Andy Martino of SNY is reporting that talks between the Blue Jays and Pete Alonso are "advancing", but further states that a deal is "not done yet" and that there is "no guarantee" one will get done.

Alonso, a 30-year-old four-time All-Star, is the top name remaining on the market but hasn't been tied to many teams. In fact, other than the Blue Jays, the New York Mets are the only other team to have been tied to the 1st base slugger. The Mets were said to offer a three-year contract in the $68-70 million range with opt-outs, per Joel Sherman and Dan Martin of The New York Post, which was then declined by Alonso's camp unofficially marking the end of his time in Queens. Around that same time, Will Sammon of The Athletic ($$) said that Alonso and his representatives at the Boras Corporation pitched a similar deal to the Mets but with higher annual salaries.

So if we start putting together multiple reports, it appears that Alonso is open to a short-term deal as long as it includes opt outs and exceeds $23 million per year. How far north of $23 million Alonso and company want has not been made clear to this point, but MLB Trade Rumors suggest that the front loaded $80 million that Cody Bellinger received is the low bar to obtain Alonso's services.

Across six big-league seasons, the righty has proven to be a modern day iron horse having exceeded 152 games played five times and has a 162 game average of 43 home runs and 112 runs batted in.

Given his reliability and skillset, how much are you willing to fork over for Alonso?

I don't understand why the Mets would ever let this happen but I'm on board if it does. I think getting Alonso on a short-term deal is a pretty huge win.

Ya I was making this exact point in the other thread.  Why let Alonso leave for 3/75 but then be interested paying Vladdy 12/450 or whatever it would take.  Getting Alonso for a 4 years or less deal is a friggin home run for any team, let alone the team he's grown with.

I agree on the Mets. I'll believe they let him walk on a 3 year deal when I see it.

That said, Alonso and Vlad aren't all that comparable. They both play 1B but Vlad is a 25 year old projecting for 5 WAR a season. Alonso is a 30 year old projecting for 2.5 WAR.

The higher a player's WAR, the more of a premium you can expect to pay. Getting all that WAR wrapped up in one roster spot is huge and teams pay extra for it.

Maybe it's because I've been scorned by Vlad that if you remove the contract incentive from a fatty that he'll revert to the frustrating guy we've seen for half his tenure here.

Just don't understand from the Mets standpoint but whatever... their stupidity could be our gain.

It has to be because they think they can get and/or sign Vlad?

Yeah only reason the Mets would balk at a short term deal for Alonso would be trying to save money/the position for Vlad next year. Alonso is going to get opt outs in his deal but there's no guarantee he will opt out (see Bellinger), and he's a much tougher player to trade given his profile (lumbering 1B/DH). With that said, I feel that's a rather pointless thing to do for the Mets. They have the richest owner in the sport, so worst case if they sign Alonso for 3 years with opt outs and he doesn't opt out, it's not like Cohen is going to have issues paying Vlad. Maybe Stearns just doesn't like Alonso, or this is all just a game of chicken that Boras is playing (using the Jays) to get the Mets to cave a bit.

The non-Vlad logic for the Mets to walk away from Peter is that they probably think Vientos is a 1B and they don't want to completely clog up 1B and DH. Most teams like to use DH as a flex position these days.

Maybe they let Pete Alonso walk then sign Bregman.

Yeah they might feel that Vientos is so bad at 3B that they HAVE to move him to 1B. His metrics would back that assertion up.

Maybe the Mets are applying the same logic to Vientos that the jays knew about Vlad, that let him focus on hitting and go stand at first base instead of flopping around at 3rd base pretending you can play it.

I have 0 respect for our local guys, especially when it comes to breaking news but it would be crazy for them to say this and then we sign either of them shortly.

Would be cool. But nobody reputable is covering this story. Just don’t understand why the Mets would let Alonso walk at 3/75. Boras wanted 5+ and 100m+. Boras using Jays to force the Mets to come back to the table. If those terms were on the table for the Mets he would be a Met right now.

Just as I expected. Boras trying to use the Jays as leverage.

Shi is full of s***.

This is Atkins playing 4-D chess by feeding his local reporters the BS that the Jays aren't interested in order to help stifle Boras' misinformation. The Mets brass will read Shi's tweet and think Alonso isn't going anywhere.

The Mets are going to be shocked when Passan tweets out "Alonso to the Jays." Cohen will probably fire someone.

Atkins actually using the local media to his advantage to counteract Boras using the Mets media for leverage.

Being embarrassed by Sasaki has changed Ross.

Yep this is exactly what's going on

Im not so sure, there’s tons of people saying they’re hearing Alonso and Jays talk is heating up while 1 guy (who has never broken anything) is saying no.

Not sure I believe Shi here.

Martino is actually credible when it comes to the Mets/Yankees so I wouldn't dismiss what he's saying, but could be info he's getting from Boras (who usually uses Heyman for his media manipulating). The fact that the Jays local media never take the time to squash rumors, even when fans are giddy with unrealistic hope, but are doing so now is interesting.

Ross is tired of being used so now he's countering the Boras media manipulation/leverage attempts.
