Well it does seem as though Samar isn't really on the trade block. Sounds like they would only move him in a massive overpay or if his contract demands are completely unreasonable, eliminating the chance of signing him long term. Nice.

Or that's what the Cubs want you to think! Maybe if nobody is willing to overpay by January they'll lower the price.

It's the right approach to have if you're the Cubs given that they don't have to trade him right now as he's got 2 years of control left. The asking price should drop as time goes by and they are unable to get him to sign an extension that makes sense for them. At the same time, there's always the chance that some GM gives in and meets their asking price in a trade, kind of like the Mets last year. Here's hoping AA learned from last off season.

"2. Toronto Blue Jays | Move: Trade for RHP Jeff Samardzija

Like the Angels, the Blue Jays need another quality starter in between R.A. Dickey and Mark Buehrle. They’d like Brandon Morrow to be healthy or Aaron Sanchez to develop quickly or Drew Hutchinson or Kyle Drabek to return from injuries and perform to their potential. But there's an element of wishful thinking in each case.

The Cubs want Sanchez in an Samardzija deal, but they won’t get him. However, a package of Marcus Stroman, Daniel Norris and Anthony Gose probably gets it done. The Cubs need to keep building with prospects, and if they haven’t been able to sign Samardzija to an extension by now they should consider dealing him while the return is still high."

Too much

I fail to see why giving up that package would be more appealing than giving up Sanchez. Stroman has a much closer timeline and a much better floor than Sanchez and Gose may be garbage but he's the only CF behind Rasmus and the only CF under control for 2015.

I would suspect Bowden just doesn't like Stroman, or thinks he's nothing but a reliever.

I dont think its too much

gose will never be an everyday mlb player

Stroman is ready to perform in the bigs. We could get 100 innings of him the next season.

Steamer

Stroman 1,2 WAR (77 IP)

Samardzija 2,8 WAR (173 IP)

Good point

He is underappreciated by some

Gun to head I think AA trades Sanchez first anyway

Has AA really done nothing yet...pretty sad. I don't want him to make a move just for the sake of making a move, but we need to go in some direction this offseason.

Waaay too much. Just go with Stroman at that point.

The marginal upgrade in WAR for '14 from Stroman to Shark is not worth Sanchez/Stroman +, especially when we begin the inevitable rebuild in around 8 months. If Shark was the difference between making the playoffs or not different story, but this team as currently constructed isn't even really close. Depressing offseason.

No, it's definitely not. Just sign a FA or go with what you have.

I've already given up, to be honest. I'd like to see Drabek, Hutchison and Stroman feature heavily this season, especially after the first couple months when it's undeniable that we are teh suck. I'm actually looking forward to the tear-down, a competent GM could reap a huge haul for the valuable players on our 25-man, and if done right, we might just find ourselves in a better position than we were in before AA lost his mind or was ordered to lose his mind.

A serious answer to your serious question.

The trades over the last couple of seasons that I hate are the Rogers, Happ, Snider and Dickey trades. I'm not going to lie to myself to say that I ever hated the Marlins trade because that's not true.

Right off the bat, had we not done the other trades, we'd have a potential 2-4 win catcher in Yan Gomes (provided we ever gave him the playing time to figure it out). There's also a good chance that we'd be able to easily afford both Price and Samardzija, and if we wanted, I don't see how the prospects we sent for Happ don't get you Kemp. As an alternative, we could have also worked something out for Hamels or Lee. There are several things we could have done this off-season that we couldn't do last year, had we held onto those prospects.

There's no way the Rays trade price within the division. For Hamels or Lee it would take a lot nicer package then D'arnaud and Syndy.

Morrow or Hutchinson one of them should be back next year. Should get a starter from the farm, either Nolin or Stroman. Maybe we best off not gutting the farm for another starter?

I really don't see the need to. If AA can sign Garza, it is definitely better than trading Sanchez/Stroman. Hutch the first call when someone inevitably goes down.

Dickey

Garza

MB

Morrow

Happ/Esmil/Nolin

Stroman addition at AS break

So much depends on Morrow staying healthy and making 25+ starts. If you could substitute the 5 spot with Hutch, and have Happ/Esmil/Nolin/Stroman as depth, with Sanchez still on the farm, it has the potential to keep us in games. I know thats not what people want to hear, but it's realistic. Absolutely need to add one more starter, whether its Garza or Tanaka (ya right).

Which was the last FA starter that the Jays signed?

If ever there was year to do it, it's this one

We really can't afford to trade anything but relievers and maybe one prospect. That might get us an acceptable 2B, but not a quality SP. Free agency makes too much sense.

Hamels and Lee have large contracts, Dickey didn't and was the best in the league. No way Lee or Hamels costs TDA + Synder.

And????? One year Esteban Loaiza was 2nd best.

from espn insider:

Apologies if this is already posted.

Perhaps the Chicago Cubs are not really all that serious about getting rid of Jeff Samardzija, who could well be their Opening Day pitcher if no other team comes up with a trade package that will convince the Cubs to let their ace go.

According to Mark Bowman of MLB.com, when the Atlanta Braves inquired as to the cost of obtaining Samardzija, "the Cubs indicated they would be looking for a return package that included either Jason Heyward or Justin Upton." That was more than the Braves were willing to give up, and probably sets the bar for an asking price that few teams will choose to rise to meet.

I would hope that's an asking price NO team would meet.
