I recall that the reasons given to delay Vlad's callup back in 2019 were so that he could work on improving his defense and baserunning. It's now 6 years later and he's still among MLB's least valuable defenders and baserunners. Stangstag and JaysAllMighty 2

Interesting. I also lied, he was nominated twice (2020 and 2021) but never won. GG awards are unfortunately a joke. I wish they'd restore the validity of them. Stangstag 1

Just trade him or be ready to match any offer during free agency. I don't know, it feels like your nitpicking but whatever. I do agree that they should trade him or match any offer. Losing him for a comp pick should not be in the equation. That being said, the market will dictate what he's worth and I'm sure the Jays will be right there. Only time will tell I guess but either way he should have a monster year if he's looking to prove himself Jays24 1

My read is that Vlad is giving very little discount and has done so the entire time, something that Ken is completely ignoring. In hindsight, the team should have just blown the doors off and given him the Devers deal after his 1-WAR season but that would have been insane at the time. But that's kind of what it seems like it would take to get Vlad to sign an extension. Something gargantuan that he might not even get in FA is the only way to get him to extend. Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2025 Posted February 20, 2025 Is there a possible reason for negotiations extending to the last minute. For example, it is possible that Vladdy said he wanted to see who the Jays acquired before making a decision.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2025 Posted February 20, 2025 Should also consider the domino effect this whole Vladdy situation has. Like what would a top FA think of the way this FO handled the Vladdy situation? Would they want to sign here knowing the way this FO operates? Like there is nothing wrong in not being able to work out a deal with Vladdy. That's fine. Though then you need to look at what trade options are available if you know Vladdy isn't signing an extension. You can't just stand pat and stay in limbo, which is something this FO loves to do for some reason. Ken Rosenthal is right. At the end of the day, when it comes to big FA's or even trying to work out an extension for your star, you have to figure out eventually how to seal the deal. Something this FO has done poorly with.
Ryu In My House Verified Member Posted February 20, 2025 Posted February 20, 2025 I dislike the FO for many reasons. But, IMO, if Vladdy was given a fair offer north of $400M, and he refused, f*** him. Trade him now. Big_Walleye 1

I see the metrics and I do readily admit that his OAA and DRS are in the middle of the pack at best. But my take is that he is kinda fat, lazy and overly confident at times and that has affected him immensely since he won his GG. You see it when he makes a good play and shakes his finger no and points to his glove, looking like a douche in the process. But I still see flashes of sheer brilliance in his ability to start dp's from first with a pinpoint accurate arm. I see him make those over the shoulder catches that he makes with ease, when the vast amount of guys at his position have nowhere near the ability he does in that area, I agree that his baserunning is horse bleep, but to refer to his defense in that same regard? That's just outright laughable to me. You don't win a GG by sucking at your defensive poisition There's not really a debate about it. Go to baseball savant and sort OAA for 1b from 2019 through 2024. Vlad is dead last Do the same thing for baserunning value. He's 4th last of all qualified players. He's not middle of the pack in defense or baserunning, he's literally the 1st percentile. Spanky99 1

As their supposed leader, where has he taken them? He says publicly that he wants to remain a Blue Jay, but the "Dude" recently turned down an absolute ****load of money to do so. Without any real negotiating from his side by the sounds of it. At this point the "Dude" is nothing more than a distraction to the team. I trust what my eyes tell me, and that interview to open spring training was an eye-opener to say the least. It's quite clear that this "Dude's" days as a Blue Jay are over. Best to trade him now and remove the distraction. The Mets reportedly showed interest so what better return than Alonso? If the Mets need to add something to balance the deal then so be it. The "Dude" needs to leave. You say something wrong, I show you their career numbers in high leverage Vlad blows him out of the water, you bring up one AB in a NLDS game to respond, than tell someone else about one game, I again show you career numbers and you still comeback with a Facebook reply, okay then. Vlad isn't worth that much, but he's a lot better than an aging Alonso, have at it, "DUDE"!!!

Even if you set a date range of 2021-2024, he still has 3 players ahead of him in WAR at the same position. This idea that Vlad is a "generational" talent needs to f***ing die. A little too early to claim that, he could be if he stays consistent from here on out. Certainly not there yet.
