It's not like they made a monumental shift to defense from 2022 to 2023. They traded Teo and Gurriel. That's it The problem is Springer went from 130 wRC+ to 100 wRC+, Kirk the same, Jansen 140 wRC+ to 115, Vlad from 135 to 115, and Varsho came over after 107 wRC with the Dbacks to 85 last year with the Jays. That's a crap ton of bats that fell off and the FO expected (or hoped for) some of them to bounce back this year and they didn't. In fact most of them got worse and even Bo joined them.

How in the world were they supposed to get a top 2 offense in 2024?

I just keep coming back to the simple fact that everything would be much better if the core they'd chosen to build around had lived up to it's potential. IMO Atkins built a good team around a rotten core. A 5-7 WAR Vlad (which we had in 2022) A 4-5 WAR Bo (which we had 2021-2023) A 5-6 WAR catching tandem (which we had in 2023) The big question is why did the core kool-aid turn rotten? Was it an inevitability (IQ levels, physical conditioning, etc) or is it something the Jays did to cause it (coaching, team philosophy, etc)? That question needs to be answered for sure.

Swanson gave up 6 earned runs yesterday a third of an inning. 9 strikes on 19 pitches. Rocking a 16.76 ERA since going to AAA I remember at the start of the year trying to guess which one of last years solid relievers was going to s*** the bed this year, because you knew there would be one for sure. Well, turns out I could have guessed any of Romano, Mayza, Swanson or even Green who's already had two IL stints and is on pace for like 35 IP lol I thought it'd be Richards

Springer batting clean up is absolutely insane and completely indefensible It's like Schneider is begging to be fired and seeing how far he can go before they turf him.

Yeah the one thing we can be grateful for right now is that the Jays didn't extend either Vlad or Bo to monster contracts. Whether by design or by luck, it's very fortunate. Personally I'm ready to see both shipped out and give them and the org a fresh start.

1. Deal KK (he'd be a nice veteran D pick up for a contender), Jansen (if he won't re-sign a fair deal) and Kikuchi (Boras....) for whatever lottery tickets you can get. Should be able to get some more lottery tickets from dealing Yimi and Richards too 2. Look to move Bo and Vlad, hopefully some teams out there thinks they can fix these two duds 3. Reset the luxury tax 4. Play the s*** out of the Buffalo boys and see what you've got, get them some experience to hopefully build off of 5. Build next years rotation around Gausman, Berrios, Bassitt with Y-Rod/Tiedemann/Francis/Macko trying to fill it out along an FA signing or two, maybe Manoah makes it back mid season 6. Also spend the rest of the season seeing if any of the relief arms in AAA/AA have any promise at the MLB level. Cooke, Danner, Juenger, Pardhino, Flaherty, Eisert, Brock, Burnette... 7. Go big game hunting in FA in the off season, see if you can find a better mix 8. Figure out why the f*** the drafting and development is failing and start fixing it

They should have offered Ohtani a billion, and let the Padres take whatever prospects they wanted for 1 year of Soto. THAT would have made a difference for sure. None of the other mid range players would have moved the needle enough to "fix" anything with half our other starters rocking sub .600 OPS's

I dunno if I'd blow up the rotation. I'd certainly be looking to move Vlad and Bo for hopefully a decent return of prospects. Then move forward with the Buffalo Boys and try to land some decent free agents.

Well, it's been about 3 months of me posting my thoughts about this all over this forum ad nauseam, but sure why not do it for the umpteenth time right? I think right now the Jays have about the 25th most runs scored in the league, Let's just say the Jays FO was as smart as you guys with your 100% hindsight and were able to sign Teo and JDM out of the half a dozen or more options everyone was also pining for last off season, like Soler and Gurriel for an example of guys who suck at the plate this year but no one brings up NOW with again...100% hindsight at their disposal. And lets also assume they were able to perform as well here in Toronto as they are on the Dodgers and Mets. And lets not forget that this is assuming they were even willing to sign with the Jays (which we don't know, we can only speculate). Since we're already assuming a whole bunch of other stuff let's just keep assuming that even if they would have signed with the Jays that they would have signed for the same money and term, $35.5 million combined. How much does that improve the offense? (remember we are assuming they are just ripping it up here like they are on the other teams) Probably safe to say we move up to middle of the pack as far as runs scored? So yeah, definitely an improvement. Is it fixed? I guess that depends on your definition of "fixed". I mean, I guess since we assuming so much stuff here you can assume, if you want to, that all the rest of the Jays hitters would just magically be much better hitters just with the mere presence of these two on the roster. But you've spent $35.5 million more than is allowed so we have to remove some of the players they did sign instead. IKF ($7.5) KK ($10.5) JT ($13.0) add up to $31 million. Obviously these perfectly executed hindsight changes would result in a better offense. Is it fixed? Probably not, with guys like Springer, Kirk and Bo still rocking sub .600 OPS's, but what do I know? I'm just an Atkins knob gobbler. It would certainly take away some jam from our defense though, and the only way I know how to compare these things would be fWAR I guess?? JDM + Teo = 3.1 fWAR IKF + KK + JT = 1.4 fWAR So a gain of 1.7 fWAR. Again, assuming the same level of performance in a Jays uni and a willingness to sign here. How did the FO ever miss this great opportunity to "fix" the Jays last off season?
