Everything Atkins does either SUCKS or feels like it sucks until you drink the kool-aid and convince yourself that it did not suck. Which, to his credit, sometimes the kool-aid is right.

 

Turner - sucks. no kool-aid.

IKF - feels sucky. but the kool-aid is right.

Varsho trade - feels sucky, trading #1 prospect for .220 hitter, but maybe the kool-aid is right because Moreno is meh.

Teoscar trade - feels sucky, kool-aid tasted okay last year, then Swanson retired to AAA and it doesn't taste as good but wait Adam Macko kool-aid is coming!

Springer - The inverse Atkins. Exciting and feels good at first, but the kool-aid is rancid.

Bassitt trade - feels sucky. innings-eater kool-aid takes the edge off though.

Berrios trade/extension - feels sucky, then kool-aid of innings eating helps, then he gets hammered because he's an SP4 and it feels sucky again

Kikuchi - feels sucky, did suck, then he made his own kool-aid

 

 

One of the only things he has done that just seemed good right away and has been great was the Gausman signing.

 

Everything else is either ick or feels ick at times.

 

Just a bunch of f***ing icks.

 

 

 

I just keep coming back to the simple fact that everything would be much better if the core they'd chosen to build around had lived up to it's potential.

 

IMO Atkins built a good team around a rotten core.

 

A 5-7 WAR Vlad (which we had in 2022)

A 4-5 WAR Bo (which we had 2021-2023)

A 5-6 WAR catching tandem (which we had in 2023)

 

The big question is why did the core kool-aid turn rotten? Was it an inevitability (IQ levels, physical conditioning, etc) or is it something the Jays did to cause it (coaching, team philosophy, etc)?

 

That question needs to be answered for sure.

Take a time machine back to late 2019. Two things would be apparent.

 

1. There was a cheating scandal, stealing signs was helpful

2. Guys were still (and still are) getting suspended for PEDs.

 

Logically it will be helpful to know what pitch is coming and be more alert and stronger. You need to find ways to achieve this without getting disciplinary suspensions

 

1. Do bad things but don't get caught.

2. Figure out hacks to get the same effect legally.

 

As fans we have no idea what is actually happening behind the scenes to enhance performance. Some teams know what is happening on these fronts, the Jays are not one of them.

Yeah they made a deal with Swiss Chalet to get out of Ontario and that Swiss Chalet would stay out of Quebec.
