Matthew Lenz Jays Centre Contributor Posted January 24, 2025 Posted January 24, 2025 It was reported earlier that the Blue Jays were interested in acquiring Astros' reliever Ryan Pressly ($$). Now it's being reported that Pressly, who has a no-trade clause, will not waive for a team on either coast. This effectively eliminates the Blue Jays from acquiring two-time All Star. This news comes roughly a week after losing out on the Tanner Scott sweepstakes and, as of right now, the team hasn't been tied to any other reliever via trade or on the open market. From the perspective of the bullpen, this has been a disappointing offseason for the Jays who had arguably the worst relief corpse in baseball a year ago. While it's encouraging to hear them getting involved in high end relievers, it means very little if they can't close the deal. Who should they target next whether it be via free agency or trade? Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted January 24, 2025 Posted January 24, 2025 It was said that Yates had signed with the Dodgers, but on fangraphs he's still listed as unsigned. I'd love the Jays to get him if he's still available. My next pick would be Carols Estevez.
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 24, 2025 Posted January 24, 2025 Yimi + Hoffman + Sandlin is a decent offseason for the pen already. I am not sure it makes sense to make more big additions there. If they want to dump Pop or Nance there are still a bunch of projected upgrades in the FA pile who will be very cheap. Ryan Borucki for $1M Adam Ottavino for $3M Brooks Raley (TJS rehab, probably back in July) I mean there are lots of guys who can upgrade the last spot or two in the pen. Take your pick. Dozens of names. Funky, Jays24, Terminator and 1 other 4

The Yates signing isn't official by any stretch, from reading between the lines it was a "agreement in principle if......." and they hadn't even formally agreed to those ifs yet. Eat My Shatkins 1
Funky Verified Member Posted January 24, 2025 Posted January 24, 2025 Regarding the bullpen. I think Swanson’s due for a better year. Rough start to the season after his din was hit by a car. Rebounded nicely at the end. Sandlin eats innings and Yimi coming back should help Not having to overuse Green should also help him Grab one more starter and then you can ship Rodriguez to the pen as well. Instead of being a deficit, the pen could end up being a weapon. Spanky99 1

I'm just guessing the Dodgers are trying to make some trades off their 40 man before being able to make this official.

Or they're stuck after the results of the physical. I imagine his shoulder/elbow look like a 90 year old's after he installed drywall on ceilings for 45 years. Blue balls and Spanky99 2
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2025 Posted January 24, 2025 I think I'm happy that Pressly isn't interested. 36, declining (consistently) and expensive. I mean if the Astros ate a lot of the contract and we didn't give up much - sure, but I think we have more pressing needs. Funky 1

Ross might be too snakebit to sign him. Funky and wilko 2

There's even more righties out there, obviously. Orgfiller, BatFlip, Eat My Shatkins and 1 other 4

Yup, there's a whole lot of righties out there. There is definitely no need to force any moves. Any guess what Scott Alexander might sign for? He's coming off a decent season, but he's 35. 1 year at $3-4m?

Yeah it seems like a lot of them will be getting around that. If we are patient, we might be able to get a good deal on a Florida based guy right before pitchers and catchers report. Instead of missing Spring Training to haggle over another million they may not get anyway they could just sign with us and drive over to Dunedin to get ready for the season in the nicest Spring Training facilities in MLB. Like Chafin and Coloumbe from that list as strikeout guys. Hill and Alexander are groundball soft contact specialists, and depending on what our infield looks like might not be the best fit lol. Especially if we intend to give Vlad lots of PT over at the hot corner. Bo and Vlad over on the left side with guys who induce lots of groundballs seems like a disaster waiting to happen, although those guys will primarily be facing lefties anyway. Dale Verified Member Posted January 27, 2025 Posted January 27, 2025 I think the Jays need to get their act together before they go chasing anybody else. FIRST,get Vladdy signed to a multi year contract. He is now going to cost 400 million or more possibly for ten years. The Jays (read Atkins) did this all by themselves by chasing Otahni and Soto (who incidentally were NEVER going to come here in the first place). The Jays (read Atkins) have shown absolutely no loyalty to any player so why would any superstar want to come to Toronto without a sure thing under their belt. And sure thing also means a legitimate shot at a pennant. SECOND. Lets get rid of the source of the Jays problems in the first place. Lose Ross Atkins.

Yes, the Jays should fallen over with their legs in the air and gave Vladdy whatever he wanted while he was busy declining at the plate for three straight years, struggling to control his weight in his early 20's, degrading into one of the worst defensive 1Bs in MLB and constantly making stupid costly mistakes like getting picked off 2nd base as the trail runner (and potential tying run) in an elimination game that officially ended their season with a red hot hitter at the plate. The guy has more red flags than a Chinese communist party parade and some of you act like it was ALWAYS a cut and dry easy decision to just throw hundreds of millions of dollars at him.
