Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 7, 2024 Posted August 7, 2024 Go with Clemente at third, Joey in left. Spend the money on pitching. Plus a DH. This plan makes sense to me but unless Loperfido or Barger end the season on fire I think we need another OF bat. There are tons of them on the market this year too. Tier 1- not happening Soto Tier 2- will take a multi-year deal Bellinger Teoscar Santander O'Neill Tier 3- one or two year deal Conforto (boring but would actually fit) Verdugo (yuck) Bader (not what we need) Kepler (would also fit but never healthy) Winker (too risky) Profar (too risky)
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 7, 2024 Posted August 7, 2024 Man - someone is going to give Profar a multi-year deal after this season. I'm so curious to see who it is and to see if he can even come close to repeating the season he's currently having. I strongly suspect he can't. Best $1M signing in MLB history perhaps. Winker is also a DH. Hitting better, but nowhere near the power he once had. Wouldn't touch him.
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted August 7, 2024 Posted August 7, 2024 Teo on contract talks with Boston leading up to him signing with the Dodgers, surprisingly honest:

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 7, 2024 Posted August 7, 2024 I think Bellinger is unlikely to opt out as he really hasn't been able to recreate his 2023 level of success. Yeah that is definitely possible. Opting in is the equivalent of signing a one year $27M deal, with a player option for 25 mil tacked on. Could he do better than that?

If he hits his ROS projections he'll end up right around 2 FWAR for the season. I think he'd be really hard pressed to even come anywhere close to matching the type of deal he's already signed to.
PitaBaby Verified Member Posted August 7, 2024 Posted August 7, 2024 Shapiro just basically confirmed that Atkins will be back next year. "We need to continue to learn and improve" Huh. It's been, what, 10 years now?
AMS528 Verified Member Posted August 7, 2024 Posted August 7, 2024 Here is Blake Murphy's thread to follow regarding Shapiro's remarks. A few bits so far: Shapiro on Atkins: "I very rarely am unequivocal about anything. Commenting on job status during the season, is not something I've done or will do...That being said, contextually, I'm a big believer in continuity and stability and think those are competitive advantages." "We've done a good job developing position players. Where we've fallen short is identifying and developing pitching." Shapiro says evaluating amateur performance has to be contextual (where they picked, slot, etc) AHEM BNS That definitely does feel like Atkins is back although I would not expect him to say anything too strong while the season is still going. It is I think a real stretch to say the team has done a good job developing position players. They've been ok at best. Of the Bisons, Schneider has fallen off significantly and always appeared like a pretty precarious profile. Clement is maybe a borderline starter and is already 28. Horwitz might have a shot if he sticks at 2B. Jimenez and Barger have not shown much yet.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted August 7, 2024 Posted August 7, 2024 At least some acknowledgement that they have failed on amateur scouting and development. I wish we never lost Cherrington and Sanders.
AMS528 Verified Member Posted August 7, 2024 Posted August 7, 2024 On Vlad/Bo: "I'm not gonna comment on those guys specifically but it's certainly easier to build a championship-calibre team with talent like that in place." On a fan turnout question: "It's important to get better and win." Has Shapiro noticed a fan response: "Yeah. When you lose, your sales are impacted...There's a direct correlation between winning and fans coming out to the ballpark." Any impact of 2024 $ on 2025 spending would be "minimal" given recent Rogers spending track record. Couple more, and the last one was his last comment. I wouldn't think Rogers would close the tap at this point, make no sense to do that.

If he hasn't committed beyond that, then allowing a lame duck team president to appoint a new GM would be a bad decision by Rogers. At this rate it's probably better to just let Atkins have one more season, and if it fails, then dump both of them and start the rebuild/retool/whatever with new people. Unfortunately, this probably means John Schneider sticks around too. At this point I'd be pretty surprised if Vlad doesn't go to free agency. I can't imagine Shapiro if he has one foot out the door is going to prioritize giving him a 10-12 year deal, or whatever it will take to sign him. The focus will be entirely on maximizing 2025 wins.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted August 7, 2024 Posted August 7, 2024 Teo on contract talks with Boston leading up to him signing with the Dodgers, surprisingly honest: Seems to me Teo could have been back with the Jays for about 3/40. He pretty much confirms the 3rd year would have had him signing with Boston.

Further to that, what would be your chances of acquiring or attracting a top-tier candidate as GM knowing full well that his boss could be gone within a year? Maybe they renew Shapiro and give him another three years on top of the one he has so that he can close out the decade? Just felt a chill down my spine.
Barrelsandbombs Verified Member Posted August 8, 2024 Posted August 8, 2024 From Shi Davidi If the Blue Jays truly believed “that there's enough talent in place to build a contending championship-calibre team next year,” as Shapiro said, why the equivocation on approach next year? If stability and continuity are such bedrock principles, why not kill the speculation around Atkins and make clear to both the organization and the fanbase that he’s still in charge? If the “greater focus for us is what can we learn” from the struggles this season, isn’t that cause to bring in someone with an outside perspective to help find some answers? All of that points to a team far more unsettled than it would seem, one facing an immense amount of organization-wide work to be a legitimate contender next year, one lacking an order of operations for where to begin. https://www.sportsnet.ca/mlb/article/unsettled-blue-jays-facing-many-issues-including-where-to-begin/

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2024 Posted August 8, 2024 You gotta be kidding me... Please end the Shatkins era as soon as the last pitch is thrown. These guys are not it but Rogers seems to be too stupid to figure it out. Shapiro must be the best con man in the business if he's still selling false hope to ownership.

Also a new GM would have to try to win with another GM’s core (coming off a last place finish) on a one year window. No chance a top candidate takes this job. Maybe the job becomes more attractive after 2025 if/when they concede to a bit of a retool/rebuild. Of course they could also squeak into a playoff spot and we have Shatkins for another half decade.
