^...however

imagine if the batter is facing his dugout - the dugout sees the pitch on dugout monitor (same view as us).  They could potentially signal to the batter to ask for a challenge - they would be pretty much instant

No, I'm certain MLB changed that, all devices are delayed in the dugout. That's why there's a video review team that has to use the phone, it isn't possible, like at all.

They better give him the MVP

He's gonna be close to Judge in terms of fWAR anyways, give it to him. He's much better defensively despite Judge's crazy offensive numbers overall.

Judge might make it to 10 fWAR again this year, which would be his 3rd time - 1 more than Trout.  Bonds had 5 (roid aided).

I honestly wouldn't be opposed to have them share the MVP like in 1979 (although of course votes dictate that). Judge's offensive numbers are ungodly and the Yankees would be nowhere without him, but Raleigh is having a historical offensive season for catchers and combining that with plus defense. This is the closest MVP race I've seen.

If Raleigh can pass Judge's AL record it will be too much narrative and Cal will run away with the voting.

I think this is a repeat of Donaldson vs. Trout in 2015 ish. They're close enough in fWAR that falls well within the margin of error to where you can't say one guy is obviously better than the other. Raleigh is doing something historic of his own right and will have the added narrative of driving the Mariners to their first division title in 24 years. What Judge is doing is historic of course, but he has the unfortunate negative of we've seen it before...from himself.

I can't say bias isn't clouding my judgement. If Judge played for like, the Guardians or Tigers, I might be more inclined to say he deserves itBut right now it's a true toss up more or less, and one guy will have a stronger, pretty deserved narrative. Raleigh is putting up one of the best catcher seasons ever, not even the pre-integration (not counting Josh Gibson) or steroid era guys put up numbers like this at the catching position.

Ah, okay. Thanks, I missed this post.

Gonna have to watch out that teams don't find a way to "Houston Astro" this.

we know they have access to the system since they can review PAs on those Ipads in the dugout, it's just a matter of how quick they get it. I very much doubt it's in real time.

So if the Red Sox lose tomorrow then they guarantee themselves a series against one of the central teams instead of the Yankees? Is that right?

Looks to me like they're going to do everything they can to not win tomorrow.

The Tigers surely are not going to pitch Skubal with the playoff spot locked up.

It doesn't even matter if they can still win the division, with no first-round bye on the line, you'd rather risk losing the division and having Skubal pitch in what you know will be a wild card series for you. There's just not enough benefit to him pitching tomorrow when you have a series starting Tuesday.

Yeah

Very different situation for them with Skubal vs Jays with Gausman

They can't win a bye to the ALDS. They're stuck paying a Wildcard series even if they hang in to win the division

TBH the Tigers are probably just relieved they hung in to make the post season at all at this point

OTOH the Guardians aren't quite guaranteed anything

Cheering for the Reds pretty hard. It would be hilarious if the Mets don't make the playoffs.

I don't know if I find it pretty easy to cheer for the Reds, especially if it means the Mets  suffer the indignity of one of the more humiliating meltdowns in Major League baseball history.

Theirs wasn't as sudden as the Tigers. More of a slow, agonizing burn. But at least Detroit made it to the postseason.

Yeah, to have fallen completely out of the postseason would have been a collapse that might have stood for the rest of time.

MLB wants a Yankees/Red Sox series at some point. Obviously an ALDS or ALCS would be more profitable for them than a WC matchup.

Regardless, tough to know in-game which seed each team gets with all the games starting at 3:05 PM today.
