Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted February 29, 2024 Posted February 29, 2024 Manfred must be the dumbest ******* of all dumb *******s. He recognizes the problem surrounding pitching and three outcome baseball. But then does all of these annoying workarounds (shift limits, 3 batter minimum, extra inning ghost runners, now this) instead of getting to the crux of the problem. Limit the amount of pitchers a team can roster ALL YEAR. 15 is a good start, plus considerations for any prolonged IL stint. For the first 130 years of existence of this organized sport, teams got by just fine with 15 pitchers or less a year. Actively encourage teams to roster more Buehrles with 220 IP of 4 ERA and 0.7K/IP and less Snells with 130 IP of 2.50 ERA and 1.2K/IP and you will solve all these problems with three outcome baseball and 18 inning extra inning games. Yes teams have figured out third time around the batting order, pitchers give up more runs. FORCE them to make decisions that require give and take and strategy. Instead of allowing them the free reign on the easy decision to pull 3/5 of their starting staff in the fifth. "Okay, if we pull this guy in the fifth, we give up less runs. But we also tax our BP and can no longer manipulate our roster. Maybe we should leave this guy in and take our chances"
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted February 29, 2024 Posted February 29, 2024 three outcome baseball. Rule changes might a help a bit, but the real problem is just reality. The three true outcome high strikeout teams score just as many runs or more as a great batting average team, or a great basestealing + on base percentage team. Back in the day the 1988 Red Sox struck out like 700 times and hit .280, the 2023 Texas Rangers hit .260 with twice as many strike-outs but score 60 more runs. The 1985 Cardinals were the greatest basestealing team ever, led the league in on base percentage and batting average and scored like 750 runs. Somebody could try and build these kind of teams again, but they'd get out-scored by 50 to 100 runs by the .260 hitting team with 240 homers and 1500 strike-outs. So let's say you changed all the rules to make it easier to hit... I don't think it would change the strategy. You'd just end up with 300 homer teams regularly as they feast off tired starters. Offense might just go totally nuts but not in the 'Wade Boggs/Willie McGee' kind of way people want it to.

Maybe we should leave this guy in and take our chances" Since baseball has very much opened up the idea of using draft picks to incentivize behaviour... How about bonus comp picks for teams that manage to use the fewest number of pitchers, or cross certain IP thresholds for their SP? Make it so teams directly benefit from promoting pitcher health and using traditional starters. "Show me the incentive and I'll show you the outcome." - Warren Buffet

Lowering the maximum pitchers from 13 to 12 will have an impact, but if MLB really wants starters going deeper they should also reduce how many times per season a pitcher can be optioned before they hit the waiver. Apologies if someone has already suggested this and I missed it. Even with 12 pitchers, teams will be monkeying around and shuttling guys up and down to manage innings.

That was already reduced a few years ago to maximum 5 times per season.
BatFlip Verified Member Posted February 29, 2024 Posted February 29, 2024 That was already reduced a few years ago to maximum 5 times per season. Yup, I'm aware. I'm suggesting bringing that number down further for pitchers.

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted February 29, 2024 Posted February 29, 2024 Bringing up Donald Trump relative to baseball, someone should try to get him to address the Bauer situation on social media. He’d probably do it. At the least, it would get mlb’s jimmies all rustled with the national attention. They’re getting away with the collusion too easy.

Why does everything have to be about politics with you?
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted March 1, 2024 Posted March 1, 2024 Kike Hernandez was unusually candid in this interview. Pretty interesting. this reminds me a bit of the KK interview where he basically said the Jays were the only offer, at least Kike had a couple. Perfect fit though with him going back to LA
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted March 1, 2024 Posted March 1, 2024 Dumb on many levels The only Hail Mary left. He’s about to never sign again in mlb. After this year, that’s it I’d bet.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted March 1, 2024 Posted March 1, 2024 Kike Hernandez was unusually candid in this interview. Pretty interesting. I see in an article on The Athletic that Hernandez was hinting at collusion for the low offers. Does he know he put up a -1.3 WAR last season? He cleared the 1WAR mark once in the past 5 years.

The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted March 1, 2024 Posted March 1, 2024 Yeah, he seems a bit delusional about his value Seems like a lot of ball players do this. Especially a lot of the older guys. They're replacement level and want to keep playing, but they can't seem to understand why teams are going with younger guys that at least have potential for upside.

He looks like he’s about 5’7’’ 110 pounds but he must be pretty damn good for your average dude.
Laika Community Moderator Posted March 1, 2024 Posted March 1, 2024 Yeah the more concerning part was probably the velo

If it's about Kiermaier, then the only thing I've said is that after signing he said that he was surprised at the lack of interest in him throughout free agency, as he was expecting more teams to be in on him. I don't recall reading anything about how many teams were actually interested in him.

Ya that guy played D3 ball so it’s not like it was Frank the Tank walking up to the dish and getting a couple hits

Front office mindsets changed way faster than the CBA ever could. Left them behind. At least Manoah got his $3 million bonus payout or whatever it was for 2022.

I bet the guy in question had some damn good stats in D3 though. I’ve been impressed lol.
