  1. Hasn't Contreras graded out very well defensively since the trade? Dude is an all around beast

Yes - I think so. At the OMHA level, players are getting suspended for like 8 games for any cursing or swearing on the ice. There is a pretty major crackdown on it and from my seat, the kids have all adjusted pretty well. There is still some chirping (my oldest was U14 last year), but it's certainly not what it used to be - just as fighting isn't what it was when I played U14. I think overall, that's good for the game. I didn't read that article, but I do wonder if "hate speech" was added to grab clicks. I'm pretty sure neutral statements like "you're a f***ing moron" or "*******" carry the same weight as calling someone a "**********".
  3. This all seems like a positive story to me. Jays started the year putting him in situations to succeed and he did, which bought him more rope and he earned a full time starters job. The team also worked with him to fix some holes in his swing (including changes to his stance) and the results are paying off. Recently we've also seen the team make changes to the lineup and give starters a longer leash (in response to poor performances by the pen). This all seems like approaches and moves most should support. Hopefully there are more positives like this moving forward.
  4. This is correct. This may change if the team decides that Turner shouldn't be the everyday DH. At that point, they may want to give Horwitz an extended look. We may be reaching that point, but it shouldn't be hard to see why they didn't start the season there.
  5. I remember this story. Very cool. If I remember correctly, he said Luke Maile was much more influential to him than Russ Martin (when we all thought Russ would be this amazing mentor). Catching at the big league level is hard and most catchers are taught to lock down the defensive side first and the bat will catch up. I think that gives some hope that despite his early success, Kirk shouldn't be written off offensively. Similarly, I do think Gabby Moreno will eventually hit. I think this was said at the time of the trade though - that by the time that happens, it may be past the Jays contention window (and close to when he's approaching free agency). So far, that's held true.
  6. For sure - routine matters to some players. Which kind of sucks for the team, as ideally, you want your best RPers pitching in the most important late inning moments. Years ago, I thought we'd see teams move away from just using their top guys as "closers" and use them when it really mattered (like the Jays are using Yimi). I thought we'd see the save deemphasized, but it hasn't happened to the extent I thought. It may take more time to change the mentality of RPers. Most of the guys in the majors now grew up in a time where the closer pitched the 9th (only).
  7. I still can't believe AA gave up William Contreras
  8. Is Ownership going to let Atkins make long term decisions that could hamstring the future of the team when he's nearing the end of the plank? I'm also not sure extending him at his all-time high is such a great idea - but as was mentioned, perhaps he'd jump at the idea, given how injury prone he's been. Let's not forget that big beautiful bastard is made of annealed glass.
  9. To be fair - they probably expected Kirk to be the catcher of the future when they traded Moreno. At that point, I don't think it was obvious that Jansen was developing into a legit bat that should be DHing in most games he doesn't catch (even though he was great with that bat in 2022). I'm not sure they wanted to give Jansen a 4 year / $60M deal when Kirk was coming off a 129 wRC+, 4.3 WAR all-star season. You wouldn't want to be paying Jansen that to catch 3 days a week.
  10. Back to the bench? God no. Nobody would suggest that. Dude made adjustments and earned his playing time!
  11. The question was whether he's been in a slump before. The answer is yes, yes he has. Spin it however you'd like...
  12. Schneider has played in 39 of 46 games this year. He finished last season like 9 for his last 69 with a 36% K rate. Having him start the season in favorable matchups to see how he'd perform is completely reasonable (especially when Biggio was playing great at the start of the year). Davis earned the extra playing time and has been starting ever since. He's now earned his way up to the top of the lineup. This criticism is unnecessary.
  13. 0 for 35 to end last season isn't a slump? He finished the year like 9 for his last 69 with a 36% K rate. Kudos to DS for making the necessary adjustments, as the league had figured something out on him by the end of last year.
  14. We're 4th last in the AL and have probably been lucky to date - we probably should be 2nd last. We currently project to finish as the 4th worst team in the AL. Yes, only 3.5 games back of the last wildcard spot, but there are several much better teams ahead of us (TB, Rangers, Houston). I'd suggest our chances to make the wildcard is at like 8% right now (Fangraphs says 18% fwiw). We have just under 4 1/2 months of "going through the motions" unfortunately. Reasons to watch: - Can Vlad and/or Bo figure it out - Davis Schneider - Varsho - Danny Jansen - Is Manoah back? - Kikucci/Gausman (just good pitchers - but trade them both please) - Can Nate Pearson figure it out? - minor leaguers - Horwitz, Orelvis, Barger and hopefully some bullpen arms - can they be part of the future Going to be a long year.
  15. Interesting. You do see that when closers "get work" in blowout games, but you'd think in tied or close games he's perform the same as he would in a save situation.
  16. Blah - so he isn't back or fixed. He's probably just getting lucky right now. The stuff "looks" better, but hard to compare since it's been so long since we've seen his A+ slider. Thanks - where do you find that info? I'll bookmark it.
  17. Nice to see some optimism, but it's a major long shot IMO. The team s*** the bed and the season was essentially over by the end of April. Sad but true.
  18. Just checking again - was Manoah's stuff+ the same this game as it's been all year? Is it just the command that's been better?
  19. I haven't been following his usage. Are they trying to use him in situations when the game is on the line (regardless if that's the 7th or the 9th)? You don't support that approach? Prefer pitchers to have set rolls? I've always thought using your best pitchers when it matters the most was the right move, but it certainly seems like some pitchers struggle when they don't have a routine.
  20. Chapman is heating up. Reached safety in 12 straight at bats. wRC+ back to 100
  21. I mean - maybe? I don't think you can assume every pitcher is good at reading bats (batters) or is going to optimize pitch sequencing better than a coach. In fact, I suspect at least 50% wouldn't. What a pitcher will know over a coach in-game is what pitches feel better that particular game. Sometimes you can't quite find the release point on the slider or whatever and those may not be 100% confident in certain pitches or locations that game. I do wonder if coaches can pick up on that from the iPad with spin rates, release points, etc... That said, do I want coaches calling every pitch? Not really - I don't love that. Should catchers be able to do it as good or better than a coach? I think yes, but obviously not all of them will be able to, depending on their age/experience.
  22. I guess when he had a 65 wRC+ in 350 PAs in AAA (0.085 ISO), it was difficult to see he'd eventually be sporting a .240 ISO at the ML level. SF got fooled too. Terrible org, terrible development 😉
  23. The Denver/Minny game was incredible tonight. Those who say the NBA sucks now compared to the good old days are just nuts. The talent, excitement and entertainment is unreal good.
  24. Where are you getting this info Jim? All I've heard is the complete opposite.
