wilko Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2024 Posted December 18, 2024 Meh, Bellinger has the biggest pumpkin risk of the group. He was already worse than both, defense has been declining, exit velos cratering. Shortest commitment helps but the likeliest of the group to just provide negative value straight up. I have more faith in Santander and Teo to be boring 2 WAR guys with big power and bad defense throughout the duration of most of their contracts. Sign Alonso and Santander. Make homers great again!
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2024 Posted December 18, 2024 Wonder when other teams will say that about the Jays. I'd get it if we were rebuilding but we were supposed to be in a contending window the past few years lol.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2024 Posted December 18, 2024 Factoring in defense, Belly > Santander or Teo They need power dude?
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2024 Posted December 18, 2024 Would you take on that contract for Belly? They likely offered some Buffalo Boys and less money, they can have him, he suxxxx at that $$$ Yes, I think I'd absolutely take on that contract (given that it's 2 years left). He's an above average bat and an above average outfielder, and we need both of those things right now. Which would you rather do, pay 4 of 5 years for one of the two FA outfielders, the last 2 years of which they're likely declining, or 2 prime years of Bellinger for the same AAV? They all likely produce roughly the same WAR.

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2024 Posted December 18, 2024 Well, the Jays struckout and I'm glad he isn't a Jay... Woof!!! Only happy if we find a good alternative. If we strike out like last year, fans will be crying about that missed opportunity. We'll see what the great minds of Shatkins have in store lol

Laika Community Moderator Posted December 18, 2024 Posted December 18, 2024 Bellinger's last four season xwOBAs are .281 .278 .327 .305 he is *very close* to Andres Gimenez with the stick and he is like 20 runs worse on defense so yeah he's not really an offensive addition. just more of a very league average player in every way.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2024 Posted December 18, 2024 They need power dude? A Win is a Win, dude? Or have you gone anti-sabr

Basically Dalton Varsho with less defence.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2024 Posted December 18, 2024 Feinsand says Arenado blocked a trade to the Astros. That's wild... 0 state tax and a winning franchise, wtf is wrong with him. Does he think he's still great? Lol
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2024 Posted December 18, 2024 Basically Dalton Varsho with less defence. Stop it... Ballinger is MUCH better offensively than Varsho and it's not even close lol.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 18, 2024 Posted December 18, 2024 Feinsand says Arenado blocked a trade to the Astros. Wow So yeah we never had a chance to get him either
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 18, 2024 Posted December 18, 2024 That's wild... 0 state tax and a winning franchise, wtf is wrong with him. Does he think he's still great? Lol Yeah he's turning 34 in April, is probably no better than a 3 WAR player now with most of it from defense. And is owed 52M over the next 3 years. Plus how much does it cost to ship 10 gold gloves? They're prob fairly heavy....
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2024 Posted December 18, 2024 Arenado was never going to waive his NTC to play in Toronto, but kinda surprised he said no to the Astros. He must have only a few specific teams in mind. I think it's becoming increasingly likely that the Jays 3B next season is going to come internally (Clement, Barger, Orelvis, Vlad occasionally). Maybe they do a buy low deal with Moncada but otherwise I don't see many options. The only Gimenez type of deal (where there's an overpaid 3B that another team would be looking to dump) that I can think of is Ke'Bryan Hayes, which fits Atkins' MO (controllable, great defense, s***** offense) but I'm assuming even Atkins would draw a line on how many defense-first players he can have at a time.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2024 Posted December 18, 2024 Stop it... Ballinger is MUCH better offensively than Varsho and it's not even close lol. In 2024 Bellinger was approximately 10% better than Varsho last season so they aren't THAT far apart. Go back over the last 5 seasons and Bellinger has averaged 100 wRC+ vs 96 wRC+ for Varsho.

I haven't heard a peep about Bregman this offseason aside from turning down an offer from the Astros. Given their inability to replace him with someone else an eventual reunion feels to be the most likely outcome.

That MVP Bellinger season will always be hard to forget lol.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2024 Posted December 18, 2024 Wow So yeah we never had a chance to get him either Yeah exactly. Can cross that one off the offseason wishlist

Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2024 Posted December 18, 2024 A Win is a Win, dude? Or have you gone anti-sabr Have you looked at the fWAR from Belli and Teoscar lately? Also Belli's defense seemingly has disappeared overnight, steep decline, he's garbage.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2024 Posted December 18, 2024 They traded for Parades. He's been replaced It doesn't particularly appear as though the Astros plan to use Paredes at third base if they are attempting to trade for Arenado.

I just assumed they tried to trade for Arenado prior to the Tucker trade. I don't know where else they'd plan to use Parades 2B and SS are covered, as is DH and he's hardly played any 1B in his career. And it's not like he's an incompetent at 3B Edited December 18, 2024 by Eat My Shatkins
