Laika Community Moderator Posted January 10, 2024 Posted January 10, 2024 If I was going to do a top 10 SP list that did NOT just copy the top 10 projected WARs, it would probably be: Strider Wheeler Gausman Cole Burnes Nola Webb Gallen Castillo Valdez #9 and #10 are really hard. Guys like Lopez and Skubal and Glasnow pop on projections, and guys like Alcantara, Cease, Scherzer, Fried are really good and show up on the last 3 year leaderboards.

Hard to look past George Kirby also.
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 10, 2024 Posted January 10, 2024 Shoto Imanaga deal with the Cubs seems weird. Might be very light vs. expectations. "Reporting has indicated that the deal guarantees Imanaga just $30MM over two years and involves a complex series of options as well as incentives that could bring the total guarantee to around $80MM over a longer term."

Reminds me of the Maeda deal with LA where they were protected against his arm injury by a series of vesting options. Does Imanaga have a long injury track record?
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2024 Author Posted January 10, 2024 Agreed. Hard to look past George Kirby also. Justin Steele? maybe not quite enough track record to be in a top 10 convo but It would definitely not be shocking to see him near the top of any pitching leaderboard in 2024

Does Imanaga have a long injury track record? Doesn't really look like it. Just looking at GS and innings, from 2016 through 2023 he appears to have never missed significant time

Sounds like cubs got a pretty good deal. Should give them 150ip at a 3.90 era
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted January 10, 2024 Posted January 10, 2024 Stroman is a baby. He's not the kind of character you win with. Guys been through a lot and got sucked into social media a bit. Whoever gets him is probably getting 170 ip at a 3.55 era. Surprised San Fran is not going after him. Maybe he'll do a 1 year deal then reenter next year. His arm won't break.

Does Imanaga have a long injury track record? I think it's more incase he sucks. Sounds like he's a crafty lefty that might only be a #4/5. He's short for a SP too. https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/shota-imanaga-scouting-report-cubs-add-key-piece-to-rotation/
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted January 10, 2024 Posted January 10, 2024 Crafty leftys are so awesome
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted January 10, 2024 Posted January 10, 2024 (edited) Read on mlbtr that Cashman was scared off Immanaga because of his flyball rates lol Edited January 10, 2024 by Frenchsoup
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2024 Posted January 10, 2024 Read on mlbtr that Cashman was scared off Immanaga because of his flyback rates lol Seems like a real concern from everything I've read but it does seem like it's an acceptable risk for the contract terms he got.
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted January 10, 2024 Posted January 10, 2024 He'd have looked good in our rotation as our #4 and Kooch or Kluber as our 5
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2024 Posted January 10, 2024 We might see a lot of Stroman... Jan. 10: Yanks emerge as top suitor for Stroman (report) MLB Network insider Jon Paul Morosi reports that the Yankees have emerged as the "top candidate" to sign Marcus Stroman after having "productive discussions" with the right-handed pitcher in recent days.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 10, 2024 Posted January 10, 2024 We might see a lot of Stroman... And he'll be Hell bent on beating the Jays for sure
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2024 Posted January 11, 2024 We might see a lot of Stroman... I don't think anyone really fears Stroman. He's just a good reliable starter if you can put up with antics and smug attitude. And he'll be Hell bent on beating the Jays for sure The Jays already hit a metric f*** ton of ground balls. Maybe they will just BABIP him to death. He's not striking Jays out.

MikeM3 Verified Member Posted January 11, 2024 Posted January 11, 2024 Wow Suter only 1 x 3m. Would have taken him as a long man / 6th sp
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 11, 2024 Posted January 11, 2024 Wow Suter only 1 x 3m. Would have taken him as a long man / 6th sp 6th SP? I don't think he's started in any meaningful way since like, 2018. Just some 2 inning opener appearances, probably. 0.1 WAR projection. The team models obviously don't think he's much better than replacement level. Probably a push with Mitch White
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2024 Posted January 11, 2024 Yeah - we have Mitch White already for that role. Not much to suggest Suter is any better. He was lucky with his HR/FB% last year.
MikeM3 Verified Member Posted January 11, 2024 Posted January 11, 2024 Meh some teams were thinking of stretching him out apparently. Clemens had him at 2/18m and top 50 FA He's just one of those fip beaters no one believes in. He's basically top 5% every year in exit velo against

That's a great signing for the Reds and I'm surprised he couldn't do better. He needs a better agent to sell his skills.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2024 Posted January 12, 2024 Stroman to the Yankees on a two-year deal.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2024 Posted January 12, 2024 Stroman signs with the Yankees. Terms seem to be 2/37 with a 3rd year option. That’s a steal for the Yankees.

Laika Community Moderator Posted January 12, 2024 Posted January 12, 2024 Insane contract. Everybody must despise Stroman.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2024 Posted January 12, 2024 Everyone thinks he’s douchebag. Not hard to imagine
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2024 Posted January 12, 2024 Remember when it seemed like a foregone conclusion that Toronto would trade him to the Yankees and then they sent him to the… Mets. Good times
