Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted May 16, 2024 Posted May 16, 2024 Watching the replay damn that ball JUST got out. The power of pulling the ball… if only our team didn’t f***ing hit to CF so damn much
Steeljays Verified Member Posted May 16, 2024 Posted May 16, 2024 Make Garcia the closer tired of Romano. Even when romano manages to save a game it's usually a nail biter. Exactly. Sell high (sort of)
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted May 16, 2024 Posted May 16, 2024 did Rutschman turn on that ball or what
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted May 16, 2024 Posted May 16, 2024 We'll see who has last laugh.lol Romano has been a good closer three years in a row so you’ve already been proven wrong no matter what he does this year lol
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted May 16, 2024 Posted May 16, 2024 The Jays bullpen right now isn't an elite or shutdown BP as it was last season. Going to be tough to win games of 3-2 or 2-1 with the way the bullpen has been going. Romano hasn't looked 100% this season. Swanson same. Green is on the IL (not surprised). The bullpen overall has been one of the worst in baseball in 2024. Very impressed with Yimi Garcia. Has been rock solid this season. Not sure if he could keep up that level all season but let's hope. Hopefully when Rodríguez comes back he's used in the BP and he turns out to be an electric late inning arm for the Jays.
Steeljays Verified Member Posted May 16, 2024 Posted May 16, 2024 Romano has been a good closer three years in a row so you’ve already been proven wrong no matter what he does this year lol What I said initially was that I have never viewed Romano as a true closer. And I still do not.
mphenhef Verified Member Posted May 16, 2024 Posted May 16, 2024 Make Garcia the closer tired of Romano. Even when romano manages to save a game it's usually a nail biter. I think Garcia has more value in the current role he is in. He's facing the best hitters in the other lineup or high leverage situations regardless of if it is the ninth or not.
mphenhef Verified Member Posted May 16, 2024 Posted May 16, 2024 Mike Wilner "Romano has a higher save percentage than Mariano Rivera" Mike Wilner "Romano blows his first save of the season. He'll blow another couple when all is said and done but c'mon folks, even the best (and Romero is one of the best) blow 3 or 4 a year" Mike Wilner "As good as 2015 Osuna and doesn't beat his girlfriend" (note: Wilner didn't really say the last one, has said something very close to the first two when the negative Nancie's complain about Romano) He hasn't looked great this season and has somewhat lucked his way into not blowing one so far, but there are far too many Jays fans who think closers never fail and always have clean innings when that is simply not true even for the elite guys.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted May 16, 2024 Posted May 16, 2024 What I said initially was that I have never viewed Romano as a true closer. And I still do not. Well he has 3 years in a row of being very good at it. So whatever “true closer” means you’ve been proven wrong.

Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted May 16, 2024 Posted May 16, 2024 Romano has proven to be one of the most reliable closers in MLB over the last 3 seasons, so frankly it doesn't f***ing matter what anyone "views" him as, he is a f***ing closer. That's like saying "I've never really viewed the sky as blue" Oh really? Well I've got news for ya bud, the sky is literally blue. It's really that simple. Even the best closers in history lost a game now and then, it's inevitable.

So that we can trade him. Because this season is f***ing over.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted May 16, 2024 Posted May 16, 2024 Romano is rule 5 found money. But he is 31 now and costs $8M ARO likely to go up in arb. Maybe some decline ^. He has been rock solid for us and is a nice piece for team looking to add a leverage arm for a run. Much like we picked up Hicks last deadline and we know what he cost.

I am not backing down from view of Romano. 😀. I was never "arguing" ( I know some on this board strive for that), Simply stating what my belief of Romano is. This team needs a major shakeup and at this point from the bullpen aspect, I would reverse Garcia and Romano. I don't care about player feelings. This coaching staff doesn't have the balls. It took weeks for them to move Bo the 6 spot. I had been saying that by end of April. Yes a major shakeup. At this point we're not that much better than ChiSox or Marlins

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted May 16, 2024 Posted May 16, 2024 Remember Miguel Batista as a closer in 2005? His entrance music out of the bullpen was Gangsta's Paradise haha.

