ways with Kawasaki. *the above is as stupid of a discussion that you guys are having about trading this year's MVP in Edwin. You've gone from funny to annoying pretty quickly And you're obviously a side account for a regular.

Regardless, trading Edwin for a starter that may or may not sign a deal would be absurd. Shields would be a straight up rental for two months. However I would give up Sanchez and a b prospect if it meant that I am making a run at the world series The higher the leaf the riskier Alex should be. We just swept Oakland and Detroit. Who here doesn't want to go to a world series
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 No way am i giving up Sanchez for a rental that we have not intention on signing next season.
admin Site Manager Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 Price is the man. Career high K rate, career low BB rate. Value slightly lowered because of ERA. Will probably be the best pickup in baseball. I'm sure they'll still get a great haul though.
shortstop Verified Member Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 i'd consider Sanchez & b prospect for Shields...perhaps Hoffman's selection lessens the need to retain Sanchez - whose the better prospect assuming both are healthy - Sanchez or Hoffman?
admin Site Manager Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 I'd move Sanchez in any deal. I don't think his value is as high as it was a year ago though.
