John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2024 Author Posted August 22, 2024 The Orioles big trade deadline acquisitions: Gregory Soto - generally sucks and has an ERA over 15 with Baltimore Trevor Rogers - got nuked and optioned to AAA Zach Eflin - on the IL with a shoulder injury Eloy Jimenez - replacement level through 16 games This team is not serious about winning Pipeline? Check. Willingness to supplement with actual impact talent? Doesn't seem so. Willingness to spend on top tier FA to supplement? TBD Old ownership was a hell no on both the 2nd and 3rd questions. New guys traded for Burnes and that's about it, a good acquisition but that wasn't even really a supplement to a great staff, it was because they didn't have anyone even in the same talent realm as Grayson. Will be a shame when they're out in the second round again this year
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 22, 2024 Posted August 22, 2024 They did swing a bid trade for Corbin Burnes and that has worked. Eflin is an impact talent. Too bad he got hurt. I did not understand the Jimenez trade much for them. The Trevor Rogers trade was lame.

Will be a shame when they're out in the second round again this year Burnes only a "good" acquisition? I bet if the Jays acquired Burnes last offseason, you would be salivating and kissing the floor Atkins walks on lol. Orioles actually have a decent rotation. It's wasn't an expensive or aging one like the Jays entering the 2024 season. Included Grayson Rodriguez, Kyle Bradish (3.8 fWAR last season), Dean Kramer (decent back-end of the rotation guy), and Albert Suárez has been a nice find (approaching 2 fWAR this season). Let's compare that with the Jays current group this season? Burnes was definitely a great addition who solidified their rotation, and gave them a true No. 1 starter. As for the trade deadline, Eflin was a great addition, though sucks he landed on the IL. Rogers has sucked for them but he was brought in just for depth/back-end of the rotation. He's not pitching in the ALDS or ALCS at all as a starter anyways lol. He did post a 4.3 fWAR in 2021 so maybe they thought a change of scenery could make a difference. As for Eloy Jimenez, that was puzzling but I guess they thought if he got out of Chicago, maybe he recaptures that magic with the bat in his first two years up in the Majors. Would have went after a better bat if one was available.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2024 Posted August 22, 2024 Yes, and ...who cares if it's first ballot or not. The only reason people attach meaning to first ballot is because of the idiotic rules of HoF voting Yeah just asking a question for some baseball discussion, chill. Sure it would be cool to see Votto get on the first ballot! If he doesn't, he likely gets on in his second or third year. But yeah he's a no doubt Hall of Famer regardless.

Yeah the rest aren't anything special. Rogers and Soto likely were just for depth. I doubt Rogers pitches in an ALDS or ALCS game unless two or more of their arms are on the IL. They could have got a better bat than Eloy. Don't really understand that trade.

I haven't seen JH being some overzealous homer anywhere, and here you are claiming that he's some 80 IQ fan who worships the Jays' front office for no reason. It completely invalidates the rest of your post. Nobody is comparing the Orioles to the Blue Jays, only you are. And then you're the first one complaining when people do try to make a comparison. It's exhausting and unreadable garbage that provides nothing in the way of discussion. I'm sure you'll reply with some strawman argument about me being an ardent Ross Atkins defender. That's your entire personality these days.

Zach Eflin is a very good SP3 or good SP2 that you're comfortable starting games in the playoffs. Let's not overstate his contributions. Zach Eflin posted a 4.9 fWAR season last year at the age of 29, pretty similar to Gausman. Yes he has regressed a bit this season, but sure I still consider him a front of the rotation arm who definitely starts games in the Postseason. Eflin would be the de fecto No. 1 starter on the Jays this season. Let's not underestimate his contributions!
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2024 Posted August 22, 2024 It's actually unbelievable that you can have a rotation as good as Seattle's and still be as bad as they are

Last season was literally the only time in Eflin's career wherein he was even close to an "elite arm". That is in 9 total MLB seasons. To call him an "elite arm" is pure comedy. Get off Elias' nuts dude. He acquired a mid-tier arm with piss-poor durability who has a total of one noteworthy MLB seasons. Gausman: 32.4 career fWAR Eflin: 16.2 fWAR Gausman is ~3 years older. Eflin sure as s*** isn't putting up ~16 fWAR over the next three seasons. To pretend like these are comparable players is comedy.

In all honestly, don’t remember the trade, but Jays made more sense than most to chase the offensive upside. Of course, not an option with that defense. Jays know what they’re doing
