This seems like something that could eventually require surgery to correct. Hopefully the cortisone shot allows him to successfully return at some point this season but those always feel like more of a bandaid solution and there's often a price to be paid later.

Laika Community Moderator Posted July 27, 2025 Posted July 27, 2025 Vlad is kind of putting together a vintage Votto/Freeman season. A bit weird for a dude that can hit the ball so hard. But good weird, I guess. Can't complain about any 4 WAR year. Spanky__99 and Stangstag 2

I dunno, a 4 WAR year is weak sauce for a guy with a $500 million price tag, but you can live with it when the rest of the roster is riddled with 2-3+ WAR players and has ZERO passengers. Stangstag 1

I don't think Vlad is ever going to fully live up to the total price tag as the deal is far too long. Having said that a 4 win season isn't that out of line as compared to the average annual $35 million price tag, so I don't see a lot of value in fretting over the total contract value when Vlad is having a pretty decent season despite the lower power output. If a free agency win is valued at around $9 million and Vlad produces a 4 season that's $36 million worth of value and Vlad is earning his salary, just without much in the way of surplus value to mitigate what will likely be an ugly back half of his contract.

With the Jays in 1st place in the entire MLB, I certainly won't be fretting about much of anything. I was one of the more positive guys around when they significantly under achieved the last 2-3 seasons. If Vlad has a 4 WAR season, that's a win in my books, even with his hefty price tag.

Obviously you'd like to see 5-7 WAR seasons, but a 140 wRC+, 4 WAR season is perfectly fine. It's positive to see improved defense from him and we know there will be some 160 wRC+ seasons ahead. If he gets hot, there's a chance this year itself will be 150+ and closer to 5 WAR. Vlad is fine IMO.

Vlad is fine IMO. I have the same line of thinking. I'll fully admit I'm growing weary of the constant barrage of derogatory $500 million man every time Vlad has a bad game or makes a mistake on the field. I too am encouraged by the improvements he's made defensively and on the bases, albeit with the occasional blunder mixed in. I don't think we've seen peak Vlad yet either, as I believe he carries the requisite talent to potentially take over from Aaron Judge as MLB's best hitter once he hits his peak/prime and Judge starts to slow down at the plate. I think if Vlad can finally find a way to lock in the "A" power swing at the plate from day 1 in the season there is MVP potential in this player, but given the inconsistency he's shown from season to season it's far from guaranteed that will ever occur.

If we look at genetics there is some hope too... Vlad sr never really slowed down with the bat until he was 34...and was still above average. He only had one year with an OPS+ under 100 and it was 98 in his age 36 season. If Jr follows the same track...his contract is only bad for maybe 4-5 years?

He was the guy that turned down a pre-arbitration raise because it wasn't high enough. Nothing about Nimmala is any factor on whether Bichette signs or doesnt sign a new deal with the Jays
204Jays Verified Member Posted July 27, 2025 Posted July 27, 2025 What's Bo at his best? A top 8 SS at his worst, middle of the pack? Not saying he would agree with this assessment and probably why a deal wont get done.

My take on why he turned the pre-arb raise was a bit of a mild protest due to his inherent dislike of the system vs an indication that he is chasing max dollars. He's been saying a lot of encouraging things publicly about wanting to remain a Blue Jay long term to finish his career with Vlad, has been much more vocal this season about how much he's enjoying himself, and there was recent chatter about Bo and the team undergoing extension discussions so I wouldn't be terribly surprised if he were willing to sign more of a mutually beneficial extension offer vs attempting to squeeze maximum millions from the organization such as Vlad did. Sure. My thoughts are definitely based on my own interpretations of what he has said publicly in the past. I think these second generation star players just have much more insight into how the business side works, and, an assumption on my part that the father's imparted many examples of players being drastically underpaid, including themselves in some cases... which leads the sons to definitively want to test free agency and squeeze every dollar they can based on how they value themselves. Some projection here on my part for sure, but thats how I see it.
