BTS Community Moderator Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 Kind of weird that Atlanta turned down his 8M option. Maybe Murphy isn't very happy about his lack of playing time?

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 First Angels move this offseason that's made sense. O'Hoppe and d'Arnaud is a solid tandem behind the plate, and 2/12 is relatively peanuts for a solid veteran catcher.

Torono should actually be involved in the market for Higashioka and Jansen I think. We should be looking at a timeshare between Kirk and someone else, and that someone else needs to be better than Serven.
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 Can't believe d'arnaud is almost 36 Makes me feel old

I can't imagine backup catcher is high on the priority list.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2024 Posted November 13, 2024 I doubt Jansen signs anywhere to be a backup, unless he has absolutely zero market as a starter, which I guess is possible but would be a bit surprising.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2024 Posted November 13, 2024 What's a desktop? He’s alive! Was hoping you were okay since I haven’t seen you around since November 5th (NFL trade deadline day). Might be time for a new avatar though.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2024 Posted November 13, 2024 I doubt Jansen signs anywhere to be a backup, unless he has absolutely zero market as a starter, which I guess is possible but would be a bit surprising. Jansen has played over 100 games in his career once in his rookie season, this year's 94 was his highest since. It also came with a significant drop in offensive performance including a big power drop, and he's been seeing a steady drop in defensive performance for some time now as well - he's elite at blocking and bad at everything else. He will also be 30 on Opening Day, but in catcher years that's not that bad, he just will very likely be out of his prime. I love Danny, would like to have him back for cheap, but I think his market won't look the best. Even when his performance has been good his availability is a major concern in what's already the most physically demanding position. He honestly should consider a one year bounceback contract with an opt-out/player option for year #2 that guarantees him at least a 50% share of the load, which is the most he's likely to play anyway regardless.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2024 Posted November 13, 2024 Let's be honest - Tyler Heineman is probably starting 50+ games next year guys. I mean there's a chance we sign some old vet catcher for $1M-$2M, but I can't see much of the remaining budget being spent behind the plate.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2024 Posted November 13, 2024 Brian Serven might be the worst professional athlete to ever take the field, court, rink, etc. The fact that he gets cups of coffee in the big leagues tells you all you need to know about how hard the catching position is.
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 13, 2024 Posted November 13, 2024 I think a good catching tandem wouldn't be a poor use of resources. Someone like Kyle Higashioka probably signs for like 2/10 and would be like a 2-win upgrade on replacement-level level retreads, not to mention whatever bump Kirk would see by having someone to spell him 60-70 games a year. I'd rather have him than Jordan Romano next year, all things considered.

A 5 million dollar investment might give you a nice bump in WAR that you couldn't get otherwise. At a minimum, I would like to see a couple mil thrown at a Reese McGuire type. He can kind of hit righties at least.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2024 Posted November 13, 2024 Yasmani Grandal please! Hell no. Dude is a dumpster fire
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2024 Posted November 13, 2024 Hell no. Dude is a dumpster fire Defensively, he's still very solid and posted a 1.4 fWAR in 72 games last season. As a backup who plays 30-40% in a timeshare with Kirk, wouldn't complain. If you could sign him for something under $5M on a one-year deal, worth looking into and a cheap way at adding extra WAR.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2024 Posted November 13, 2024 Carson Kelly for backup catcher
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2024 Posted November 13, 2024 Carson Kelly for backup catcher He's not a bad option as well. 1.8 WAR last season and has some pop.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2024 Posted November 13, 2024 He's not a bad option as well. 1.8 WAR last season and has some pop. Still fairly youngish (30) and has a very solid five year track record of defensive results, which should be probably the biggest consideration for a backup catcher

Would definitely sign him in a heartbeat if he signed for under $5M.

Conveniently ignoring his atrocious 2022 and 2023 seasons. Plus his reported terrible attitude.
