Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2025 Posted November 6, 2025 Makes sense. His role has diminished greatly after the past 2 Seasons. He even did an interview during the playoff run where the interviewer asked him what he did. And Don Mattingly literally said not much lol.

mphenhef Verified Member Posted November 6, 2025 Posted November 6, 2025 Mattingly undoubtedly has helped Vlad with his defense at first base and may have contributed to the good clubhouse culture, but I firmly believe going away from his offensive philosophies this year and having each player play to their strengths was a big part of unlocking this team and going on this run. I personally don't feel like this is a big loss and wouldn't be surprised at all if the Jays asked him to leave and let him frame it as walking away. Funky, Stangstag and hanton 3

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2025 Posted November 6, 2025 I wonder if they'll even replace Mattingly. Seems like they just made up a spot for him after bringing Popkins in. Hale is currently the Associate Manager and they could just make him the Bench Coach.

Schneider/Walker/Hale/Popkins seem pretty tight knit.

I'd love that but with all the highly regarded casuals in our fanbase we wouldn't even be able to get through the first series without the crowd starting a We Want Gibby chant after the first pitching change

It happened with Cito Gaston when he came back as hitting coach just 2 years after getting fired as manager. Fired late September 1997, rehired as hitting coach November 1999.

Omar Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2025 Posted November 6, 2025 He belongs in pinstripes. That's where he should end up.

Cito was dealing with racism in baseball and didn’t really get enough credit for his success in Toronto nor opportunities elsewhere (yes in part due to the fact he stopped interviewing as he felt he was the token interviewee)

glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 7, 2025 Posted November 7, 2025 I second the notion that Donnie should go back to the Yankees and work exclusively with their hitters. He deserves it. Olerud363.354 1

Never made the playoffs for his first few years (albeit won 103 games as a new manager), had 3 bad seasons but still survived then was employed for 30 years getting jobs with 5 teams until finally a World Series 30 years after he started. A lot of smoke around Cito regarding handling young players, pitcher workloads, relation with media. Won't rehash it all but maybe reasons other than racism that he didn't get jobs, especially since Dusty did fine with multiple organizations. Spanky__99 1