He's also 31 right now as well. To expect him to keep pitching at those levels and results moving forward...

What a season, Kevin f***ing Mench ending Doc's Cy Young season, Josh Towers forgetting that he's Josh Towers and becoming our de facto ace. And who can forget Chacin coming out of nowhere to give us 200 innings and then both of those scrubs falling off the face of the planet. Still far more entertaining than what we're watching this year.

Towers became their ace and actually was great that summer! Chacin was solid as well. Ted Lilly sucked in 2005 haha. Dave Bush was meh. Offensively the team wasn't that great in 2005. Still a fun team to watch though. I went to a lot of games that season at the Dome. Both Cat and Towers were my favourite players. Wonder how many more games they could have won with a healthy Halladay and if Lilly wasn't as bad. The offseason following the 2005 season, JPR made some big splashes. Improved the lineup by acquiring Troy Glaus, Lyle Overbay and Bengie Molina. Sucked they had to trade O-Dog though. Went out and signed BJ Ryan and AJ Burnett, two of the best FA arms that offseason.

I don't remember if it was that season but I recall a match up between Josh Towers and Miguel Tejada with a runner on third and less than two outs with Towers trying to get the strike out. Tejada managed to get one in the air and drive the runner home, Josh was upset not to have struck him out and Tejada noticed Josh was upset and was insulted that Towers had the audacity to think that he should have struck him out and verbally ripped him a new hole on the way back to the dugout lol. In fairness it was pretty audacious for Towers to think he should be striking out Tejada in a run producing situation.

I didn't care for JPR but he had a tall order in the AL East. Guy didn't have the payroll relative to todays Jays - and the wildcard era has changed the whole approach to the season and deadline for most teams.

Guy didn't have the payroll relative to todays Jays - and the wildcard era has changed the whole approach to the season and deadline for most teams. Yeah I wasn't a huge fan of JPR at the time but after looking back, he did have a really tall order in the AL East at the time with both the Yankees and Red Sox dominating and outspending everyone. Revisionist history, he wasn't that bad of a GM. Drafting and player development still was meh though. The Jays never had the payroll they do today and like you said with the wildcard era changing, I'm sure their approach during the offseason and at the deadline would have been different for some of those seasons. Some JPR teams would have made the Postseason IMO.

Never was annoying as Manoah or Stroman though. I think even in 2005 at the end of August, he had a beef with Casey Blake. He was saying post-game he should have got Casey Blake out since he was hitting only .200, and Casey Blake responded back after lol. As well, he was one of the few pitchers who beamed A-Rod after what he did. Should have been Brandon League with his 100mph fastball instead of the 88mph Josh Towers fastball haha.

You enjoying that Towers jersey I gave you?

You know when I look back at it, winning does give me a natural bias affinity to those players. The 1987 young team through to 1993. 2015-16 and those in charge at the time those eras. Was the same for Expos. I remember watching Tim Raines first ever game, playing 2B. Vlad Sr coming up. Blue Monday almost killed me. I remember after that loss walking to a high school dance that night in depressed stupor. Steve Rogers. Guy was a stud - deserved better. Then the '94 strike that buried us. What a team that was. Moises and Felipe. I can coast on those iconic moments when they go our way through a lot of lean times.

Jays were a juggernaut at the time, no-one can change that. Gillick's my man is all, he brought over a decade of exciting ball. ETA; The AL East will always be a tall order. 2015/2016 weren't 85-93 Jays. I was 10 years old through '83 and on getting Dominion tickets to the bleachers every weekend man, I collected beer bottles and cans every Saturday and Sunday with my pops walking my first dog at the time, just to have weekend tickets every homestand, it was my glory, lol.
