Like we have a shortstop with pop who likes a year away, but no it’s more Gimenez and more slap hitters. It’s annoying .
 

 

Its also coloured (in my case) by the fact that the guys who are supposed to hit the ball out of the park on a regular-ish basis (Vlad, Varsho, Santander) are all nothing burgers this year when it comes to the power output. 

Essentially makes it a slap hitting 3 hit minimum to score 1 run lineup which just doesn't work consistently. Scoring 4+ runs per game long term just doesnt happen without some HR output to carry the run production when babip whims go bad.

It's a classic buy and sell move.  Several teams have successfully done this recently. The moves are focused on building for the next few years, but the new players can also contribute this year and if we get hot, who knows what can happen.

Tigers trade Flaherty to the Dodgers a few years ago and went in a run.  It happens. Low probability,  but it has.

I dont this trade has anything to do with Atkins being a buyer or seller for this season... he saw he has a hole in his rotation for 2027 and 2028 and found a way to fill that hole and its just happened to be at this deadline when a guy they wanted came available.

Cease, Yesavage and Ponce were the only slam dunk rotation arms for next season. He has 4 solid arms now and options like Miles, Stanifer, Bloss, Berrios, and any other off season acquistions to fill the #5 role.

Yeah that's fair. I'm just saying we can do a bit of both.  We don't seem to be selling for a bunch of A ball players.  The guys we got can contribute right now.

Does anyone have an idea of any controllable hitters that we could trade for to slot into our top 4 going forward? Abrams seems like the best name ive seen but would love someone at this level to truly get excited.

I think we have too much money to move and it's prorated over the season so if we need to cut x amount to get under a certain threshold we really need to cut much more than that

If a pitcher you want is available now at a price you are willing to pay then you pull the trigger. It's weird as hell to be so upset that the team chose to get to work on next year's team at the trade deadline instead of waiting for the offseason. What would the prospect cost difference even be? One of the lower level prospects wouldn't have been traded or something?

Everyone always defaults to veterans being great clubhouse guys but they are often the worst offenders.

Omar Vizquel was a crusty old fart that had fallen behind the times and was horrible in the clubhouse. Mark DeRosa's version of veteran leadership was taking Brett Lawrie out for beers.

Yeah to be fair he would be a decent reclamation project. But I do think his attitude issues are more serious than a simple scenery change might fix. He’s constantly getting himself into messy spots for no good reason.

I mean lots of teams have historically scored 800 or so runs without huge power.  1985/87 Cardinals, 1988 Red Sox.  1993 Blue Jays.  

If fact the 2026 Blue Jays will hit about the same number of homers as the 1993 Blue Jays and score 250 less runs.  But if a team could hit .270 with a .350 on base they'd score runs.   

The argument is that you can't hit .270 as a team anymore because of defense, and shifts, and velocity and spin and AI scouting. 

The counter-argument is that you have some outliers with low bad speed that indicate maybe you could.
